Altrincham FC First Team / Ever the optimist...
« on: November 04, 2014, 09:03:16 AM »
As someone who was brought up on Alty almost expected to reach the 3rd round of the FA Cup each year, I still have the ingrained sense that this is our competition and, despite Saturday's result knocking us off our stride, I like to think this is going to be one of our better cup runs.

If we can make the 3rd round, I'd quite like Sunderland home or away with certain Mr Watmore given his chance by the opposition... :)

Altrincham FC First Team / Good value
« on: October 15, 2014, 07:37:32 PM »
Just been looking at the BBC's "Price of football" survey and Alty come out as decent value in the Conference.

Eastleigh's season ticket looks cheap and are Kidderminster's pies really the most expensive in the whole of senior British football at £4.50? - I hope they're good!  :D

Altrincham FC First Team / I feel old... (non-Alty)
« on: January 25, 2014, 04:56:28 PM »
I well remember watching Scarborough centre forward Jeff Barmby playing against Alty, especially in the memorable marathon FA Trophy semi final games and replays of 1977. Of course his son Nick went on to be a Premiership player and England international. Today I see Nick's son Jack scores for Hartlepool... I can only really think of the Hateley family having 3 generations playing in senior football as well though I'm sure there are others and probably an obvious one.

Altrincham FC First Team / 50 Non League Greats

Nice to see John King and John Davison included in this month's Backpass magazine - first part of their 50 Non League Greats feature, Kingy naturally being the first entry.

Some good footage here - Jeff Johnson's goal away against Orient in the FA Cup in 1980, Kingy vs Joe Neenan's knee vs SC**thorpe, interviews with Noel White & Mick Fagan

From both camps - good section inside the Faulkners and an embarrassing part where the Alty players sing at the hairdressers :)

Wish we had some footage of Ossie Smth immediately AFTER the game  ;D

Finally got around to transferring some of my VHS videos to digital and here are the TV previews and match reports from Alty's victory at Birmingham in 1986.

Features interviews with Jeff Wealands (in bed!), John King and Jeff Johnson.  A slight video glitch means that there appears to be some flatulence in evidence, most comically with Pamela Armstrong on News at Ten.

Enjoy.

Altrincham FC First Team / Today I feel really old!

Altrincham 3 Leatherhead 1 FA Trophy final 29th April 1978 at Wembley  - 35 years ago today - doesn't seem that long ago at all. Must be me age. Also worrying when retired ex Alty players look young!!!

Altrincham FC First Team / Obscure past Alty player reference
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:50:11 PM »
Reading the latest issue of Backpass magazine today there is an article on the Berwick Rangers 1 Glasgow Rangers 0 Scottish Cup upset of 1967, generally feted as the biggest cup shock in Scottish history. What I didnt know is that future Alty player Doug Coutts (72-73) was a member of that Berwick team.

Well I thought it was mildy interesting anyway :)

Apologies if this has been covered here before (couldn't find it via search) but I thought this was an interesting article and also nicely covers the airbrushing of our Birmingham win

I watched "The Story of 1978" on BBC4 last night and they inexplicably excluded the most important event of that year!!!
