I’ll put it on here rather than the non Alty fc chat with it being so quiet in June.
Massive win for Russia, that five goal haul gives them a chance of getting though with another point from their next two games. What a position they’ll be in if Uruguay and Egypt draw tomorrow lunchtime
-
Cheering on Uruguay here, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing how their take-no-prisoners defenders 'nullify' Mo Salah on Friday.
-
Salah will be fine unless Suarez bites him.
-
I have Saudi in the office sweepstake. The £10 consolation for the team with the fewest points and worst goal difference is all mine.
-
Would we beat Saudi Arabia?
-
Really pleased with my £100 bet on Spain the day before they sack their manager. >:( ;D
-
Real & Barca arguments
-
I fancy Germany to edge France in the final. I've stuck £2.50 on Germany to win it and Griezman to win the golden boot at 80/1.
-
Brazil for me. Neymar to outscore England 25/1.
-
Ive got Tunisia in the work sweepstake...
Quite optimistic about England...they've got a bit of a PP Alty look about them with lots of cover in all positions and a young no fear outlook......
How dire were Saudi Arabia??....but great finishing under what must be some pressure by the Russians....
-
I note that the 2026 tournament will be extended to 48 countries. Having seen Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, and Iran already I'd say the existing 32 is way too many.
-
I've had a bet on Belgium
-
I have a feeling Serbia might be the dark horses - especially seeing as Brazil and Germany might meet earlier on and open up that side of the draw.
-
I still think Germany will win it in spite of yesterday's result. A few countries such as Portugal and Serbia will be very difficult to beat and you'd always fancy them on penalties. The tournament is quite open for a change and has captured my interest more than I thought it would.
-
Come on England.
-
It’s been a superb opening few days, some great games, I’ve a feeling this England team is far more tournament ready than most in recent history despite their young age. No press pantomime (yet). No stupid “golden generation” label for a squad where Ashley Cole and beckham were the only world class players No vacuous tarts wandering around stealing the limelight and the focus of the players. A manager that can speak English and has gone through this whole process with England in the modern era as a player. We won’t we win it, but with this early batch of results it might be our best chance for a while
-
Have to defend better than that 1st half and I'll be surprised if Jesse Lindgard finished his tea!
-
Should be three up. Trust us to get the first poor referee
-
What is the point in VAR if they didn't look at any of the three times Kane was assaulted in the box?!
-
Seems like a very familiar tale so far.
-
what is the point in having VAR if they let the swiss goal stand and don't give clear and obvious penalties like last night when Kane was rugby wrestled to the floor??
I was really impressed with England apart from our panicked snatched at finishing....and that's the difference when you've got an in form world class striker like Kane who didn't panic just made sure stayed calm and directed the ball calmly into the net....
Hopefully the draw will open up for us and we can get to the semi at which point anything can happen.
I stick by what I said...that was quite like watching Phil Parky's alty with some lovely football, bit of a lack of quality sometimes but lots of quality in the two goals and a keep going attitude against a Tunisian side who make shaw lane look like fair play award winners...
Kane is our Jordan Hulme!!....but JJ is a class above Sterling who for me very disappointingly reverted to the country sterling last night.....as opposed to the club player who we heard now delivers when in position....
-
Well everyone's played one game now, star of the tournament so far is Cristiano Ronaldo but as for the team so far the honour goes to Mexico for beating the Germans closely followed by Russia for not sitting on a one goal lead other than that everyone else has flattered to deceive. in the words of the song "things can only get better"
-
I fancied Japan to beat Colombia but forgot to put a bet on.
-
We really should be beating teams like this
We are going to piss this tinpot leauge
With all due respect
Etc
-
By the time we play Belgium we will know who our opponents will be in the last 16
Do we want japan or Columbia?
If we have a preference we may be better off finishing 2nd....
I think we just keep momentum and go for it Vs Belgium...lets face it we could save harry kane and he could get injured in training anyway.
Still liking the PP look about the way England are set up as a squad...
I think we need to get Rashford going and would drop sterling ...

Definitely Japan. Colombia looked very useful tonight, and could cause us a lot of problems. Assuming they beat Senegal of course (and they'd give us a good game too !)
-
It doesn't sit well with me wanting England to finish 2nd in the group, so running through the permutations...
Firstly, we should fancy it against ANY of the Group H teams in the last 16. So running past that one...
If the Swiss pip Brazil to the top of their group and Germany top theirs (Sweden would have to beat Mexico), Brazil and Germany would meet each other in the last 16 and go into a separate quarter.
If we top the group, we'd get the Swiss or the runners-up of Germany's group (Sweden or Mexico) in the quarters.
Come on Football Gods :D
-
I think we will piss this tinpot world cup.
-
Maybe it's time to stop the Rashford wankfest and get off Sterlings back? Both are young players with plenty of potential but Rashford hardly set the world on fire tonight and showed that he isn't the wonder boy that some think he is.

Southgate out.

I doubt anyone would have given a great account of themselves last night under the circumstances, to be fair. Ironically possibly Sterling, as the pressure would be off to an extent.
-
Indeed however Sterling would've been crucified by the press for that Miss

Nobody would be crucified over any miss in last night's borefest. Anybody who misses next week when it matters certainly will be.

I agree with Jimmy. If Sterling missed that chance last night it would've been back page news.

The back pages are on hold again....

Totally agree. ???

"Ian Rush says if I don't drink my milk I'll only be good enough to play for Scotland"
"Scotland ??!! Who are they ???"
-
The World Cup may not be coming home.....but football has come home...to the place that invented it.
The England team has once again reached the semi final of a world cup, a cup they won in 1966, a cup we regularly qualify for and reach the quarters or last 16 at the very least....... they have restored hope and pride to a nation........we were a professional 45 mins of football from reaching a final we had half a chance of winning....
......can't say anything like that about Scotland can we?

Not from Scotland or a Scotland supporter, but it's hardly comparing like for like is it? England has a population over ten times larger than Scotland. For countries with an established history of playing football, you would expect countries with bigger populations to more regularly appear in finals.

Iceland's population is seven times larger than Alty's. However, I reckon if we were allowed to pick a team from everyone who lived in Altrincham we'd beat them.
-
I'll repeat the last bit of what I said again.....
"you would expect countries with bigger populations to more regularly appear in finals.

Is that based on the fact that a lot of Premier League footballers have chosen the Altrincham area as their home? ;)

Exactly! Pretty handy squad I'd imagine, might even take on England! :D
