Just watching the "Part time & proud" video and picked up on Paul Cuddy rating the 85/86 team as the best he played in and shading it over the 81 (sic) team. From what I remember Paul came into the Alty side during the 81-82 season when the great double title winning team was on the wane so maybe his comparison is a little unfair. It got me thinking though about how the 85-86 team is regarded - of course they won the Trophy and had a memorable cup run but didn't actually win the title. Having followed the team home and away throughout both periods I don't think the later team was as good or as entertaining as the side between 79 and 81 - I may be wrong here but I don't think attendances during 85-86 were particularly great, especially bearing in mind results on the field - they certainly didn't compare to 79-81 or even 90/91 when we had a very entertaining and successful side but one that ultimately won nothing
We perhaps don't talk about Paul Reid, Peter Conning, Ronnie Ellis, Phil Gardner etc with such reverence as we recall John King, John Rogers, Jeff Johnson, Barry Howard etc so individually I think the earlier team was superior. In 1986 Doug Newton got in the team and he was crap and had a mullet to boot!
I wonder how much more highly regarded the 85/86 team would if the FA Cup win at Birmingham had been televised, rather than airbrushed out of history because it wasn't covered satisfactorily. Mind you, I think the 80-81 team would have won 3-0!
