Gretna the latest club in trouble

Who would have thought?

Gretna have assured the Scottish Premier League that they are working hard to resolve the non-payment of wages to staff, including players.

Club owner Brooks Mileson is seriously ill in a Newcastle hospital and he has been responsible for the payroll.

Watch now, they'll get relegated/punished for this, even though the person in charge of paying is seriously ill, where other clubs get away totally scot(pun intended) free for the same thing.

This shouldn't be allowed to be a business, affecting people's livelehoods etc etc! I can understand chairmen taking a punt on somewhere like Rotherham or Luton etc, as at least they have the immediate fanbase...but how can you set something like this up, in a town with a population of only 3,000!

Was his business model to build a successful team...push for the SPL...and manage to create an increase in population in Gretna to support the club entirely on the back of this?

I like Gretna, and enjoyed backing them to win 5-0 most weeks for the last few seasons...but this is ludicrous! They shouldnt have been allowed promotion on the grounds that this was always bound to happen!

They've been caught out because they've had to ground share for the their first SPL season as the Gretna ground isn't big enough.  A combination of the rent at Motherwell, long distance away and low attendances has also contributed.

But the bottom line is surely the owner would have put something away in trust in case this happened? (didn't Jack Walker do this with Blackburn?)

How to run a football club. A quick and easy guide to making a mockery of a local community co-written by Majeed/Connett/Mileson/..............

They should have stayed in the unibond. What exactly did they expect to happen?

Part of the agreement that they play in the SPL is that they build their own required capacity ground for the next season.

It is still at the planning stage.

Word is, up here, they never intended to build the new ground and/or play in the SPL.

Dunfermline will not be happy!

Surely the money they make from Rangers and Celtic must cover the wages for the whole season.

so it takes them three yers to go back to where they came from.

but the glass is always half full what a few years their supporters have had

if alty still existed at the end of it and in eight years we were back in the unibond i would be happy to have lived the dream .
the key is guaranteeing the club will still exist at the end of the dream

I can see where you're coming fom Gazelle, but unrealistic ambitions have been a death knell to many teams when externally funded.

For me consolidation, and the consequent stress free bum twitching end of season, would be just fine.

Plus, I've never done a Scottish awayday, wish they were around in the Unibond days, what a trip!

We could even have got the Birch's married off ;D

We tried to live the dream a few years ago and ended up scraping around mid table in the UniBond for 5 years with all and sundry knocking on the door for their money.  For me, building a house of cards so to enjoy a couple of years at the top would just make the (usually longer) subsequent struggles harder to bear.

Makes you think, how often have some of us wished for a chairmen who is loaded enough to be able to spend masses on players etc. Give me Geoff anyday.
