1951-2 Team (See Official Site)
Moss Lane was a bit la-di-dah Gunner Graham in '52 - a trainer called Masseur and 2 Polish players? Still, I bet Biffer Smith took no prisoners.
Was Biffer harder than these:-
1. John King - Ossie's Nightmare
2. Gerry Casey - slow, average in the air but seemed to know most NPL refs by their first name
3. Stan Allan - used to pick fights with the oppositions' best players and get them sent off
4. Graham Heathcote - similar to Stan apart from the getting their players sent off bit
5. Lennie Dickinson - chinned a Macc player at Edgeley park in a CSC semi
-
I'd give Andy Green a game there.
-
Eddie Bishop. Good player but permanently on the verge of committing GBH.
-
Bobby Fraser anyone?
-
Can't really comment on years gone by so i'd say Andy Green, such a good goalscorer but a hothead, seem to recall him smashing a changing room door in at Dover or Dagenham after being sent off.
Ricky Harris was a big lad as well.
-
Carl Furlong was a total nutcase!
-
O yeh, he was quite scary in the fact he looked like he should br sectioned ;D
-
Kevin Hulme
"He's big, He's hard, he'll eat your yellow card, Kevin Hulme."
-
Quite telling the mad dog isn't suggested.....proves my theory that he is a big softy really...he's just a puppy in wolves clothing.
From what i remember I'd have kingy and casey top in terms of hard tackling deliberate fouls, jabs uppercuts etc.
For nutter value I'd go carl furlong.
-
Ken "bite your ears" McKenna could dish it out.
-
How about this line-up for a collection of, ahem, 'competitive' players?
Admittedly, they would collect a few yellow and red cards along the way.....but you wouldn't fancy playing aganst this team on a cold and wet evening in February......
1. John Wood
Lunatic goalkeeper brought to Moss Lane from Rossendale United by Les Rigby.
I recall that he was far better at punching opposition players than the ball.
A few years after leaving Alty, didn't he get sent off whilst playing against us in a friendly for throwing a punch at John Rogers?
2. Stan Allan
Eamonn O'Keefe's best mate.
3. Barry Knowles
Psychotic former Wigan Athletic left full-back who was at Alty in the late 1980s.
4. Bobby Fraser
As (justly) proposed by Alty Tunnel Steward.
Even though he was aged about 60 by the time John Williams signed him for Alty, he was still a fearsome, gnarled character.
5. Gerry Casey
Identified by no less an authority than John King himself as the hardest player he ever came up against.
Enough said.
6. John King
Simply, a Non League legend.
Somebody really should write a book about his exploits.
Mind you, he could play a bit, too!
7. Eddie Bishop
Fearless and terrifying at times.
8. Paul Ellender
Sheer physical presence and strength.
Inspirational.
9. Andy Green
Plenty of ability but mad as a goose on stilts.
Permanently only seconds away from a red card.
10. Ken McKenna
Not to be messed with.
Quality striker.
11. Joe Flaherty
The legendary hothead himself!
Best remembered for (i) scoring but subsequently being sent off at Moss Lane in the FA Trophy semi-final second leg against Scarborough in April 1977; (ii) getting himself booked only 20 seconds after coming on as a substitute in the 1978 FA Trophy Final at Wembley against Leatherhead.
Subs. Jeff Johnson; Danny Adams; Graham Barrow; Lennie Dickinson; Mick Carmody.
-
1.Hugh C
2. Kenny P
3. Robert
4. Dennis
5. Skipper
-
Watching the 1986 trophy final dvd Bobby Fraser dishes out some treatment that wouldn't be allowed in todays game.
That said an honourable mention here for Eddie Hussin and Val Owen (with support from messrs Maddox, Talbot and Adams) for their absolute hatchet job on Yemi Odubade in the play off final.
-
First keeper I remember is Willie Mailey, not the tallest but he had a right temper on him!
I think he left and went to Macc, I recall a serious exchange of views on the pitch between him and a few blokes after one game.
-
Cult of, that is quality!
Andy Green descrisption is perfect!
I remember he came on as a sub once when we were 3-0 up and got a straight red for elbowing a defender in the face. He'd just come back from a 3 game ban too. LEGEND!

