Agreed on all 3 positions , Durrell or Hannah would be ideal or Padraig Amond if we could get him. Not sure what central midfielders or wingers would be available.
-
2 centre midfields a right winger and a defender who is versatile I'd also never play lawrie on the wing again
-
Durrell, an experienced Cav-like central midfield enforcer and a decent utility player who can double up as a full-back in the event of injury to Dens or Griff.
-

We clearly need more than 3 the squad was to small and lucky with injuries last season
-
I think 6 left and 3 have joined, so I'd say the budget will dictate we'll bring in 3 more.
-
Not sure now about another forward, if you assume that reeves and rankine play or sometimes one or the other then the third striker will spend a considerable amount of time on the bench. This being the case it would be best to go with an up and coming youngster who wants to take their chance when given
-
If we go down that route then as well as our own youths, then have a look any young lads in the nwcl
http://www.nwcfl.com/leading-goalscorers.php
Evostick league strikers are usually established or well contracted, where's as the nwcl youngsters may be happy to be duel contracted or sit on the bench but get decent coaching
-
Ross Hannah signs for Chester
-
Think Sam Heathcote and Joel Swift will sign forms as cover
-
Need to sign Elliott Durell, I've already made a song up
-
I'd have been quite happy with keeping Perry as 3rd choice (the problem last season was relying on him as 2nd choice) - then again the release of his wage might have facilitated Rankine coming on board - who knows
Let's see what else Lee has up his sleeve
-

Think the trick is to get a good enough striker to push Rankine into 3rd place.
-
But essentially the main thing is, replacing Parton/Williams/Perry with Deasy/O'Keefe/Rankine is fine but Cavanagh (when fit) and Gillespie (should have been) first name on sheet players so their replacements have to be really good.
Obviously not as simple as just popping out to the Cav/Gillespie shop but if they aren't then we are weakened.
We did knock off a bit last year yes but we don't have 'that' much room for manoeuvre.

or have a third striker who can compete with reeves and Rankine and then we can pick a team based on form,

we need at least 3 decent forwards, that was the plan last season
Also if we want to push on we need to able to play a more expansive game when required
-
Another striker is a must in my opinion, three strikers if lawrie is classed as a striker isnt enough.

That Striker for Glossop looks a good prospect - Keiron something or other. ::)

Great post, succinctly put. Agree 100%. I would say we still need midfield 'general' and another (possibly wide) striker. Also a predominantly left-sided defensive player would be a bonus.
I don't totally subscribe to the view that we 'clocked off' with half a dozen games to go. I prefer to think that the small squad was worn out by that time. This was exacerbated with the injury to Shaun (irreplaceable IMO) and the bookings/suspensions. A larger squad would go some way to addressing that - assuming that at least three more players came in and were starter material. We could also do with having the confidence to give at least two of the youngsters we pretended were in the squad last year some game time and blood them for when they might be needed. I would suggest a defender and a forward.
-
a bit like the situation with coburn though last season, lee shows a lot of faith in players and many (marshall etc) have repaid this, signing and then sitting on the bench is no fun
-
Need to sign Elliott Durell, I've already made a song up
Is that the one that goes "You're sh*t and you know you are" ?
-

If that is the case and I don't believe it is we have players worse than sh*t
-
Durrell would be a good signing. However, I can see Barrow offering him the chance to remain full time.
Will be interesting to see who else we are able to bring in.
-
Barrow a long way from the midlands but I agree I dought he will come here anyway
-
Surely he'd go and live up there if he was full-time. Can't be worse living in Barrow than the midlands.
-
Training in Lancaster daily so could move there.

Correct. At the Uni i beleive. They tried something similar years ago, training in North Manchester area, the difference this time is the cash they have.
-
In the days of the training in Manchester I think it was because so many of the players and managemnt were Manchester/West Yorkshire based it minimised travelling

Well house prices would be cheaper I surpose that depends which part in the midlands you mean on it being better than barrow

Not sure how many non leauge players move houses contracts probably only 2 years it might take a year to sell and buy house

Barrow loads ?

