At the moment, who are our biggest rivals?
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:35:54 PM »

Ok, let's say that Macc are still our number one rival for historical/romantic reasons even though we've not played each other for years.

Who comes in in second place?

There aren't many obvious candidates. I'm not even sure which Vics club is which so it's pretty hard to have a rivalry.

Runcorn are still nowhere to be seen. The Tameside clubs all compete with each other more than they do with us and it's just difficult to get too worked up about any of them.

Southport are a decent shout even though they're hardly local, a club quite similar to us and we've had some cracking games in the past. There will always be history with Barrow but they're just too far away for them to be massive rivals.

I can actually see FCUM becoming one of our biggest rivals over the next few years.

So, who are out top three rivals at the minute?

macc ,hopefully be playing them next season, can see us disliking fcum if we play them enough , stockport are too big to be rivals and the tamseide clubs are too small

Northwich
Macclesfield
Runcorn

This is the traditionalist answer.

However, our rivalries are not written in stone. We used to be big rivals with Wigan but I don't think many people consider them rivals now.

For me Runcorn are no longer our rivals.

Stockport WERE too big. Alas, I can smell the phoenix club already.

We just might pass Macc coming down if we go up this season......and the optimist in me suggests Accrington could be "the team we love to hate" next season.

Macc

...it's hard to see beyond them at the moment.  Could have built a case for saying Chester, or even York (at one point we were the closest away league game I think), but for clubs close to Alty similarish in size - it's the nonsense of Tameside.

I'd say either FC United or Brackley

Don't understand the thread - rivals don't change when you don't play

Let's see...

"We hate Northwhich Victoria" (no longer exist in any recongnisable form. Breakaway 1874 Northwich play in NWCL)
"We hate Macclesfield too" (haven't played in four years and how long for this world?)
"We hate Witton..." (currently in the NPL and never that big a rival)
"...and Runcorn" (no longer exist, replaced by the Linnets but play in NWCL)
"But Alty we love you" (something we can agree on)

I actually quite like Witton. Was that ever a rivalry?

Macclesfield and Northwich

Imagine FCUM get promoted and we don't. Imagine that next season it's between us and them at the top of the league, both league games are hotly contested drawing large crowds.

Imagine that we both get promoted and we are both at the bottom of the Conference trying to scrape enough points to stay up.

Imagine we play each other in the FA Cup.

Surely this would go a long way to establishing FCUM as one of our main rivals? It would seem silly to say that FCUM can't be our rivals in 2015 because they weren't our rivals in 1975.

Macc.
To  a lesser extent Southport and Barrow, rivalry is built over years, cant see FCUM ever being a true rival on par with Macc or Northwich.

How can the younger generation of fans see Macc or Vics as rivals? In a way, it seems a bit plastic for those who've never seen Macc play or come across any of their fans really have any feelings towards them.

FCUM seem like a club who you can't help but despise, though not sure it's actually a rivalry...yet.
