Altrincham FC First Team / TT & Willo
« on: November 30, 2019, 10:18:29 PM »
Two players who, at different times, have come in for a bit of stick - both were immense today (as were everyone) and deserve the plaudits. I've always rated TT and am pleased to see him showing what a good keeper he is on his day. I hold my hands up and say I have never really been a fan of Williams since he rejoined us, didn't think he suited our style , but in recent games he has been excellent and I now get why PP rates and plays him.

I coudn't get there today because of other commitments earlier this evening so I too became a virtual resident of the US and watched on ESPN+ - excellent coverage.

PP is always one for taking the positives from any game and after the immense disappointment we all feel now, there is so much to build on going forward now. The Cheshire Senior cup game is probably the best thing to get the deflation out of our system (though I expect it will be a much changed team) and I hope we can carry the momentum of the good run into the busy month ahead.

For anyone who hasn't seen it before, here is the Liverpool vs Alty game from the FA Cup 3rd round tie in January 1981. Very early days of club produced match videos so it's fair to say it's not of Alty TV standard but what a great historical document of a fantastic day and time. Enjoy!

Altrincham FC First Team / Wingers/balance/crossing
« on: January 21, 2019, 05:07:18 PM »
Just throwing an opinion out there... while Max has done ok on the left wing since Hemmings left, and with JJ on the other side we have good balance, the best crosser of the ball into the box on recent evidence is Connor Hampson. I like JJ but actual crossing the ball into the box for Jordan or whoever to attack isn't his best attribute. Both he and Max are more likely to cut inside. I'd like to see Connor push forward more often and throw some decent high hanging crosses into the box, put their 'keeper under pressure. I'm a bit old school like that :D

Altrincham FC First Team / Bernard Taylor RIP
« on: October 01, 2018, 10:26:42 AM »
Sad to hear today of the passing of ex Alty Manager Bernard Taylor.

From John Laidlar's excellent Alty Files website...

BERNARD TAYLOR
The death has been announced of former Altrincham FC manager Bernard Taylor who passed away last Wednesday. Bernard was manager of Altrincham FC from March 1998 to May 2000. He was appointed to the role after the resignation of John King and Graham Heathcote which had taken place on 5 March 1998. At the time, Bernard was the Altrincham FC Reserves' manager.
His first managerial success came in May 1998 when Altrincham won the UniBond League Cup defeating Gainsborough Trinity at Chesterfield's Saltergate stadium.

In 1998-99 he was manager of the team which regained promotion to the Football Conference, following the club's first ever relegation in 1997. With coach Graham Heathcote alongside Bernard, Alty started the 1999-2000 season quite well. However, by the end of the campaign, although the team had only lost 14 of its 42 games, a total of 19 draws meant that Altrincham had not gathered enough points and were relegated back down to the Northern Premier League.

Bernard resigned at the end of that season and was succeeded by Mark Ward. Bernard's later roles in football included managing Kidsgrove Athletic.

Altrincham FC First Team / Grahame Rowley interview
« on: September 06, 2018, 06:26:03 PM »
Without wanting to stir up any hornets nest about the Alty chairman, there is an interesting interview with him in Cheshire Business magazine, available to read at http://www.cheshirebiz.com/images/Magazine/CheshireBusiness.pdf from page 13

John Laidler's Alty website remains as active, informative and comprehensive as ever I see - fantastic work.

Tomorrow - our first, and best, visit to Wembley to win the FA Trophy against Leatherhead. Still my favourite Alty day of all time despite so many blinders since. Can't believe its 40 years though...

Found my old copy of this game and uploaded it to YouTube.

Looking at a mid 80s VHS video is like trying to watch through fog but its nice to see. Dens' Dad at left back for Alty

While its never good to be knocked out of a competition, I suspect many of us don't envy Warrington's long trip to Ebbsfleet tomorrow :D

Not sure if this has been posted before. Dodgy video quality but Alty are on right at the start - some brutal tackling here with the Alty players coming off worse.

Altrincham FC First Team / Excellent book
« on: January 20, 2017, 01:11:07 PM »
Hi All,

I've just finished reading "The Bottom Corner: A Season with the Dreamers of Non-League Football" by Nige Tassell - I can highly recommend it to any non-league fans, especially those of clubs under-achieving! It covers last season and Alty get a few mentions but some of the scenarios are oh so familiar with Bishop Sutton sounding like us this season.  Light hearted but well written, it accurately portrays  life in the real football world. Recommended.

Altrincham FC First Team / A bit of nostalgia...
« on: June 28, 2016, 07:18:53 AM »
Hi All,

Here's an old game from 1988... FA Cup 4th qualifying replay against Macclesfield at Moss Lane. Picture quality isnt great but the result is 😆. Interesting lineups with plenty of important Alty players from the club's history on both sides, past and future at the time.

https://youtu.be/32edBVC-7-g

I'm currently trawling through my old vhs tapes from the 80s and 90s so there will be more Alty stuff to follow.
