Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Transfer deadline day updates for Altrincham
« on: September 02, 2014, 08:32:34 AM »
In our last Conference spell, we improved steadily year-on-year through consolidation (a couple in, a couple out) - this largely worked until the minor exodus at the start of the relegation season.

Now you COULD say that we brought quite a few in when we got promoted, and some did a job (Joe O'Neill) but most didn't (Nehru McKenzie anyone?)

I stand by the fact that we've made some decent acquisitions this summer, ones that can keep us in this league. But momentum is a killer, and at the moment we need to stop the rot.

After half a dozen games, I don't think the post mortem starts just yet.

So what do we do then?

Do we put Leather in at RB for now (not ideal I know) because we can't expect somebody like Moult/Richman simply to slot in?

Or (as I believe) is the need to put Leather in at CB higher, therefore stick Moult/Richman at RB? You never know, sometimes you find players are a revelation in new positions (here's hoping). It sounds daft but I'd feel more confident with one of those 2 at RB than I would with Griffin at LB. Says it all really.

Armband to Cav.

Altrincham 2-1 Lincoln City

I'll add my piece and go with this team 100% as well - but with LS it's never quite as simple as we seem to see it...!

Cav is a ball-winner, not a ball-player. What he does best, he does a class above anyone else in the team. But he needs the ball-player alongside him.

I'm afraid his passing can be his main weakness and isn't ring-rust - he'll give a few cheap balls away, but for every chance he'd create for the opposition, he'd stop another half-dozen.

If his energy and ball retention has been as good as everyone has been making out in pre-season (I haven't watched him), it seems like S Williams (when available) should be alongside him.

It's amazing how perception becomes reality. Perry started 16 league games last season compared to Reeves 39 & Walshaw 35. Personally I think Perry's use is as a sub, as someone said on another thread, what he does well no one else does and there are games when he comes on, does his thing and is effective. But I'd expect Reeves & Gillespie to start more often than not. Every now and again Perry will start, we'll all wonder what the thinking behind it is, and if we lose some people will blame Perry even if he plays well

                                                          Coburn

                        Densmore       Leather         Havern          M Williams

                        Crowther        Cavanagh     S Williams       Clee

                                               Gillespie        Reeves

       Subs: Parton, Marshall/Griffin, Perry, Richman/Moult  Lawrie/Wilkinson

That's exactly the team I'd go with - apart from putting the midfield into a more obvious diamond (Liverpool-esque)

You've paired the midfield subs up well - any one of the former pair for Cav, any one of the latter pair for Williams. All can cover Clee and Crowther out wide if absolutely necessary, although this should be last resort for me.

I think Moult and Richman can thrive in a sitting role if they understand that is the role required of them, similarly Lawrie should hopefully thrive in his favoured position when he's on the pitch.

Was speaking to Peter Cavanagh on Twitter the other night, he's not fixed himself up with another gig since his release by Rochdale at the end of the season.

Asked him about going part-time and playing for Alty, seemed to welcome the idea and I think he's doing his coaching badges.

Was an absolute revelation for Dale in the holding midfielder position, there's some daft stat like he only conceded once all season with him on the pitch.

Basically, he's exactly what we need.

bump - let's hope he repays my faith

Great signing for Alty that.
Surprised he didn't get a league club, somewhere like Morecambe. You won't get many better Denise midfielders at L2 level.

A little unfortunate to have been released from here imo, certainly better than Altrincham.

whoever it was asking him on twitter if he would sign must be pleased

Guilty. I even told him to ask Craney what its like here (they're good mates)

On my head this one falls  :-\

Absolutely delighted with this signing! He really could be the difference.

Wait till the Dale lot get wind of this, you'll get a better idea.

I think we only need 2 or 3 players, other than that we a pretty much ready to go, a quality forward, a big centre midfielder and a utility player that can cover at right back, then we have cover for all 11 places.

As I've said previously, Peter Cavanagh would solve the midfield problem AND provide the right back cover. And no, I'm not his agent ;)

To be fair williams maybe the man for that role

I thought Williams was more of a ball player than a ball winner? I think the two could compliment each other well.

Plus there's no substitute for experience and leadership.

You're not his agent are you?  ;)

;)

John Coleman signed him during his spell as Rochdale manager, Cavanagh captained Accy all the way up the pyramid (and captained Dale last season). Did play as a right back, was holding midfielder all of last season

Just thought I'd make a new suggestion (that I'd suggest is more feasible than some of the other targets mentioned...)
