New Signing - See Main Site
« on: July 28, 2008, 02:16:41 PM »

Altrincham FC have signed centre-back Mark McGregor, who made his debut on Saturday at Stalybridge. Mark played for Port Vale last season and has more than 400 League appearances to his credit. It was for his first club, Wrexham, that he made the majority of those appearances (244), between 1995 and 2001. He then went on a free transfer in 2001 to Turf Moor but after 54 games for Burnley (2001-04), he moved to Blackpool (59 games between 2004 and 2006). Next, he played 66 times for Port Vale (2006-08). He joins Altrincham after a trial at Mansfield Town earlier this month.
Mark was born at Chester on February 16, 1977.

How did he do on Saturday? Evidently ok as we won 3-0 but it was against a BSN side. Why didnt he get the gig at Mansfield, the only worry.

On the outlook this seems to me like another fantastic signing. A 31 yr old centre back with 400 league appearances under his belt, a lot of them higher than league 2. It seems too good to be true, again well done to the club for bringing such a quality name.

Even if this is another player who is looking to go part time to boost the coffers whilst setting up a career outside of playing football, we have to be proud that so many decent players are choosing to do it with us! I think this really shows how serious we are about being a force this season. Im trying desperately not to dream of mid-table obscurity but I cant help it!!!

The dizzy heights of 16th await!

Perhaps it is down to their internal chaos at the time?

I think we as fans sort of threw down the gauntlet at the end of last season, and to their credit the board and management have picked it up and done a fine job in recruiting some good players who, on the face of it, will be a massive improvement on last season. Given that there are also loan players to come during the season it's looking very exciting for us indeed!

I can't wait for Woking now, bring it on!

COME ON ALTY!

Not his finest feedback.

But like it said, he's dropped 2 divisions, and 4 Vale fans might not be the majority opinion.

I thought he looked pretty good on Saturday. Didn't give the ball away much and his distribution was good (Contrary to the Vale fans on the thread above!). Stalybridge didn't have the highest level of strikers and he'll come up against better in the BSP, but dealt with Hall (ex Oldham) pretty well once Young went off..

This is another good addition to the squad, I think we've probably reached our optimum level (19 players) but would love to see another full back come in to push Lane and Doughty, particularly after reading that York will run with 21 players this year (I suspect most full-time clubs will have 20+ players?!)

Still think we're a bit light on the defensive front.. Take it no deal could be done with Williams?? (Anybody know?)

Well, after spending the first half foolishly thinking he wasn't tall enough to be a centre half, i have to say i was proved totally wrong! He seemed to win pretty much every header in the second half and I think it was him who slid across to block an almost certain goal. I think he'll be a great signing, especially with the experience he's gained in the football league.

I thought he did a good job on Saturday, but they were poor.
Might find out if he is good enough in the next two games.

I'm assuming that's it now - any more will need to be loan players I suspect.
Battersby will be the third full back won't he?
I've got to say, the squad as it stands now has exceeded any expectations I might have had at the end of last season.
Can't wait for the team to do it out on the pitch next season (which I'm sure they will) as we march triumphantly out of the bottom six (but perhaps only just!  ::))

Good news I think, he played well on Saturday, like he'd been a part of the team for a while already.

Yeah he was very vocal, organising the defence etc.

I liked the look of McGregor on Saturday although it was only against a poor Stalybridge side. Won everything he went for and looked to be a great organiser, constantly talking to the rest of the back four.

Not so sure we need loan players to be honest.

A solid squad of 19 is more than we have had in recent seasons, the good thing is all of the 19 could happily play first team football where as prior years we had some fringe players who we knew didnt really come up to standard.

Looking forward to the season, I just hope they all deliver now.

I totally agree.
I'm feeling very confident this season but, as I think 'Ballers' said in other words elsewhere on here, Im so confident I'm getting nervous.  ;)
