Saints boss McKenna to step down

from bbc sport - wales

Manager Ken McKenna will leave The New Saints at the end of the season after almost 10 years with the club.
McKenna has taken the club into Europe seven times, winning three back-to-back Welsh Premier titles in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and being runners-up three times.

He has also won the FAW Premier Cup, Welsh Cup and Loosemores League Cup during the past three years.

"Ken has reached the stage of his career where he needs a new challenge," said TNS managing director Mike Harris.

The Saints have not looked convincing this season, despite lying second in the WPL table, and they recently lost to Carmarthen in the financially lucrative FAW Premier Cup.

"We will always be grateful for Ken's massive contribution to the club, not only with on-the-field successes, but in helping to develop our off-field coaching infrastructure," added Harris in a club statement.

"We now hope that he can end his TNS career on a high by delivering a record-equalling fourth consecutive Welsh Premier title to the club.

"We will be taking a considered approach to a new appointment, but whoever replaces Ken will have very big shoes to fill."

As much as we appreciate what GH has done, if Ken was interested in Alty then it would be a no brainer.

The financial shackles may not appeal to him, especially if he has enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond with TNS.

This is purely theoretical as GH is still manager. However, if McKenna came in I think it would undermine him to have the previous manager sat in the stand behind him. It should be one or the other but not both.
