Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Any chance the Maidenhead match will be on?
« on: December 12, 2022, 01:46:37 PM »
Cover or not, I think it unlikely that we'll manage to get the game on tomorrow.  Both teams have played 23 games, which is more than most and may sway opinion against risking it.

Overall, the best performance I've seen from us this season.  Solid performances across the park meant that, for once, Colclough didn't not look a completely different class to the rest (this is meant as a positive btw).  I can see Toby taking on the responsibility of captain sooner of later; particularly so as Hulme has found this season difficult and his deficiencies highlighted by the arrival of Newby, who must be pursued as a permanent signing. A very enjoyable watch (strange why the atmosphere was so subdued) and far more positive looking forward to the rest of the season.

I felt quite positive at the way we started the match, as from what I saw standing at the Chequer's, we appeared to offer a bit of creativity and movement off the ball, that could have led to a goal.  Newby looked bright, Jennings less so.  Both will need to bed in, as will the players returning from injury, and its harsh levelling criticism at them for last night.  The performance in the SH declined however, and I think that as has already been stated, once the oppo seem work out our style of play, we're effectively out of the game.  Play in the second 90 became increasingly sloppy; we seemed intent on rushing to pass even when not under any pressure.  Worryingly, we declined further with the substitutions.  I'm not an apologist, but the chorus of boos that rang out at the end was helpful to no one.

I will regard success this season as nothing more than managing to stay out of a relegation battle in the final round of games.

Seemed very happy with his chant.  Good call that one.

Class goal.  Wouldn't have been surprised if they keeper had applauded; he knew Bennett's strike was unstoppable.  Despite what the scoreline suggests, I thought their 'keeper did a decent job for Dorking.

Difficult to fathom some of the less-than-impressed comments that appeared on here (and on the fans' FB site) after yesterday's win.  Two poorly performing clubs desperately in need of a win to boost their league position (and their confidence) was always likely to result in a cagey and error-strewn encounter.  And that, indeed, was how the first half played out.  However, to suggest that this continued for the full 90 is simply not true.  What we saw in the S/H was a gritty determination and a team who had realised that they needed to get more than just a draw from the game; play was far more direct and the players appeared willing to get stuck in and to take responsibility.  On the sending off, I'm not convinced that the perceived advantage of playing against 10 men is as significant as is always stated, and so I'm not going to use it as a reason to take anything away from Alty.  More important to mention is their keeper who did a fine job of keeping them in the game.  It's not rose-tinted to say that on another day we could have had at least two more.  Colclough and CCC were both major contributors yesterday and I'm going to buck the trend of slating Jackson and say that I thought he did his job as well as anybody and posed questions with his crossing the ball.  Finally, I'd be happy to see Mullarky take on the responsibility of Captain; I think he is closer to the mould of Moult in terms of leadership, and Hulme is out of the game or injured far too much.
Moving forward, I think we should expect to get nothing at Notts next week, but better opportunities exist in the games that follow.  Looking at the league as it stands currently, I can see little to separate the teams in the bottom third (or even, half)  so let's hope we can string a couple of wins together and ease the pressure.

A welcome surprise and a reminder, if any were needed, that the Board are not only custodians of the Club, they are also, importantly, fans.

What the hell is Parky telling them at half time?! This second half mental block is going to relegate us.

We let a poor SC**thorpe side come on to us for far too long... and paid the ultimate price.

If Marcus Dinanga is the answer then we might as well give up now - he was utterly dreadful.

Plus sides: keeper looks solid and good with the ball at his feet, Toby is by far our best defender. Eddy Jones seems to be settling back in reasonably well. Not a fan of James Jones at all, he's really poor technically.

Egli Kaja was the difference between a poor result and utter disaster. He needs to be starting now.

Agree 100% about Kaja, he was quality and immediately put the wind up SC**thorpe.  Think criticism of Dinanga is a tad unfair; as a lone striker both he and Hulme are finding they are isolated and largely ineffective.  Kaja could, I think, bridge the gap, the alternative is to trial playing both Hulme and Dinanga and hope we score more than the oppo.

Altrincham FC First Team / Kaja starts
« on: September 13, 2022, 11:40:38 PM »
First name on the team sheet.  I don't care whether he can last a full 90 or not, he has the ability to make things happen when he's on the pitch and, frankly, the rest of them are blowing hot and (mostly) cold at the moment.  He was the only reason we came away with something this eve. and within 5 minutes of him arriving SC**thorpe had put two players on him to try to quieten him.  We need goals scoring and it's clear that our lone striker approach, whether it's Hulme or Dinanga, is simply not working because there is no support.  Kaja looks the most likely to bridge that gap.

