Title: Do we still have a groundsman?
Post by: Alty Razor Squad on January 30, 2016, 10:35:17 AM
The weather hasn't been too bad this week and it seems a very odd postponement if we've had a groundsman looking after the pitch.

No, Grahame Rowley sacked him to keep the money in his back pocket. Ongoing negotiations to extend the allotment next year and let them grow potatoes on the pitch.

Neil Brown who has worked very hard all week but, like many others was defeated by the weather.

If people keep posting stupid comments however we may not have one

On this occasion ATS is bang on right. Well said.
There is nothing more deflating than trying your best, not achieving your goal due to unforeseen circumstances and then being openly criticised. This especially applies to those that volunteer, of which we have many at this club and without them we would have had the same fate as Vics and Runcorn a long time ago.

It's a thankless task having to look after and maintain a pitch as when you have worked hard getting the pitch ready for a game, both teams then warm up and mess it up. Then before kick off it gets sorted again. Half time more of the same. Full time and it's the same again. Neil does a really good job on our pitch and I am sure if there were any volunteers who instead of criticising .............................. Silly me to even think that could happen.

There is a stream at the back of the ground that runs at a lower level that pitch level, so this isn't a matter of pitch preparation or the high water table but inadequate drainage.

All the drains were renewed a few years ago

I wasn't having a dig at Neil Brown in the slightest,it was a genuine question as to whether we still had a groundsman.

It amazes me that without a groundsman the grass doesnt seem to grow, it always looks freshly cut - WEIRD!!!

Can I ask why we would've suffered the same fate as vics and Runcorn without the volunteers we have?

Both of them had plenty.

If he didn't want to be called a dick head he shouldn't have tried to be a smart arse. Being a smart arse is ok though because his post his still there.

Being a smart arse is permitted, abusing one another isn't.

It's no big deal, his post is there to be replied to as is the original question.

Why is this not also removed.

I agree. Quoting things like this to keep them floating around is definitely not the right thing to do Mr VofD!
