Altrincham FC First Team / Re: How many will Wrexham bring?
« on: January 30, 2023, 10:21:37 PM »
Why? We’re going to most likely lose heavily anyway. We may as well try and make as much money from the fixture as possible to help fund the squad as we go on. We should be looking to pack in as many as we are (safely) able to.

Agreed, a touch of realism required here - our season doesn't ride on the on-pitch result, but the money we can bring in through the gate on the evening could possibly make a difference.

Okay, lets piss off anyone who stands under the gantry, and any one who stands under the flaggers stand to accomodate the once* a season fans.

Sure theyll be delighted to be moved, without comms.

We're making 2nd class fans for another side on national TV

Totally agree with Jack.
Fans are the Bedrock of any sports club, why should home fans be squeezed out just so the away fans can outnumber the home fans. The next time Altrincham FC launch a crowd funding scheme I will guarantee no Wrexham fans will be sending any donations.
I realise the income is important but surrendering home support standing room will not generate enough extra   money to make a big enough difference.

Maybe we should employ a Welsh speaking ground announcer to make the Wrexham hoards really feel at home..

As others have said this game won’t be an easy watch anyway, let’s not make it even easier for them..

Don't worry, most Wrexham fans speak good English.  ;)

Some of us can also speak some Welsh, too, though, I should add.
With an expected crowd of 4000, the majority of whom will be home fans, we surely don't want the home fans to be crammed into a restricted section of the ground. As Mrs Warbouys describes, a well supported away club gets a decent proportion of the ground. I see no reason for any greater area than that, as it's not as if the rest of the ground will be empty.

It's just that, with a reported capacity of  5,000, it seems a pity not to use as much of it as possible. I don't mind that much where I stand, so long as I (and any other Altrincham supporter) can see the game. Prove me wrong...

Also a season ticket holder!

I agree, a lot needs doing to the pop side and indeed the away end - and I think of for example what is on offer at Burton Albion. And I look forward to things like this happening in the future. The more money we make, the sooner this can happen. Can people take short term inconveniences for the greater good? If of course there turns out to be such a depth of feeling against giving up part of the popular side to the extent that this does more harm than good, then obviously I am willing to accept that this could be a bad idea (even though it doesn't bother me. Much). I'd just like to see evidence for this though, that is all.

Wrexham supporters have indeed used our bar in the past (and we have used Chester "City"'s bar for that matter), and I would certainly prefer it if they were still able to do so (with all due respect to the King George pub).

They are getting what  every big following gets? 1600. A block of the family stand, bottom third of the pop side and the chequers that’s why the fencing is where it is. Exactly the same as Oldham. It’s hardly going to be like people can change ends with 4000 in anyway

Spot on, as usual.

We gave Wrexham this many when they played here on a bank holiday a few years back! Personally I would be happy to give them the whole popular side if it meant a bigger crowd, but I suppose there may be problems with that.

Why the f**k would you do that.

Why not? Not hard to think of reasons why we would do that (though whether they are stronger than the ones against is a matter for debate - which I am doing in good faith and in a good spirit despite the meltdown!). And I should add that last season was the first time  in our history that segregtion was the norm for league games thus denying home supporters the Chequers End, but, as I say, I and others adapted. Do try thinking about what you say.

Most games weren't segregated until relatively recently though were they? People who used to stand there adapted, and people who stood on that half of the pop side will adapt to the loss of that section that the increased number of games with large away support have made necessary. Meltdown is the word, and I ask again, what is the big deal? I have adapted to changes without going off on one to people who disagree. Whilst in some ways not ideal, I reiterate that if  there is the demand from Wrexham supporters, and if home supporters would not fill the rest of the ground, giving most or all of the pop side to away supporters in this case would be the sensible thing to do if feasible. And we know that away supporters will go in home sections for these games if not given sufficient capacity, as happened for the Oldham game.

I saw a couple who supported FC Halifax Town at a hotel in the lakes (in 2019?). They were alright to be fair and looked forward to possibly seeing us in the Conference in the futureif we got promoted. I also saw a Chester "City" supporter up Snowdon in 2020 who told me he hated Alty and was tired of losing to us, which was quite funny.(Incidentally, is it true about all the pubs in Paisley closing down at one point, similar to Partington?).

