Altrincham FC First Team / Test Match Special
« on: July 30, 2009, 11:10:20 AM »
"Two people who will definitely be attending are captain Ricky Ponting and team manager Steve Bernard. 'I've been friends with Ricky and Steve for a number of years now and they have always taken a keen interest in Altrincham's fortunes. They have recently become shareholders as well, as I have donated 500 of my shares to each of them', said the Robins' Chairman who is going into his eighth season at the Moss Lane helm".

Find Me an Follow Me from Adelaide to Syd-(e)-ney we've got Ricky Ponting (etc)

Name me the former England opening bat who once played for Alty......

From the Muff fans 'Save Our Club' appeal website http://www.saveourclub.co.uk/website/monies.htm:-

Representatives of W.F.C Supporters Club, Terras Trust and W.F.C Youth met after the Mansfield game to discuss the future of the Save Our Club appeal. Due to uncertainties around the future ownership of the majority shareholding in the club it has been decided that clarification should be made regarding what should be done with any funds raised. Should the majority shareholding go to someone who is considered not to have the clubs best interests at heart, then a further decision will be made as to how the funds could be best used in any attempt to Save Our Club.

Will be interesting to see what Muff fans define what "the clubs best interests at heart" to be, might I suggest:-

"To operate the club within a sustainable budget and vigourously avoid making pronouncements about achieving a place in the Football League within x years to court popularity with nit-wit fans whose understanding of football is limited to watching Premiership TV coverage and so think that a board of directors is there to fund success out of their own pockets as opposed to being charged with the competent financial management of a limited company, irrespective as to how dodgy they are as long as they say they've got lots of cash".

any more suggestions anyone?

Altrincham FC First Team / The Robins aren't. but the Linnets are..

King's Lynn suffered a serious financial blow yesterday with the shock resignation of major investor Michael Chinn. Lynn chairman Ken Bobbins launched a public appeal for new backers to come forward in a bid to plug a growing deficit in the club's finances following Chinn's sudden exit and the loss of vital sponsorship revenue.

Altrincham FC First Team / Nuneaton Liquidated

At the risk of antagonising Lord Vasey of the Fens and our friends from the New Swill, I've started this thread to discuss the financial problems of one of our old rivals - indeed a team we knocked out of the play-offs only 3 years ago. The Conference are certainly taking no prisoners when it comes to taking the Administration route - as Boston are finding out as well. Do you think clubs will get the message given Halifax, Nuneaton and probably Boston will all be chucked out of the Conference come Saturday?

Altrincham FC First Team / Cambridge Lost....

Not that sad having read this from our old friend Mr Vessey:-

http://cambridgeunited.rivals.net/News/pgArticle.aspx?artid=13818_3582535&id=95

"Even with the top tier shut and the ground soon to be only half-full, it was an amazing sight for fans used to the visitations of Farsley Celtic and Altrincham". I know 42,000 at Wembley is a bit more than Alty took to the Abbey in January - but we're far from the worst supported side away from home. Seems Mr V has joined the queue having a go, still, see you again next season Christopher.

Altrincham FC First Team / Alty on Non-League Football Show
« on: May 13, 2008, 12:26:33 PM »
Just listened to Monday nights' BBC Non League Football Show, where Halifax's plight was discussed along with the implications for relegation / promotion down the Pyramid - starting with us.

One of the contributors was Stuart Hammond of the Non League Paper who amongst other pronouncements declared:-

(i)    "ask many fans and they'd prefer to see teams promoted (than re-instated)"
(ii)   "if you were to ask Graham Heathcote or Geoff Goodwin they'd rather go down and re-group"
(iii)  "Stalybridge or Southport would stand a better chance (than us)"

I think we can leave aside the opinions of this dim-wit who fails to address (or wishes to ignore) the points made on here as regards funding playing success by amassing large debts whilst having no ability to re-pay them. What is of concern is the repetition of his paper's story this Sunday, which although refuted by Grahame on here, Mr Hammond feels free to air on national radio albeit not directly quoting either Graham or Geoff.

As an Alty fan I'll believe our charman and manager over a hack anyday (sorry Connor). However, the fact that this viewpoint is being widely broadcast isn't  likely to make GH's job of recruting BSP standard players for next season any easier, never mind soothing our fears - particularly a few days before an open fans forum.

Can I ask that following the forum, where I'm sure the Board and GH will confirm we want to be in the BSP and compete positively, that the club issue a formal press statement confirming such (and send a copy to Mr Hammond!).

For info' here's the link - our bit is abour 30 mins in.

Altrincham FC First Team / Top 5 Alty Hardnuts?
« on: February 23, 2008, 01:41:35 AM »
1951-2 Team (See Official Site)

Moss Lane was a bit la-di-dah Gunner Graham in '52 -  a trainer called Masseur and 2 Polish players? Still, I bet Biffer Smith took no prisoners.

Was Biffer harder than these:-

1. John King - Ossie's Nightmare
2. Gerry Casey - slow, average in the air but seemed to know most NPL refs by their first name
3. Stan Allan - used to pick fights with the oppositions' best players and get them sent off
4. Graham Heathcote - similar to Stan apart from the getting their players sent off bit
5. Lennie Dickinson - chinned a Macc player at Edgeley park in a CSC semi

Quote from Lancaster's chairman on their 'new financial position' (BBC site):-

"We just pay the players' basic petrol expenses to get to the games, so we have gone from a club with (weekly) wages of £5,000 to £500."

In other words their budget at the start of this year was more or less the same as ours. This just underlines what a great job all at the club have done to get us to withoin touching distance of 2 successive seasons of Conference safety (I'm counting last year now given the AFC Wimbledon decision). It also suggests that relegation would see us an average spending club in the Conf North - so lets not let that happen eh??
