What about

Hartlepool
SC**thorpe
Darlington?

That would make 14!

Brian,

You've overdosed on the red wine again, I'm afraid...!

We've played (and defeated) Hartlepool at Moss Lane but have never played them on their ground.

As for Darlington, we played at their old ground, Feethams, on two occasions:
(i) 0-0 in the FA Cup in 1983;
(ii) a 2-0 defeat in the GM Vauxhall Conference back in February 1990.

They relocated to their present stadium in 2003.

Re. SC**thorpe United: I refer you to my previous posting...

I consider myself suitably admonisssssssshed! (hic)

So, JTH takes the plaudits and wins a tour around Altrincham in an open-top Goodwin's bus.

The TEN grounds are as follows:

1. Goodison Park: Everton (FA Cup);

2. Saltergate, Chesterfield: Gainsborough Trinity (Unibond Cup Final);

3. Ewood Park: Blackburn Rovers (FA Cup);

4. Britannia Stadium, Stoke: Eastbourne Borough (Conference North v South Play-Off Final);

5. St. Andrews: Birmingham City (FA Cup);

6. Valley Parade: Bradford Park Avenue (NPL);

7. Edgar Street: Hereford United (Conference);

8. Spotland: Rochdale (FA Cup);

9. Bloomfield Road: Blackpool (FA Cup);

10. Bramall Lane: Sheffield United (FA Cup).

Can't it be Gordon's old 1930s bus we had to travel around in for AGS matches?

To summarise (and enhance) the above: grounds where football is no longer played:

Maine Road (FA Cup)
Springfield Park (NPL)
Millmoor (FAC) - is this the only league ground on which we have won, drawn and lost whilst it was a FL ground?
Belle Vue (FAT)
Whatever Darlington's old ground was called (FA Cup)
Old Show Ground (APL)
Eton Park (NPL)
Loakes Park (FAT)
The Huish (APL)

Existing Football League Grounds where we have played and lost: (so in addition to the 10)

Of the current 92 FL grounds, we have played competititve fixtures at 33 of them!

1st Division
Old Trafford (FA Cup)
Anfield (FA Cup)
White Hart lane (FA Cup)
Molineaux (FA Cup)
Turf Moor (FA Cup)

2nd Division
Deepdale (FAC)

3rd Division
Gresty Road (CSC)
Brisbane Road (FAC)
St James Park (APL)
Edgeley Park (CSC)
Prenton Park (Cheshire League)
Adams Park (APL)
Huish Park (APL)

4th Division
Moss Rose (CL)
Christie Park (NPL)
Recreation Ground (APL)
Crown Ground (APL)
Pirelli Stadium (APL)
Plainmoor (APL)
Underhill (APL)
Whaddon Lane (APL)
Victoria Road (APL)
Sincil Bank (APL)

Plus the fact that the Crewe fans will probably thank you for promoting their club - they're in the bottom tier of the FL now aren't they?

Of the 90+ grounds I've been to watching Alty, nearly half no longer have football played at them anymore.

My dad took me to see Alty away at Sandbach Ramblers way back in the mid 70's. Not sure where they are now or if the ground still exists.

I'm guessing it was a Cheshire Senior Cup game, or perhaps an early FA Cup qualifier.

It was either one of our "greatest failures" CSC Rd 2 1971-2 Sandbach ramblers 2 Alty 1

or the slightly better CSC Rd 1 1974-5 Sandbach Ramblers 0 Alty 1 (scorer: G Heathcote)

Sandbach Ramblers disbanded at the end of the 74-75 season after finishing 3rd in the Cheshire League

Mr Guru,

I have Alty playing Sandbach Ramblers at Moss Lane in the Cheshire Senior Cup First Round on 25th January 1975.
We won 2-0 courtesy of goals from Graham Heathcote and John Davison.

That 2-1 defeat at Sandbach Ramblers occurred on 19th February 1972.

I must have attended the defeat but surprised it was as long ago as 1972. Hmm, probably was, as I think Willie Mailey was in goal.I recall he got a fair bit of stick from the locals.

9. Bloomfield Road: Blackpool (FA Cup);

10. Bramall Lane: Sheffield United (FA Cup).

Just to point out that Chesterfield FC play at the Recreation Ground, which is on Saltergate. Saltergate is however quoted as the ground name that often that it has 'become' the name of the ground.

I suppose that The Boleyn Ground, Upton Park is another example.........do I get a trip in the open top bus ?

I was unsure of both the result and the venue for the 74-75 game - it was not always clear what was going on that season!  I bow to your knowledge and sources, Mr Cult.

SW,

It would indeed have been Willie Mailey, as he was ever-present in the Alty side during that 1971/72 season.

Just for the record, Darlington's old ground was the rather quaint Feethams, which adjoined a cricket pitch used by Durham when they were still a Minor Counties side.
