Boston won't be next

Boston United Chairman David Newton has emerged from his talks with the Inland Revenue in no doubt the club is safe but with some hope for the future.

United's dangerous financial position has seen their future rest in the hands of the taxman, the Football League and Conference chiefs with the footballing bodies are keen to use money owed to United used to pay footballing debts, an action which would see United wound up.

Newton has been working around the clock in a bid to find a compromise that will see United's future secured but admits that although the meeting was positive, the future is still very much outside the clubs hands.

"We are not in a good position, and it is not one we can control" he said at the fans forum.

"We met with the Inland Revenue last Tuesday in Worthing and had a very good meeting.

"We put our vision for the club forward and we talked about the club and its benefits for the community.

"We were asked not to talk about football creditors as that is a hot potato, but we explained that they can't expect us to put money into this football club if at any point they or the Football League can file to wind up the club at any time."

Newton did have some positive news though with a belief that the Inland Revenue will show sympathy towards the club if the benefit of United to the local community can be seen.

"The Inland Revenue can't be seen to set a precedent" he added.

"But the tone was that if we put enough reasons forward about how the club benefits the community they will take that into account."
