Modesty prevents Mr Cult including his own superb "When we were kings" series which really should be published and on sale at the club - essential reading about the 1979-80 season when we won the first Alliance Premier League (now National League) title.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if we place him on the transfer list it's essentially an invitation that anyone can take him for nothing? That's how other retained lists seem to work...

Said it for years but an evening with Rob and Phil discussing BTS of footballing world would be a great event (providing its common knowledge in industry).

I wasn't aware that Rob Esteva and Phil Parkinson were experts on South Korean boy bands.

Should we be worried you know the name of a South Korean boy band? :D

You mean to tell me that The Retrobeats don't cover any of their songs, complete with the accompanying dance routines..?

 ;D ;D ;D

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: current rivals
« on: May 13, 2022, 01:36:04 PM »
I grew up with Northwich being our main and absolutely hated rivals (Jeff Forshaw anyone?) - we could never beat them. Runcorn and Mossley were the other main local rivals, Macc were having a bad time of it late 70s to mid 80s so they weren't really a threat though it was a different story before I started watching. A lot of players moved between the teams. Doesn't feel like we have a real local rival now since the NPL season brought us games against Warrington and Witton.

I see potential in Hall - personally thought his hold up play was quite good on Monday and he setup Dan Mooney's goal by doing just that. I can see he's trying to move up a level so we shouldn't pass judgement too quickly.

Thanks Gary once again.

I've had a look through other clubs' forums over the years and the Alty service is one of the best from a user perspective.

Cheers,
Paul

Altrincham FC First Team / Loans & next season
« on: March 23, 2022, 01:31:32 PM »
Am I right in thinking that only Harry Perritt of last night's starting line-up is a loanee? If so, we can see the evolution of the squad taking place as we slowly move away from the old guard (Moult, Hannigan for example) with newer players like Marriot & Osbourne really establishing themselves. Its natural that some our old favourites will play less of a part as we move towards a hybrid/full time club model, not that I am writing any of the longer servers off just yet! Last night's performance showed we can match most of the best in the division when we're on form and we have the basis of a decent squad ahead of next season. Kyle Ferguson looks a great addition.

The short termism of some posters on here is nuts. It’s not about which manager might get us a few more points in the next ten games. It’s about a manager who buys into what the club is doing and where it’s going. The club is on an upward trajectory and a run of 20 poor results with a few shockingly bad performances doesn’t change that. There have been a whole heap of extenuating  circumstances. What we learn now is how good is Parky at turning round a disheartened dressing room?  So far not great  it he did it when he first arrived, albeit by clearing the decks and starting again so may not be so easy this summer depending on who is on long term deals.

For my money keep Parky is still in the no brainer category. You don’t make 5 year decisions of the back of two months experience and ignore the other three years!

In the short term just tell them to put there foot through it when it’s in our area. All 4 first half goals yesterday followed us having possession in our own box and making poor decisions on what to do with it. Don’t piss about back there clear the thing properly.

Its fair to say this situation has elicited a wide range of opinions, which I respect, but this post sums up my own feelings perfectly.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Tony Webber R.I.P.
« on: January 04, 2022, 12:18:39 PM »
Tony Webber was a decent player but also an inconsistent one, in away match programmes he was always described as being good "on his day". He was a fast, bustling sort of player in the style of Andy Green (90s) maybe. He got an injury just as we started out on our run to the 76-77 FA Trophy semi finals and Mickey Moore's return to the side kept him out. Moore was suspended/injured for the 2nd replay and Webber played but didn't have his best game. He was still with us at the start of the following season but the purchase of John Rogers meant he was always going to be a squad player and I think he left pretty soon after Rogers' arrival. The photo on the front of the 77-78 season programme was indeed Webber in a pre-season game against Halifax, may have been his last appearance for the Robins.

Paul

As I recall, he joined Alty from Morecambe in late November/early December 1976 at the same time that we signed Jeff Johnson from Hyde United.

The rumoured respective transfer fees back then were £1,500 for Webber and £500 for Johnson.

If I'm not mistaken, both players scored on their debut in a 4-1 defeat of Gainsborough Trinity in an NPL fixture at Moss Lane on Saturday, 4th December 1976.

I can't really pinpoint quite why such a player of Webber's proven pedigree didn't proceed to have a successful career with the Robins. Was he plagued by injuries? Can anyone out there enlighten me?!

The statistics in my possession record his Alty career (1976/77 & 1977/78 seasons) as comprising a total of 30 (+4 as sub) appearances in all competitions, during which he scored a tally of five goals.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I didn't make it to Tow Law Town, but I certainly recall the York game.  I only had a t-shirt on (above the waist that day) and was subjected to a lengthy conversation with Yorkshire constabulary about whether i was under the influence of drugs (I wasn't) or alcohol (possibly).

I didn't find Ryhope that cold, but I am surprised no-one has mentioned our first visit to Cammell Laird which was a bit chilly

Always suspected you were raised by polar bears Bill  ;D

A Cheshire Senior Cup tie in (I think) 1991/92 away at General Chemicals. Only Alty game I've left early because of weather conditions, my feet were so cold and painful I just couldn't stand any longer. Regarding the York game, I remember the heating on the coach going there didn't work and the driver got lost!

I'd agree with the exception of Harrison who I believe struggled following the knee injury he sustained while with us.

Yes he did - such a shame, I really rated him
