Those seven missed penalties this season......
« on: March 24, 2013, 06:41:42 PM »

......haven't proved to be quite as expensive as you might at first have thought.

In response to a query addressed to me at Moss Lane yesterday by Ashley Cricket Club legend, Brian Birtles, here are the details:

(1) Damian Reeves v Gainsborough Trinity (A) BSB North

Goalkeeper saves and Reeves nets the rebound.

Won: 4-2.

(2) Damian Reeves v Shildon (A) FA Cup

Damian's spot kick disappears into orbit somewhere over Eric's Chippy.....but we were 3-0 up at the time, anyhow.

Won: 3-0.

(3) Damian Reeves v Corby Town (A) BSB North

Goalkeeper saves Damian's seventh minute effort with the score standing at 0-0.

Won: 5-2.

(4) Damian Reeves v Burton Albion (A) FA Cup

Damian's fifth minute penalty kick is well saved by the goalkeeper with the score standing at 0-0.

Drew: 3-3.

(5) Damian Reeves v Gloucester City (A) BSB North

Damian opts for power but blasts his spot kick wide of the keeper's left post (64 mins).

Drew: 0-0.

(6) Matt Doughty v Harrogate Town (H) BSB North

Doughty's 40th minute penalty is saved by Adam Nowakowski, an outfield player who has donned the goalkeeper's jersey as a result of the sending off of Craig MacGillivray.

Alty were 1-0 up at that juncture.

Won: 3-0.

(7) Shaun Densmore v Solihull Moors (H) BSB North

Shaun is unable to replicate his excellent penalty at Droylsden in the previous match and his underhit shot is easily saved by goalkeeper Jasbir Singh.

The score at the time was 0-0.

Won: 2-1.

I know that it's all hypothetical, however, in league terms only, I suppose that you could argue that Damian's miss in the goalless draw at Gloucester City is the only one which could really be described as a costly miss, as it potentially deprived us of two additional points.

Fascinating stuff. Remarkable that we're unbeaten in the games in which we've missed pens. If we get one at Chester, let's hope we miss it...

Equally though, as Rocky said to me earlier in the season, if we do get into the play-offs you wouldn't fancy us in a penalty shoot-out.

I reckon we we're all saying that in 2005 and look what happened...With Stu in goal we've always got a chance.

Difference to 2005 though, we had a few players who you felt confident with to take one. If we got to penalties in the play-offs, at the moment the only player I'd be confident with is Buzz.

Would I be right in saying the only player with as 100% success rate this season at pens is Ryan Brooke?

If the chaps could arrange for us not to miss any more this season I'd be grateful.

We had players with more 'bottle' but not as much ability. Colin we all knew would put one away, but the other 4 on the night were Mitten, Scott, Adams and Maddox, hardly names that fill you with confidence.

I reckon Little would be the only name on that list that would take one if you could choose from both teams.

You certainly would ! We'd better have him on the bench in case of a looming shoot-out.......

True about Aspinall but  I meant from the 5 that took one that night which i didn't make clear. Read the report earlier Chalmers came on for him after half time because of injury.

It was Aspinall that took the pen at Oxford wasn't it?  Which led to their fans trying to get 'justice' in the name of violence, just slightly more scary than the Colwyn bad men last week.

Yes - our one shot on goal in 90 minutes ... there's one ground I will NEVER return to.

Penalty 4 could be viewed as being quite costly Cult.

And I don't even want to think about the ramifications of penalty 5...
