Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Gateshead Replay Match Thread

I've already given my view of the incident. I'll add that Toby was at least trying to retain possession, which, for better or worse is the Alty way. You seem to think he should have hoofed it up the line or out of touch.
He was by the left hand touchline playing the ball into an area where he would reasonably expect to be. Where’s the logic in that? Yes, hoofing it upfield or into touch would have been infinitely more sensible.

Additionally, for the second goal his time attempting to catch the goalscorer was spent slowing down to a trot whilst appealing to the linesman for offside.

Both Mullarkey and JJones were better players alongside Hannigan and I suspect they continue to need that knowledgable old head. They cannot succeed alongside each other.

Ryan on the bench?

Indeed. Lucky to still be in the tie after slightly baffling team selection……
The baffling team selection was governed by the ludicrous decision to risk Bennett at Sandbach. His inability to now play before Christmas is going to bite us in the bum.
Did we really play in the FA Cup today? Did anyone tell the players? Not only did we see little cohesion, very little skill, no structure or plan but we also saw no desire whatsoever.
It’s all very well PP telling us what a great bunch of players we’ve got, and Bill Waterson waxing lyrical about how they are going to rival our best teams of the past, but I simply don’t see it.
Clearly Dorking was a flash in the pan not the beginning of some new dawn. It’s time PP started to turn this round and make it stick.

just looked at this investment scheme, its very complicated just to sign up,you have to correctlly answer 7 questions to do with general investing and i got 4 out of the 7 correct and was told i had failed,so i cannot invest in the clubWill spend some of my money on a book about    The Manchester, South Junction and Altrincham Railway: v. 34 (Oakwood Library of Railway History)
Dixon, Frank
Harold, if you got 4 right you must have been on the right lines but I don’t see how that book will enable you to keep track of the club’s progress. It could signal a diversification of your allegiances but it points to an interesting hobby. (I tried to fit Skelton Junction in but failed  :-\)

Double drat.

I wonder where we'd be if we had Langstaff?
Can he score enough goals to make up for the humungous number we concede?

Notes from the co-chairmen statement prior to the AGM in 2021:

“We enter the 2021-22 season with high ambitions, our sights set on our vision of aiming for Football League status in the next five years.”

That tells me we’re in year 2 of a loose 5-year vision.

I just hope that there hasn't been a loss of conviction or coherence in the transition to full-time.
There has. In addition there has been a loss of talent. If we look at the departing players and ask ourselves “are the replacements any better or at least as good” and the sad conclusion is “no”.
By name, who is better than Thompson, White, Hampson, Mooney, Hannigan, Moult, Hancock? Whilst it could be argued that a number of the old brigade would have struggled to last another season at National League level, we still needed replacements of equal or better calibre. We have neither.

The fact that we are full-time, and that fact has been glorified for weeks leading up to the season start, is utterly irrelevant if those full-time players have insufficient talent to make their mark at National League level.

Wasn’t Sports Psychology one of the areas of expertise that PP lectured upon in an earlier life? That skill needs to come to the fore now but preferably with players whose basic skill levels can meet the demands of our league.

Can't really complain about losing 2-1 on the balance of play . They are a big , physical , fast and skilful outfit who will be thereabouts at the end of the season yet we matched them for periods of the game and they never totally outplayed us .   Thought Toby was head and shoulders our best player . We still need a goalscorer , we still miss Marriott and Kossy and the keeper situation needs sorting asap .
Kingy was at the game yesterday , wonder who he supported ?

How we could use a John King in the centre of the park, such a commanding and motivating presence and a better player than he was given credit for too.  How long would the ref allow him to stay on the pitch though given that the modern game has lost a lot of its contact sport element?

