So, how many of these do you remember then....?
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:48:44 PM »

Here's Alty's team on the occasion of Newport County's only previous visit to Moss Lane on Saturday, 15th October 1988:

1. Jeff Wealands
2. Ian Johnson
3. Barry Knowles
4. Paul Cuddy
5. Mike Farrelly
6. Nicky Daws
7. Andy Kilner
8. Chris Byrne
9. Gary Stewart
10. John Timmons
11. Kevan Hawkins

Subs:

12. Joey Dunn
14. Andy Green (not the 1994/95 version!)

For the record, Alty won 1-0 via a Gary Stewart goal in front of an attendance of 1,359.

The same scoreline on Saturday afternoon would do rather nicely....

John Timmons, the postman from Hyde, was my hero!!
Remember him scoring a Zidane style volley in front of the Golf Road once.

That was one of my first ever alty games, I think i'd come a couple of weeks/months before and seen us draw 0-0 with Barrow in the Trophy or something and then get beat in the league by Chorley 2-1. Maybe its my nostalgic mind playing tricks but i seem to remember Chorley brought loads with them. Dont think Newport did though.

Was Stewarts goal a penalty? Again might be my fragile mind playing tricks.

OGC,

That Barrow FA Trophy Quarter-Final tie was played on Saturday, 5th March 1988.

We lost 2-1 against Chorley at Moss Lane on Tuesday, 23rd August 1988 in front of a gate of 1,514.

Jeff Johnson was the Alty manager in both of those fixtures.

I don't think that Gary Stewart's goal versus Newport County came from a penalty.....but Mister Flynn should be able to clarify this in due course.

In a 2-0 win against Barnet, IIRC.

CHRIS BYRNE local lad played in the Navi team. Other players of that era at the Navi were STEVE ROBERTS, CHRIS & DANNY ADAMS, STUART LEICESTER, managed by BILLY BUTT (Nicky Butt's Uncle)

Yes - a 70th minute penalty awarded for a foul by Max Thompson on John Timmons.

I stand corrected.

I suspect that I just thought that Gary Stewart never scored penalties after recalling his woeful spot kick against Halifax Town in that televised FA Cup tie at Moss Lane...!

Mister Heslop,

Wasn't Stuart Leicester related to the family who used to run The Gardeners Arms pub on Deansgate Lane?

Didn't he play for Stalybridge against us at Moss Lane in January 1992 when they knocked us out of the FA Trophy (during those dark days of Stan Allan as Alty's manager)?

Timmo was a great player - he lit up the 86-87 season during John Williams' brief tenure. He scored some fantastic goals including an acrobatic volley away at Nuneaton towards the end of the season (I think). He did his hamstring later in the same game and was out for some time and was never quite as sharp again when he came back.

He was magnificent. During that spell when he was fully fit and firing on all cylinders, he was as good as any Alty striker I've ever seen.

I remember him scoring a superb chip to cap a big win under Tommy Docherty (one of few..) and the look on the Doc's face as he turned to the main stand seemed to say "what's someone that good doing at this level?"

Couldn't agree more - just a shame he's perhaps remembered more for his later seasons playing in a poorer team and not being as sharp.
