Altrincham FC First Team / Re: This week's NLP
« on: February 28, 2022, 06:01:34 PM »
Just flicking through the latest edition of the NLP. On page 40, there's a picture of two Liversedge players celebrating a goal. The goalscorer is named as Lewis whitham but he's the absolute doppelganger of damien reeves (the ears gave him away).
Am I mistaken or is it just a mistake by the NLP?
I didn't even know he played for Liversedge - last I heard he was playing for Maltby Main.
Definitely Lewis Whitham who scored, although there is a distinct resemblance, I grant you.  The picture on the attachment is of Whitham getting his Liversedge player of the month award on Saturday.

Damian Reeves came on as sub for Maltby Main on Saturday.

Wasn't McMahon the bloke who was appointed M*cc manager when they had no players just before they went pop?

Not quite.  I was interested and had to check on this, but he was manager from August 2019 to January 2020, when he left to join D&R, but Macc still appointed another manager, Mark Kennedy, before they finally went bust some months later, and suddenly found hordes of new fans when the reformed club started at a lower level.

Agree with what most people have said. I wasn't very confident when I saw the lineup, but, after a slow start, we scored with what may have been our first  proper shot on goal, and then went on to dominate the game.

Isaac Marriott is the sort of player who professionals sometimes say is not appreciated by mere supporters, but, as other posters have proved, this is wrong, and he was my  MOTM too.

, Good luck at Curzon to Tom, and thanks for the goals and his effort. I am sure he will do well there, especially against York.

I am a bit surprised to see him go after returning from his loan at Curzon, especially as we now seem to be lacking in numbers up front.

I thought we finished very strongly after an absolutely terrible start. It did look at the start as if the defence had never played together, but, well, they hadn't. It was very unfortunate, and  a mistake by the referee, to blow so early rather than to allow an advantage before the penalty; there clearly was a possible advantage  as the ball went in the back of the net, although he had equally clearly stopped play before then.

I did like Chris Conn-Clark of the newcomers, and must be a glass half full person as it does feel like this could be the point which will keep us up. Not so much for the point in itself, but for the confidence induced and the proof that we can come back to get something from a game.

Altrincham FC First Team / Steve Finney - RIP
« on: February 05, 2022, 12:15:34 PM »
I have seen the sad news that former player Steve Finney has died, aged just 48.

He joined  us, initially on loan, from Chester City, in December 2000 and was a pretty regular goalscorer for the remainder of that season. He briefly returned, later in 2001 when he scored 2 goals in an 8-1 Cheshire Senior Cup win at Woodley Sports. RIP.

« on: January 30, 2022, 10:42:56 PM »
I would say we "should" be okay rather than we "will" be okay due to Weymouth and King's Lynn's failings.  We could obviously do with a win, but, as has been said, it's all too plausible that we could draw with with the relegation rivals and still stay up.

Also, t wasn't too long ago that the worry was of Phil Parkinson being poached by a bigger or richer club. I think, in fact I am sure, he's got enough footballing credit in the bank to remain in charge - I always thought motivation was one of his greatest skills, but he really needs to apply this now to a team and supporters low n confidence.

If you are carrying his bags, don't go to New York as the Jordan game on Friday is actually at the New York University Stadium in Abu Dhabi! The Uzbekistan game on Tuesday is then in Dubai. Good luck to Matty Gould in his adventure.

I can't think of a player having a full international callup while at the club. Lee Ramoon seems a strong possibility, but I can't recall him playing for the Cayman Islands while he was on our books, although he was loaned out most of the time.

Ramoon actually scored for us didn't he? Presumably that would be the only time a full international has scored for us?

He did, but so did Marc Joseph.

I had second thoughts thankfully. Could have been an expensive mistake! 😱

Phew! Good to hear.

Meanwhile, I am sure Andrew is right that  Marc Joseph did play for Antigua and Barbuda while he was with us. I did have a nagging feeling that somebody had played for a Caribbean nation but had forgotten about him.

If he had stayed on our books for longer than a fortnight,  Danny Higginbotham would have played for Gibraltar while an Altrincham player, I am sure.

Non Altrincham FC Talk / Re: Blackburn match delayed by fan collapse now.
« on: January 25, 2022, 10:08:42 PM »
Anecdotally, I can  immediately think of a Worcester City steward who sadly died after a collapse during our final visit to St George's Lane, when he was taken  to hospital in an ambulance originally ordered for Stephen Rose.
Although I wasn't present, I can also remember a Chorlton Town reserve player dying following a game against our reserve team in 1988 or so.

Supporters and even players have collapsed at football matches and other sports for years. I have not seen figures either, but, I suspect that games are more likely to be stopped if a supporter has a tragic incident nowadays - that won't apply to players, but there have been occasional incidents like this for years.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Just to change the subject a bit...
« on: January 24, 2022, 11:12:12 PM »
Having had a scan through a very long thread on the Chesterfield forum, nobody really knows what the suspension is for, although there are lots of theories. Many people aren't very surprised either.

Having heard  the odd interview, he does come across as very arrogant. That might have nothing to do with these allegations, but I think he won't have made many friends in the club who will rush to defend him, or even keep something quiet on his behalf.

Welcome to the club. Elliot Osborne does look like a really decent signing.

I am finding it difficult to keep track of all the signings and really have no idea of how the new and existing signings will fit together! I assume a striker will be coming tomorrow.

Happy New Year to everyone.
The fact I am posting  at this time from home may indicate we are not quite back to normal yet, but let's hope for a better year than last, although there are excellent foundations being laid off the pitch.

« on: December 30, 2021, 09:31:07 PM »
That's very fair comment.
Rules which cannot realistically be enforced or which are routinely broken by members of the government or their scientific advisers lose their credibility.

As an example, I did read something about a rugby union game in Wales which had 50 watching from the touchline, although I am not sure how that would be enforced at a lower level, but there were 140 or so present in the clubhouse. In contrast, the FAW have suspended all domestic football (some smaller clubs did want to continue), in the hope football will resume shortly; Welsh football deliberately began early to cater for any suspension for covid, so this may not ruin the season.
