The most expensive Alty team ever?
« on: August 04, 2007, 08:49:47 PM »

Further to a convo myself, Foz, Flynny , the ROwleys and a few others had in the bar afterwards, what's the most expensive Alty side ever assembled, as in money paid for players?

Today we came up with

Matt Dickens, transferred for £250,000 from somewhere to Blackburn we think.

Paul WIlliams, one of the all time Alty wastes of space, apparentlt Stockport or Plymouth once played a quarter of a mil for this f***ing lummox.

Mark Ward, moved from Everton to City fot £1.2/1.5m

Gareth Whalley Crewe to Bradford £600,000

Any more ex Alty players who once commanded a fee?

Oh Paul Edwards left back in the late 80s went from Crewe to COventry I think for possibly as much as £400,000

Craney I spose for £150,000

Wonder if Nige Gleghorn or Kilcline ever had a fee paid.

Kevin Ellison must have clocked up a few pounds in transfer fees since he left us!

Former Player/Manager Laurie Brown - Arsenal to Spurs for £40,000 in 1964;

Alex Stepney - Chelsea to Manchester United for £55,000 in 1966 (then a world record fee for a goalkeeper);

Colin Alcide - Hull City to York City for £80,000 in 1999;

Len Cantello - West Bromwich Albion to Bolton for £350,000 in 1979;

Brian Kilcline - Oldham to Newcastle United for £250,000 in 1992;

Ian Tunnacliffe - Emley to AC Milan for £3.7 million in 1994.

Now, there is one of them that i don't believe.... surely Colin Alcide was not worth that much!!!!! ;)

Mark Ward, moved from Everton to City fot £1.2/1.5m

If my memory serves me correctly, Mark Ward moved to City from West Ham in a player swap deal which saw Ian Bishop and Trevor Morley move the other way.

Didn't Bishop & Morley start "moving the other way" some time prior to that transfer!?!?!? Also I think Roberto Baggio was a makeweight in Tunna's move to La Rossonieri!!!

John Rogers was valued at £50,000 by the Granada Kick off programme in a special feature on the player

Graham Bennett's  valuation was a closely guarded secret, but must have been approaching £2,000

Did Danny Adams or Paul Edwards (the winger in Bernard's time) ever command a fee?

On a slight sidetopic, I know Tunna gets some stick but for me Paul Williams was the biggest lummox I've ever seen play for Alty. I can't believe he was ever worth £250k. He was truly atrocious, not cos he was unarsed necessarily (altho he was that) but it's hard to explain, he was just sh*te. A truly awful player.

Would you agree?

p.s. Flynny, you have mail.

Ballers,

Paul Williams would be an automatic choice for inclusion in the all-time Altrincham FC Donkeys XI.
Simply atrocious.

Frankly, I am appalled that you would stoop so low as to mention the legendary Tunna in the same sentence as Williams.

Tunna notched five goals in 33 appearances for Alty.
Joe O'Neill has already played 45 games and only managed to score three more goals than the great man!

Jason Van Blerk once commanded a fee of £300,000 as well  :P

So waht have we come up with

Dickens / Dibble £250k

Colin Alcide £80k
Brian Kilcline £250k
Paul Edwards £350k (Crewe to Coventry 1990)

Len Cantello £350k
Mark Ward £1.2m
Nigel Gleghorn £175k (City to Birmingham 1992)
Gareth Whalley £600k

Ian Craney £150k
Paul Williams £250k
Kevin Ellison £100k (Chester to Hull 2005)

Some were past their prime when they played for us, some went onto better things but that little mobe at their highest value woyuld cost you £3,755,000.  :o
