Odd event in 1974...
« on: February 04, 2011, 02:15:31 PM »

... does anyone understand / remember / can anyone explain:

1974/75

Northern Premier League Cup 2nd Round: Gainsborough Trinity 0 Altrincham 1
Match ordered to be replayed as Gainsborough played ineligible player.

Replay: Gainsborough Trinity 2 Altrincham 0

What??

They played an ineligible player, so we got thrown out?
Why didn't the NPL just leave things as they were?

Mister Guru,

I'll have to delve into my archives in order to unearth the full story, so please bear with me.

However, there is a factual inaccuracy in your posting, as the original fixture ended in a 2-1 win for Gainsborough Trinity.

As far as I can remember, they didn't do 'kickings out' in those days but we were given another chance with a second game (and fluffed it)!

Makes more sense.

The Alty v Gainsbro FA Trophy (75-76) programme was my source.

In the same programme:

Les Rigby tries to justify why he let Graham Heathcote go to Vics

Len Pollitt refers to our last 2 performances as UNACCEPTABLE (loss at 3rd Division Halifax and at home to Vics in NWFL) and states SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE

That will be the manager, then

What pisses me off the most is that other clubs have since been thrown out of cup competitions for doing the same thing as Stalybridge.

We'd have met Chester and potentially also Man City in the cup that year if we'd got through.

Why did you have to say that?

Now I'll be haunted all night by terrifying visions of Martin Filson....

Furnival AND Wood ! Ye Gods, I'd forgotten just how much Rigby had to answer for ! Wood was undoubtedly the worst keeper we've ever had (and I'm not forgetting Frankish, Schofield, or Teflon). As for Furnival -  worse than McAliskey !

Les Rigby. Forced to resign by a pitchside protest by John Murray, The Flying Scotsman, Derek Wilshaw, Alan Gorrill and Mrs Gorrill at Boston. "Resign Rigby Resign" shouted the holligans whilst waving umbrellas. Class javascript:void(0);