He'd pick up enough red cards over the season to have a flush in a poker game ,😂
And with his surname it would have to be a Royal Flush. ;D

I’ve heard of another fundraising initiative due to be implemented shortly. This will involve the installation of carousels on the ground side of the turnstiles. Then, once you’ve been frisked by the stewards, anyone found to have cash in their pockets will be allowed through the turnstiles and strapped into the carousel. When the carousel is rotated vertically any money that falls out of your pocket, wallet or handbag will disappear down a chute to a vault labelled “For the benefit of Altrincham FC”, under Dawn’s cabin.

At the same time the club shop will be selling framed photographs showing the many ways you can milk the same cow. The cow will be on its knees.

I started go to Alty again after being a fairly irregular watcher in the 70s/80s for the 94/95 season and got hooked. Handy for home, not expensive to get in, lots of local away games, lots midweek too, relaxed atmosphere, stand where you want, i could go on. That's all gone now. I doubt I'll go to an away game this season and at £19 I don't think I'll go to every home game, especially if the team go on a losing run. I want entertainment, and if I ain't getting entertained I'm not paying for torture. I barely went in the recent relegation seasons, but I went to a lot in the Evostik and following NLN seasons. Why? Because it was fun, entertaining, relaxed (stand where you want  (pretty much)), bring your own sandwiches, lots of away games not too far away, and not too much to get in.

So in a nutshell I miss the non-league experience you got following Alty up to quite recently. That's definitely gone now - segregation, stewards every six feet, no leaning on the fence, security scans outside the ground.

I stopped going to the speedway at Belle Vue when getting in , parking and buying a programme started costing over twenty quid, and i wasn't the only one judging by the paltry attendances they get. I don't buy a programme at Alty or use the catering, but it doesn't seem that many years ago that paying £20 at Luton seemed a helluva a lot of money to watch a football match. £19 at Alty now seems a lot, especially when you look at the state of the place you're paying to go in to.
Excellent post. It’s how I feel too.
I’ve been watching since the mid-1950s and have always felt welcomed and needed.
Not now.

I’m only needed if I open my wallet and contribute to the many new revenue streams that have been dreamt up by the board. And I certainly don’t like being phoned to see why I’ve not bought a season ticket this year. The Altrincham and Moss Lane experiences are alien to me now.

I’ve lived in Bury since 1979 and have seen no more than 2 EFL matches since then. I’ve always supported my “home” team instead - Alty. But I think it could be an exciting time to watch football blossom at Gigg Lane once again and I may be tempted to become a regular for the first time in 43 years - the ground is superb, and I can walk to it.

I’m grateful to have lived through the White and Swales years and what has been, and is likely to ever be, the best years of Altrincham FC.

The problem is they initially have the volume far too loud..............
And then continue to have it far too loud for the whole fkn match. Is nobody paying attention? And I’m supposedly deaf. FFS

Seems the pitch side barriers at the away end can withstand a good leaning on.
But I don’t think the ones on the Pop Side can. The lone Alty supporter who deigned to pass a few minutes leaning on them had the full might of the Alty stewards come down on him and he was moved on.

Seems might is right is alive and well at Alty.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Website - Men's team squad
« on: July 12, 2022, 07:23:08 PM »
Really?  You think it’s unreasonable to suggest the the club website should have match reports from the preseason friendlies and a list of at least the names of the first team squad?  The club have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years but the website and the fanzine fiasco are not up to the required standard.

No one expects the club to get everything right all the time but we can point out shortcomings when we see them and the irritate us. Not being able to find the friendlies scores on the official site and having to go to an unofficial source on Saturday was irritating and given the ‘new website’ fanfare I’m providing my feedback on it.

Sadly, the alternative is to praise a job which is done to a less than professional standard because it has been done by a volunteer who is unable to accept criticism. Most organisations are run by such people and the result is usually mediocrity brought about by an unwillingness to challenge the status quo.

Give me function over form any day. Long live Alty Files.

Seen Macc are building a Fanzone.
Yes, I saw that in the Macclesfield Express. Two headlines, side by side:

“MACCLESFIELD TO BUILD FANZONE” and “LOCAL FARMER LOSES SHEEP PEN”
