Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Jim Harvey leaves Chester?
« on: January 10, 2010, 07:53:29 PM »
Chester will definitely see the season out. The latest rumour is that all the current squad can go as soon as they can find themselves a club and the season will be played out under the 'stewardship' of Maison who will bus in youngsters to form the team from his midlands 'centre of excellence' (wherever that it!) and re-group at the end of the season.

Some local thinking is that that will provide the breathing space for Ladak to clear the decks at Kettering so that he can move to Chester but this latter rumour seems to be a little less well supported. (I wouldn't bet against it though).

All in all however it's a GREAT time to be an Alty fan - and a conspicuous one - in the Chester/Wrexham area!  :D :D :D :D

Didn't Ernie Taylor turn out for us in the early 60's ? He'd been a classy inside forward, and had the distinction of having appeared in the FA Cup Final  for three different teams (Newcastle, Blackpool, and Man.U.). Unfortunately he was past his sell by date when he reached Moss Lane.

Mickey Walker, a decent inside forward some years later, recently had a spell as caretaker manager at Doncaster Rovers.

I'm fairly sure that was a different Mickey Walker (unless we've had more than one playing for us - the one I'm thinking of played in the early 70's).

Vaughan and his cronies are just an absolute bunch of arseholes. It stinks what they've done to that club.
Careful, ALTY 1981. You just might have to go into a witness protection scheme if Mister Vaughan reads those comments...! I could never understand why Jim Harvey ever set foot in that club in the first place.

According to my excellent source at the Deva (who I met in the paper shop this morning!) he's just sold his house in Hereford and was desperate to make the job work at Chester because he wants to live in the (general/commuting) area where his kids go to school. He was hoping for the Tranmere job which would, for him, have been the dream scenario but is still hoping to get in at Kiddie - which, ironically, would now give him a commute the other way.

Was Albert Quixall the owner of the scrap metal dealers on Brown Street A & P Quixall?

yes. Freddie Pye, who was in the business himself, had a lot to do with his start in that 'game'.

And, if I recall correctly, that's how he came to turn out for us when Freddie was manager.

Blue Square  Premier Semi Final 1st Legs 29th & 30th APRIL 2010. 2ND legs 3rd & th MAY 2010. Play Off Promotion Final Sunday 16th May 2010, Wembley National Stadium.

one-off semis on 8/9 May, final can stay where it is. Isn't that a fair amount of time gained?

To be honest, that second half against FGR the other year seemed like 100 years in itself to me.  ;)

On the evidence of the hat, is that snowman a homage to Paul Showler, by any chance?

on the evidence of the body, it could be Tunna, Cult!  :D

What's happened about the Eastbourne game? I thought they were in front of the League yesterday?

usual retort from the regulator.

we would have won that game hands down with a little vision and ingenuity. Stop making execuses.  I made a fair assessment, and the other 3 in my car agreed.

dino,

Would that be Fred & Wilma Flintstone and their daughter, Pebbles, by any chance....?

Well that's my first christmas "ho ho ho" since playing santa! Well done Cult!

Perhaps Dino's name is a typo? (i.e. should have been 'ld' instead of 'n')

The reason Joe O'Neill is playing well is because he's the best player on the team, making everyone pass to him and also the blue sq north is a poor league. He was a headless chicken at alty and still would be if he returned.

Joe was always a great trier at Alty and, in my view, not a headless chicken. Although he didn't score anything like enough, I had a lot of time for him (although player of the year was a few steps too far IMO) Unfortunately as Cult and others have said, he just wasn't good enough.

I liked Joe very much - especially the knocking knees thing with Graham Barrow vs Chester but, good as he was, he wouldn't even make my top 5 Alty keepers

The great Peter Eales performed that manoeuvre with far more style though, Saughall...!

Yes, True Cult - and Goodison Park springs to mind particularly - but he didn't do the "pinning down the angry opposition player without really hurting him yet nevertheless making him look a proper tw*t" precursor to it!  ;)

I must admit though, Peter Eales would have been in my top five easily.

Grantham away in the FA cup in the 60's for me. I believe I've already told the story on here about having to stand a a slight crouch to prevent my kneecaps going up and down with the cold?! (but it IS true!)
