Gazelle. At the time of the Southport FA Cup tie there was an ongoing argument with Pinky, his keystone cops and a group of Alty fans, some of whom were more regular at OT and Maine Road. We would go to the Moss Hotel before the match and I would be the first of us to enter the ground at exactly 2.59pm via the chequers turnstile as I wanted to see the kick-off. The other snails would enter a few minutes later and would be confronted by Pinky. His argument was that we should stop drinking before 'last orders' (2.50pm) and enter via the Golf Road End turnstiles at least 10 mins before kick-off and he would be ready to supervise any 'change of ends' for the first half. Our take on the matter was 'away fans can F.O'. So on that particular FA Cup tie we had some 'guests' from Salford (United did not have a game), whose loud view was that' the only good thing that ever came out of Merseyside was the East Lancs Road'. As we entered the chequers turnstile Pinky and his mates had allowed Southport fans in the Golf Road End and a row of cops blocked us from entering Golf Road End via the Paddock. At half time (when I think we were 3-0 down) Pinky decided that Southport fans could change ends, knowing very well they would be met with resistance. It was only Alty fans that got ejected and a couple got charged with hooliganism. Pinky followed me to live in South Africa and we discussed this incident over a pint in the Randburg Sundowner bar. His complaint was that he hated watching Alty as he thought we were rubbish, so a bit of heated action was always welcome!!!!

That incident after the Runcorn FA Trophy match would have resulted in my mate going down, as he already had a conviction for GBH before the Man U FA Cup Final with Liverpool. Pinky had gone into his cell and told him so. Fortunately for our mate (you knew him well) a couple of young Punk Rockers saw the incident on Stamford Park where the Scouse were ambushed, and witnessed the Scouse frame our mate, whose crime that day was helping a cop who was kicked in the head by Scousers.

It was great today , reminded me of years ago where games against northwich, macc, barrow, southport had some meaning, the atmosphere at Moss Lane changes but when we mix it with them we spere the team on and fortress moss lane bounces! We haave some great banter merchants and song writers, and sometimes it gets up front and personal but rarely real trouble, most  usually go away away buzzing and 3 points are in the bag! Lovely old shcool fixture with a bit of bite thats all!

Going back decades our main local rivals were Vics and Macc. Wigan were good for a punch-up and it was a different gang they brought down every season. Although I agree that spitting is a disgusting habit, it was just one of the insults we used to have to put up with when visiting the Scousers - in the form of Runcorn or Scouseport. We had 2 big issues at home in the late 70's with this lot. Firstly was an FA Cup tie at Moss Lane with Scouseport when our local police put them in the Golf Road End for the first half while we were still in the pub and then complained when they were chased around the ground at half time. Another was the 1st leg of the FA Trophy SF at Moss Lane when they tried to frame a mate of mine who went to help an injured cop suffering with concussion. The return leg was even less pleasant. And before anyone says that this is history - a leopard don't change it's spots. As for boundaries, both Scouseport and Runcorn are Merseydive overspills. By the same token I think you will find unlike Sybil, a healthy number of Alty residents are Mancs or like myself and others on this forum have immigrant parents - plus most babies of Alty residents are actually born in Manchester these days so they are Manc!!!!.

Since when have Southport been Scousers?
Since the 1976 Local Government Act lumped them into Merseyside. However, any decent Sandgrounder will tell you that, just as we are in Cheshire, THEY belong to Lancashire. They do, after all, have a Preston postcode.
Southport aren't Scousers - I was born in Altrincham and most certainly not a Manc
With that logic, we have the postcode of a town that was then in Lancashire and now in Cheshire. So whichever way you want to twist it we are not in the same county as Warrington - which is half way to Merseydive ;D

I'd happily see more north west clubs including Southport in this division. Better crowds and less travelling.

So you want more clubs in the same market for players as ourselves ???

More local clubs does not usually mean better crowds as the likes of Bristol Rovers and Oxford U brought bigger crowds than Hyde and Scouseport.
And why the sudden love of Scousers? It was that lot that collaborated to get us 18 points deducted over the James Robinson saga.

This is a very old problem.
We get treated like sh*t at away grounds, and in return away supporters are treated like VIP's at Moss Lane by our stewards and police, at the same time this is detrimental and inconvenient to our own fans.
Why cant the Scouse get wet?
Sadly it is looking like they may be back next season - if they dont go bust!

On this basis, we should also raise the prices in the away end snack bar.

Yip that is exactly what we should do. We should charge away fans what they charge us. eg Bristol Rovers £30 for 1 Adult and 1 Child.
AND STICK EM IN THE OPEN AWAY END.

Torquay's recent forward is awfull the fact they lost a 2 goal lead makes things worse

I hope it stays that way after Easter as I have delayed our short Easter break to take in the match.

I sit in the family stand as my dad is unable to stand for long periods of time and is unable to make it up the steps in the main stand. It's bad enough that random away fans end up there (despite not paying for sitting and just walking through from the away end). Quite often we can be surrounded by away fans who don't appreciate that it's a family stand and start effing and jeffin and picking arguments with the Alty fans.

I see it's people who don't sit in the family stand who are quite happy for it to be handed over to away supporters, without thinking about the Alty fans that sit there.

When I go to Moss Lane I have my kids with me and I do sit in the family stand. My suggestion of segregating part of the family stand for away fans was to accommodate those away fans that need to sit, like you would at away grounds. Also my suggestion keeps them away from the main stand, segregation means they wont annoy you and keep them out of the bar. My first choice would be to keep the chequers end as it is and put away fans only in that section. The idea of putting a roof over the chequers end in not a good one as it would an adverse effect on the pitch, especially after frost and severe rain, as it stops the air circulation and drying process.

Make the family stand an away stand if possible to segregate somehow ?

I've often thought this, put the families on the first rows of the main stand nearest the away dugouts, problem solved, there's minimal bad language in the main stand.that way the away sides have 100+ seats

They won't want to move the sponsers. They could easy use the away turnstiles to access seats in family stand they would just have to find a way to put
a secure segregation in.

How about fencing off next to the front door of the sponsors lounge, giving the away supporters seats nearest the away end, charging them extra for sitting once inside the ground. The other seats could be used for the sponsors and families could be put in the front rows of the main stand as already suggested.
Having said this, why have we got to be so accommodating to away fans,  particularly those from clubs who treat us badly?

Also going but cannot leave till 5.30pm so am hoping we can drive 75 miles before kick-off  ???

I was hoping to get there early as Dover have quite nice, friendly fans. I bumped into about 20 of them on Redhill station while going to Bath and they were going to Woking.
More important, lets get a win as apart from last Saturday, Dover have not been doing well recently.

The answer is to make all away fans enter through the away turnstiles, the charge them a lot extra if they want to sit. This happens at many away games we go to.

I think we are forgetting that we have been very fortunate this season with the low number of injuries that we have had. A couple more out each game or one or two long term injuries, we would not be in the league position that we currently in.

Maybe the questions are as simple as the referendum - Are you Scottish or are you English?  ;)

A win on Sunday should make us safe and not to have to worry too much about the likes of Scousport, Aldershot, Alfreton ect hitting a purple patch. I would have preferred Welling to have kept their manager until after Sunday then fire him for losing to us.
