Title: Wealdstone - Match Thread
Post by: MarpleAlty on September 13, 2023, 12:10:12 PM
Not a happy hunting ground for us - and yes, I'd happily take a point now.

The manager loves a bit of rotation - so I'm going out on a limb to suggest Burroughs be given a start. Lewis Baines absolutely MUST come back in.

                           Ross
          Burroughs  Roscoe  Baines
Donawa                                     E.Jones
                  Marriott  Osborne
         Amaluzor            Conn-Clarke
                          Angus

At home, and in more winnable fixtures (and when James Jones returns) I'd be keen to see us drop a defender and bring Matty Kosylo back in from the start.

Starting to look a bit threadbare already in terms of squad depth, I didn't think I'd be saying that this early into the season yet again.

Genuinely devastated about the injuries. A couple of weeks ago I was excited about the team.

Don't wish any injury on any player, but could argue our two best players have gone.

We need to get some players in and fast. Why don't we get dead legs, instead of bloody ACL injuries.

                                 Ross

Burroughs  Baines    Roscoe      Jones

                     Marriott  Osborne

Donowa            Con-Clarke        Amaluzor

                             Angus

Guessing  James Jones is still out.

Would rip your hand off for a point but very much doubt we'll avoid a sizeable reverse. 😒

PS. I guess the new ground and play offs are on the back burner (at best) for the moment? 🤔🙄

The only thing I don't like at the moment about four at the back is that we only have lefties available to us - and Cooper, who hasn't really kicked on at all.

And I don't think it would be sensible to bring Burroughs in from the start as a pairing.

We’re off to Wealdstone on Saturday via a day at the BMW golf at Wentworth..

We’re long overdue a goal (or2) at Grosvenor Vale.

Parky will give out the Battlecry for the visit to Wealdstone.

Wealdstone 1-2 Alty
Con-Clarke & Angus.

Agree with the opinion that Baines is a must pick, if fit.

What do people think the chances of us getting a clean sheet tomorrow are? (🙏)

We need Baines playing to have a chance of a clean sheet.
We can’t survive another season shipping goals can we?

We'll score enough goals this season (especially when Regan Linney returns).
But needing to score three per game to have a decent chance of winning a match is unrealistic. It does, however, tell you where the most pressing issue lies.

Clean sheet at one of our  bogey teams is a great result

A dull game between two sides that pretty much cancelled each other out. Alty clearly settled for a point mid way through the second half (not that we ever really liked like winning) but, miraculously, we showed we can defend and hang on against a determined side. I'd be more upset with the result if I was a home fan - they really should have put some of their chances away. Overall I'm happy with a point and relieved that we kept it to just two losses on the bounce, especially away from home. Onwards!

Poor game.

Con-Clarke continues to be wank

Play with a good goalkeeper and your best defence and guess what you get a clean sheet

Yeah, wasn't at his best. What's going on there? I wouldn't say he's lost his determination but he's not firing on all cylinders.

Wealdstone away is normally a sh*te away day. I’d of taken 0-0 all day long. Not our best performance but defensively sound. I’m guessing Baines was not fully fit due to not playing, but good to see him back in the starting line up. No surprise we end up with a clean sheet playing our best defender. Crickey was way off it and not having the best season so far. Ross and Amalouzor are the difference this season. Nearly home now and looking forward to Tuesday

Enjoyed the day overall, agree we weren’t brilliant but that clean sheet was excellent.

Baines, Cooper is a good pair in my eyes.

If we had our front men fit, I reckon we would have won that one.

Back home in drizzly Shropshire after a day in the Sun in outer London.

Really ponderous today. I’m a bit worried CCC might have a touch of the Adebayor syndrome. Brilliant when playing for a contract and rubbish almost overnight once he’s got one.

Chris is a special player for us. It took him a while to get going when he first joined us and we need to remember that his game time since he returned to Fleetwood has comprised of a dubious period in Ireland followed by a preseason where he hardly figured. He will come good.

CCC loves being at Alty and absolutely jumped at the chance to return when it arose. Sometimes it can be easy to forget how young he is. As said elsewhere, he will get his mojo back sooner rather than later and will undoubtedly be a key player for us for a long time. We certainly need him to be.

It may also be a factor that he recently became a father - maybe sleepless nights have kicked in.

Listened on RR, sounded a dogged performance, at a ground where we usually get nothing. To get a draw is a god way to stop the rot. Obviously our growing injury list doesn't help.

Onwards to Tuesday.

Good result for us there considering we have a few missing and never get much at Wealdstone so to pick up a point is very decent. Clean sheet as well making it all the more valuable in my eyes.
Sure CCC will come good, he's looked the part in flashes this season. No doubt he'll get into his stride soon enough

Four points from the upcoming two home games now would be fantastic and keep us right on track for our (and Parky's) target of a top half finish.

I agree, think CCC takes a while to get going. Didn't look fit in Ireland.

Very true about being a new dad, his energy levels will defo be hit.

Expect loans this week.

Won't be able to address all areas but still feel we need improvement up top, another winger, CM and RB ( unless Banks gets fitter and begins to overlap ).

I am not too worried about our CB's, really feel the width needs addressing, more direct attacking, wingers and fullbacks and also both able to defend the flanks.

Too many crosses come into our box. A fit James Jones and Baines, with more determination to win the crosses should be good enough.

Just listened to Phil’s interview post Wealdstone.

A very good interview and fair dos he acknowledged fans concerns re defensive frailties. Also fair dos that he picked a team that defended very well. As I have already said, a very good point was earned yesterday, well done to both management and players.

Much of the problem last season was naming a different back line every game - which wasn't the management's fault, and the same can largely be said of this season too. With the exception of Jones coming back in, I hope he doesn't plan to tinker too much with it - and hopefully he's conscious that switching so regularly between two defensive formations doesn't usually help either.

It seemed like a long way to travel to see a rather dull game but I am pleased that we came away with a point because it has been far from habitual for us to so over the years.

When we won the National League in 1979/80 and 1980/81 we beat them both times away (1-4 and 1-2 respectively).

It is still so very early in the season that nothing is out of reach for us just yet and we all know how good we are capable of being.  I maintain that we are still in line for a top season with lots of special memories being forged and committed to memory for altyfans.co.uk of the future.

Our luck always seems to abandon us just as we are starting to look good but between 1978 and 1982, Kingy & Co. made their own luck.  They were part-time, beer supping, dressing room door kicking, bad permed haircut heroes who never, ever gave up, even in the dying seconds of the game.

1978/1979 was supposed to be the year that we won the NPL title that had so eluded us, but Mossley eventually beat us to the title (and to the NPL Cup final at Maine Road where they subsequently defeated Northwich Vics) and had one of the best non-league teams that I can ever recall seeing.

Does anyone remember Leo Skeete (a prolific goal scoring centre-forward) ...or midfield maestro Eamonn O'Keefe (who signed for Everton the following season and was also capped for Ireland a number of times).  Anyway, I'm veering off topic as usual.  I just wanted to give this example of Alty's "never say die" attitude of the time.  We met Mossley in the two-legged semi-final of the NPL Cup that I have already revealed that they went on to win, however, the first leg played at Moss Lane saw us lagging behind 1-4 with about 10 minutes left to play.  The ground was evacuating quickly but I decided to wait until the end and was I pleased that I did as Alty won the leg 5-4.

Please don't ask what the score was in the return leg at Seel Park!!!
