Altrincham FC pay tribute to 19-year-old fan who died suddenly
5:29pm Monday 27th April 2009

TRIBUTES have been paid to devoted Altrincham fan James Black, following his sudden death last week at the age of 19.

James, who lived in Timperley and worked at the Tesco superstore less than half-a-mile away from Alty's ground, was a virtual ever-present at matches, fundraising events and social functions at Moss Lane.

He was a former Alty ball boy and prided himself on following the Robins round the country, as well as being an enthusiastic contributor to any football debate in the Noel White Suite before and after every home game.

Speaking on behalf of the club, Alty vice-chairman Grahame Rowley said: “James was one of those larger-than-life characters who everyone knew. He was an imposing presence physically and he usually had a view on any given subject.

“He could be quite outspoken, but if ever he felt he might have overstepped the mark or caused offence, he'd be the first to come over and apologise. That was one of his many endearing qualities.

“Another was his real love and passion for Altrincham. That shone through in everything he said and did. He did a lot of work round the place and often helped out in the snack bars. He would happily do that for the benefit of the club, and he was a true Alty fan who will be sorely missed by a lot of people.

“It is an absolute tragedy losing someone like James at such a young age, and I still can't quite believe that, after seeing him only the previous week, he has gone. Everyone connected with the club sends their heartfelt sympathy and condolences to James' family.”

Brian Flynn, chairman of the Altrincham Supporters Club, added: “James was very passionate about Altrincham and loved to be involved in helping in any way he could. He will be remembered as a big guy with a very caring demeanour who tried to live his life to the fullest.”

The funeral is at Christ Church, Thorley Lane, Timperley at 10.30am on Friday, and it is a measure of James' outlook on life that his family sent out a few words of advice about suitable dress code.

The service is open to all, and the message said: “Think of James when choosing what to wear - he was always a very cheerful person with a passion for football.”