No.1 - and by miles "six foot 2 eyes are blue GERRY CASEY's after you. Tony Saunder's wrote an article in a National Sunday paper before the Tottenham game saying Gerry was the hardenst nut he ever met in Football. There was a standing joke that an Everton player made a prematch treat to Gerry that he would break his leg. Gerry's reaction was "son, I'm 36 and have seen blokes that would eat you for dinner, but if you want to mix it, you dont have to come looking for me". Sure he wasnt the quickest defender, but he was a very good Centre Half, and not much went past him. Challenged for everything - a great competitor. Compared to Gerry, Liverpool's legendry Toomy Smith was a fairy.
2. Joe Pritchard - Gerry Casey's partner on the pitch and on building sites. A lot quieter verbally than Gerry, but a real tuogh nut - also our leading scorer one season.
3. Johnny King - hard and loved to mix it. However, got as much as he gave, probably because he wound up opponents even before the match started.
4. Les Campbell - the hardman of the Jackie Swindells era. Was there also another player of that era that had a reputation and got lengthy suspensions, or was it just Les ?
5. Lennie Dickenson - I also remember that incident again Macc at Stockport which as good as cost us the match. If I am correct it was on Ian Morris who Alty later signed from Macc ?

Joe Pritchard was one of my early Alty heroes.
Alty really should have won the Northern Premier League in the 1973/74 season but a fixture backlog took its toll and the opportunity passed us by.
Joe was Alty's top scorer that season with 25 goals - not bad for a midfield player!
A great striker of the ball.
Alas, I believe that he suffered an injury at work the following season and he never really recovered.

As a "younger supporter" my hardmen would have to be from those I have seen.
1) Ken McKenna....totaly fearless
2) Andy Green...a frightening man
3) Mick Carmody - would just run through walls
4) Paul Ellender...was just a mountain
5) Barry Knowles - small but a real fighter
My best Andy Green memory (apart from him getting sent off just after coming on as he was cross about him being sub) involves chips.
He scores at the Golf Rd end. I was eating some chips down at the front to stop Pete Hughes taking a handful. He did not celebrate just walked up to me a took a chip and ate it. You just don't get that in the Premier League.

Tony Kelly would have eaten the whole lot....

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Derek 'Tank' Halliwell.
I remember in an away match in the Cheshire League at Rhyl (I think it was before substitutes) he threw himself for a diving header and split his head open on the goal post leaving the field very groggy. Went across the road to the hospital, got stitched up and came back on in the second half with a big bandage round his head!

kingy bar none has anyone got the picture from sheff utd with kingy doing a terry butcher i'd love it framed on my wall

An brilliant article from four four two (don't know when) by Andy Mitten (a really good writer). Encapsulates everything talked about in this thread. n.b. I was searching for the photo of Kingy which I have seen on the official site.

Keith Russell could look after himself.
Chinned a defender at the golf rd end after he took exception to a challenge Keith put in on the keeper.
Also dished it out at Boston after the linesman failed to spot a blatant off the ball stamp on him. A chair got it as well if I remember correctly!?
-
It does say Alty hardnuts.
So I am going to vote for Market Dave ::)

Ballers,
This article appeared in the November 2004 issue of Four Four Two.

There are one or two in my time but Eddie Bishop was a pretty scray character !
-
Mark Sertori struck me as someone I wouldn't want to meet down a dark alley at nigh!
-
Phil (The suntan) Power didn,t he get set off a few times playing for Alty?
-
Joe Paladino was a hard bloke, did'nt he chin someone once at the end of a match
-

That was a Chester fan. If you watch the video of the game during the pitch invasion at the end you can see him lying on the floor.
-
Phil Power and Keith Russell were NOT hard. At all, the afct that they managed to pick up a red card or two doesn't make them hard men.
I still laugh at how Russell threw his career away.
-
Am I the only one who miss read this and thought it said top 5 alty hair cuts?