People who like to stand on the Chequers End are already p'd off most matches presumably so it's a bit late for that. Would it be such a big deal for most people to give up half of the pop side (or indeed more) for one match? And I don't see that it would make any difference to the result. No segregation on Saturday but we still got beaten by a better team, the same is likely (but not certain) to happen with Wrexham.

Anyway, back to "real" non-league tomorrow!

To go down, we would have to do pretty much as badly as in the first nine games, and for the rest of the season. I don't see that happening once the new players bed in (and with this in mind I hope they play on  Tuesday). And the club could always bring in further reinforcements if things were lookingbad. Boreham Wood did  look a class apart today. Other clubs won't be.

Altrincham FC First Team / How many will Wrexham bring?
« on: January 28, 2023, 09:13:10 PM »
I assume that table-topping Wrexham could easily bring over 2,000 for their closest NL match of the season next Saturday. If they do, will we give them the whole of the popular side? Or will we put a limit on away support or just make the whole match all-ticket? Will we give Wrexham extra seats (and I think of the Oldham match where there was apparently some Oldham in the main stand)? And how many (and who) will we bring for that matter? I assume that our capacity is still 5,000 so it should be enough but things may have to be different from normal. I certainly wouldn't be surprised by a first (regular) league crowd of over 4,000 since the 1991 Barnet game (allegedly).

Altrincham FC First Team / Service in the fanzone much improved.
« on: January 28, 2023, 09:03:08 PM »
Standing at the back of the Chequers End until the half time whistle today, after the early teething troubles  I was pleasantly surprised to find I had time to both get served and finish my very nice porter in the fanzone (by which time the queue had almost gone) in good time for the start of the second half, even with a crowd of (supposedly) nearly 2,000. This bodes well for future big games this season, and I look forward to further improvements in the future when a roof and heating is added and the food pod opens.

There is certainly no hatred....he trys his best in my opinion and that 'best' proves not to be good enough at our level during 4 matches out of five.
It is not his fault he is selected. The club has failed miserably again to recruit a Conference  National level number 9. He and Hulme are our best sub-standard options at the moment.

To point out also that both Hulme and Dinanga would be considered to be top class in the division below. It is all about levels and we seem to have gambled on players stepping up and in this case it has not worked as well as hoped

Mick, I’d have to question whether Hulme in particular or Dinanga would be considered top class in the level below. Though you could give credence to Dinanga’s good spell at Dartford. I just think we may be assuming they’re better than they are.

I do still think there are players in them to be fair but the fact is, we have lost two players in Colclough and Newby (who was filling an empty gap) who simply must be replaced.

It’s a big step but we may need to spend money. We are simply operating at 82% of potential from November. That’s not good enough.

Speaking of which, when did we last spend money on a player (to your knowledge)? We have the money from Colclough, plus presumably a substantial amount for Mullarkey if he goes to Grimsby or someone (though I will assume he's staying until the club say otherwise), we have crowds of two thousand. Now is surely the time to put in a good bid if the right player is available. If not now, when?

I agree re. Dinanga but the fact is (and it is a fact) he has scored more goals than Jordan.

If only he scored more often than once in every 5 or 6 genuine opportunities he's presented with. He's a total waste of space at this level.

I don't know, I think the jury's still out on that. He's not John Brady maybe (or even Dickie "90 minutes" Landon"), but I did think he was getting into his stride a bit earlier this season before the loan signings restricted his game time. Alan Shearer often berates strikers for not taking a gamble to get on the end of crosses, and I agree it's a skill getting in those positions.

I think you might have got confused here Hugh, or I’m misreading your post, but if you think John Brady was a waste of space at conference level then I can’t help you. His 90/91 season is on a par with the best strikers in our history.

The only defence I can present for Mr. Cooper Your Honour is that his Alty watching may have started in the 91/92 season when Mr Brady’s morale and commitment had dipped somewhat before his November move to Barrow.

No that's not what I meant! Dinanga's not in the class of Brady or Landon (in shots per goal ratio) but was starting to look the part earlier this season.

I was watching the Barnet match again only the other night ( still one of the best games I've attended). A great finish by Brady for the first goal. I was actually going to post about this, and how his contribution sometimes gets overlooked. Very nearly a brilliant goal by Gary Anderson in that game by the way.

I should also add that I just twigged watching that again that Tony Incenzo of Sportscast that day must be the same guy now writing for the NLP.

Yes, hence the caveat about strikers. And I don't doubt that he was a lovely bloke (and probably quite thick skinned). But better than Dinanga?
