We need to get good results against the likes of the Sandgrounders in order to establish ourselves back in the top non league.

If we play like we did last Saturday, all I can see is an Alty victory.

3-1 Alty. Gillespie. Leather & Crowther. Att 1088   97 from Alty

Sadly I will be down South so will miss standing in that drafty away end at Haig Avenue .

Gonna go for 0-2. I'd take three points from next two games, Gateshead will be very difficult.
Southport will struggle this year. Although I said that about Ferriby last year.

I didn't rate Southport when we beat them in a friendly last season.  Not sure if they had a strong team out or not, but we played kids at some point.

0-5, Kyle Perry hat trick, Reeves and Crowther.

It's not going to be easy as they have had a tough start and it's not a happy hunting ground for us.  They have us and Telford this weekend and will see our game as the one to start the season.  Mind you so did Bristol Rovers..

I think it will be 1-1 but we will deserve more and play pretty well.

Since the 4-1 in around 1994 has there been a good southport-alty game?
I recall several real shockers in that time.

The best Alty v Southport matches have occurred at Moss Lane:

(i) Saturday, 25th November 1978
FA Cup First Round

Altrincham...4  Southport...3

(Jeff Johnson wins the game in injury time);

(ii) Saturday, 12th November 1994
FA Cup First Round

Altrincham...3  Southport...2

(a dramatic late winner from Paul France).

On both occasions, we went on to play Spurs in the Third Round.

I remember us winning there in about 1996, I think it was Danny McGoona's debut. I think it was 3-1 or 3-2 and Chris Sharratt was playing for them.

That was the last time that we won at Haig Avenue.

Saturday, 14th December 1996
GM Vauxhall Conference

Southport...1  Altrincham...3

Alty goalscorers: Neil Doherty; Niell Hardy and Paul Cain.

And, yes, it was the debut of the erratic Danny McGoona.

It's about time we won there again. I can feel a 2-1 to the mighty Supers coming up! Four points over the Holiday weekend would be a fabulous return.

I knew our record there wasn't great but surprised that we've only won there 3 times ever!

And I've seen all 3, the aforementioned 4-1 and 3-1 victories and for those that remember it a smash and grab 2-1 win in midweek. Think a lad called Andy Allan equalised in injury time (or an own goal) before Mick Carmody belted a 30 yarder into the top corner (he didn't score many). An absolute mentaler!!
