Title: Pre Madonna
Post by: SW on January 12, 2011, 12:00:39 AM
Sorry if I'm a fussy old bastard but I keep seeing this on here and it rankles. No one is regarded as being before the mother of Jesus, or perhaps being celebrated prior to a certain American pop singer's appearance.

It is Prima Donna, from the Latin, now used sarcastically as in you think you are special but you are not.

I really don't get it, I spell loosely and use words loosely as todays language socially is pretty loose in reality anyway, Facebook, Twitter and forums should never turn into dictionary wars imo

[old fart] I'm with SW. I may be old school but all my texts and emails use proper spelling and grammar, whether on forums or not. A person who rushes to make a point, using text speak or, tends to make me think that they're speaking first and thinking later, which tends to blunt the force of any argument they might be making. [/old fart]

He is coming to England in February to a big club to discuss options.

I "should of" thought I was the only one left who texted in the Queen's English ! Another pet hate of mine is the phrase "ten to the dozen" which makes no sense whatsover since ten is less than twelve. "Nineteen to the dozen" on the other hand........

I also hate textspeak, which is killing our language. Rant over, CUL8R.....................

You're not (though as a Republican I don't think its Mrs. Windsors English).  I type in each letter, every time.  I do it because some people find it annoying. Personally I find it damn hard to decipher what some 'textspeak' means e.g. "SMH" and "gr8".

The English language should be cherished.

I agree that a forum isn't the place to police it but pre madonna drives me mad.

I also hate 'revert back', just revert is enough. The more extreme example being permeate through. Just permeate ffs!

Twitter and texts limit characters, but forums don't. Why the rush? I'm not arsed about spelling and grammar. Just make sense please

One last pet peeve: any book subtitled "my autobiography". Whose else is it going to be?

It's not even about relaxed spelling and grammar, it's a completely different word/phrase with a different meaning!

Londoners say "off of"

eg, I got off of the bus

I borrowed a quid off of him.

Sheer nonsense and abuse of the language.

In the same vein "almost exactly" ! I also hate managers who refer to "the football club" - what other sort of club might they be talking about in a football interview ? D-oh ! !

Tut tut. Let me correct that for you.

Arsed. It's a football forum, isn't it? It's not a teachers' forum, you know.

The thing that makes no sense is that you wish to communicate something and the medium you have chosen is the world wide web.  This means you should be thinking about how your message can be understood by the people across the world, which logically is clear English (or Chinese Mandarin).

Anyway - complaint over now - you do your thing and I'll do mine.

COME ON ALTY