At the advent of last season, Lee Sinnott declared that he wanted a squad which comprised a total of 19 players.
That figure was swiftly reduced to 18 when Mike Williams announced his retirement and was then not replaced.
The loan spell of Greg Wilkinson at Stockport County then further decreased the size of the squad to 17.
Our only recruit during the season, one Jordan Sinnott, then bolstered the squad back up to the sum of 18.
On the premise that Mister Sinnott still regards 19 players as being the optimum quota for his squad, we currently have four vacancies (that is, unless Jordan Sinnott is still in the picture though).

Sincerely hope NOT ???
-
Updated, I make that 16 now
-
If we are to go with 19 for me that's another forward a midfielder and a defender we were very lucky with injuries last season and to only have 5 defenders most of the season was a huge risk
-
No deacey, Sinnott Jnr or Mr Trialist on show yesterday? What conclusions can we draw from that? Still need and auxiliary forward and a couple of others, wonder if we will see some different trailists over the next week or we've identified who specifically we want.
-
Big shame about Deacey - just hope he was on holiday or something. Mr. Trialist was probably trialling out for a league team yesterday.
-
Updated, and we are on 17 players now, that's not inclusive of any youngsters that may sign first team forms. Still need a couple more, be it A Trialist or another forward, and I think we really need some pace/energy. in terms of cover we aren't doing too bad for players that can play more than one position
-
Think we need 1 more defender as 5 isn't enough and then the balance is about right probably haven't the funds to have a player good enough to start in defence though

Since you're not able to suffer preseason like some of us......Clee has been tried at left back a couple of times. And Griffith played right back for Port Vale some years back. Maybe Lee thinks these are quick fixes.
-
I think if I was manager I'd want at least 6 real defenders I understand players can be versatile but it's not ideal
-
I agree but we only had 5 for most of last year. Sinnot Jr has also been tried at RB. Challenge is who would we get in, CB is covered as we have three quality players there so need an extra FB.
Dens or Griffin are decent first XI so either we pay big money for someone better than one of them and drop them (probably out of the squad entirely because Leather's versatility makes him the obvious defensive bench spot - or Marshall so Leather can move if first choice CB). I can't see this as realistic so we are looking for a full back to cover ideally both FB spots while still being cheap enough and happy not to be in the match day squad when everyone's fit. I don't think such a person exists.
I've changed my mind - I think we have to go with the 5 we've got and make do with Leather at full back if needed and we only have a problem if 2 out of the 5 are unavailable then it's Sinnot Jr, Griffith or Clee to fill in. This shouldn't be needed often enough to justify another wage. Long term issue to any of our defenders and we'd need a loan in sharpish though!
-
LS used young Heathcote uite a bit pre-season, which makes me think he may consider him as our 6th defender.

we were extremely fortunate with injuries last season and when dens got injured we suffered a shocking run
-
Personally I think we have enough cover all over the pitch now.
The squad looks complete.
We simply cant afford to bring in players to sit on the bench in case of injury. If we did then they would not be decent calibre and LS would be slated for bringing in poor players. No win situation for the club.
We have to be realistic.
-
It's hardly unrealistic to have 6 defenders in a squad even a small squad
-
There have been released defenders in the local market that have been realistic signings, e.g. Josh Thompson (Southport) and Rob Atkinson (Guiseley).
We'll never find out whether we're making enquiries, or simply keeping our wallet shut - I suspect the latter.
-
We have Griffith, Sinnott and Clee to stand in as defenders if needs be. Not ideal, particularly Clee I know, but we do have some cover available on a short term basis.
-
before injury to Mike Williams we had room for 6 defenders

Or we could have made the enquiries and there wasn't enough in the wallet to take it further?

Or this :P
Do Guiseley & Southport have bigger budgets than us? (honest question)
-
Id say guiseley do but southport don't but that is a bit of a guess
-
I agree that ideally I'd want 6 defenders I just think that with the 5 we've got it's hard to see the type of player that we'd need to get in as a 6th other than a youth team graduate type player who is happy just to be in the squad. If we got a new first choice left back for example would Griff hang around?
-
The problem is complacency the defence can play badly and they will still retain place there is room for 8 midfielders and only 5 defenders that isn't the best ballance
-

That is a very valid point.
-
Indeed it is but the point remains - what sort of player can we get as a 6th defender? The centre backs face competition so we'd need someone good enough to keep dens and Grif on their toes - mainly Grif as Leather is capable of playing RB. The perennial search for a left back goes is back!