Not a player I'm aware of, but he's young and now has the opportunity to make his mark.  Let's hope we can give him enough chances to show us what he is capable of.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Chesterfield match thread
« on: August 30, 2022, 12:06:48 PM »
I've read some interesting posts following yesterday's game, some of which I think are unfair.  Firstly, Mee should be held responsible for either of yesterday's goals; the first came after Baines lost his man, the second was a deflection (almost certainly from a hand).  Secondly, I thought that we showed much more grit than I've seen for a long time.  Gone were the lengthy periods of lateral passing, and instead we saw the team prepared to have a go and push forward for sustained periods (although the question of where we our goals will come from is still an issue).  Looking at the table, Chesterfield are top, and taken in isolation I think that yesterday's performance was decent; the problem is that it comes after a run of draws and losses.

I'm far from panicking yet, but I think that we may need to accept that this season is going to see us hovering about the relegation places while we bed in as. FT club.

Frustrating afternoon, given that we should have had all 3 points.  It's fair too say that Maidstone made us look rank average for the first half hour, but I was impressed with what I saw when we stepped up and I've no doubt that the oppo will be thanking their lucky stars that they left ML with a point.  Why, having got he equaliser and threatened to put them to the sword, we then stepped off the gas when the game isn't won, I'll never know, but that seems to be the Alty way

Thought the new boys equipped themselves well, although C-C held onto the ball a tad too long once or twice when a deft offload would have been the right move to make.  Gould did well; his finger-tip save was outstanding and stopped us from going 2-down, and his distribution was generally good (and better the TT's).

Disappointingly, the refereeing was woeful from start to finish and may well have cost us the game (I'll be interested to see the penalty appeal and Dining's goal that was judged offside to see whether they were the correct decisions).

I'd gone hoping for a win but expecting us to lose (given the weight of expectation) so a draw is OK, I suppose.

Ultimately, I'm just disappointed that the club appear to have shafted a business that flies the flag for us so well. I do hope the bridge hasn't been burned entirely.

As for the the fan zone, in whatever form it does finally take, it was created to drive footfall to the ground earlier, and generate more revenue from food and drink. I do not think it will achieve that aim if it is 'standard' bottled and canned options akin to the CSH. The fans who were interested in this project will likely to continue to drink in the town centre pre-game, probably at the bar that we could have had at the ground.

Very strongly agree with this sentiment.  I thought the Libero link-up was a big plus for the Club: good beer, local ind. company, likely to bring fans in earlier etc.  As a general point, I think the Club needs to exercise care moving forward into the professional era, and they will need to tread carefully the fine line that separates the core fan base from the (new) corporate backers who may stipulate unpopular demands in return for their sponsorship.  An interesting, local comparison might be to Sale FC who rebranded themselves as Sale Sharks in the run up to rugby going professional.  There, the board marketed the Club aggressively to attract a larger crowd that they hoped would ensure their survival.  While they have been successful in making the transition (propped up by RFU money?) I think the fan base has altered dramatically and would be unrecognisable from their time at Heywood Road.  As we move into this new pro-era, we must be prepared to embrace change, but not forget our roots, what it is we stand for, and the reason why we chose to support Alty in the first place.

Think Sale’s fan base altered dramatically due to the move from Heywood Road to the AJ Bell stadium in Salford. The difference in getting there from the wealthier Cheshire environs of Wilmslow, Alderney Edge, Altrincham was dramatically altered. Edgeley Park suited it very well but the AJ Bell May as wel be on the moon it’s that difficult to access.

So not really a true comparison although I know what you’re getting at.

I agree with you about the AJB, but I think EP had limited appeal to core fans too.  The move from Heywood Road was made necessary to meet the demands of Premiership Rugby who stipulated ground size etc.  If Alty meet the ambition expressed by the Board we will likely have to deal with a similar conundrum.  TBH, I think this is a long way in the future, if at all, and what I was alluding to in my OP was the need to satisfy sponsors and attract larger footfall, without alienating the hardcore fans.

Presumably 'both' refers to Alty's and Wrexham's boss.  If so, I'd hazard that they Wrexham have more to fear (although I doubt he'll be tempted.  And while I rate PP, I think there are other candidates more likely to fit the criteria Notts will have.  If he were to succumb to a lucrative offer (and I think given the chance, he'd be foolish not to) it would leave us in a very precarious position having just made the step up to F/T.

The interest in our talent being taken by some of the bigger clubs is not surprising given our relative success, but it's hard to take.
