Altrincham FC First Team / So Near Yet So Far Away ...
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:46:00 AM »
.. a fantastic late run from Mark Embury and Andy Mein's 'Tom Marshall Fan Club' was not quite good enough to pinch top spot in the final round of the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition.

They picked up a magnificent 19 points in the final round of matches courtesy of 4 all correct score predictions, but it wasn't quite enough to dislodge James Hill's 'Rainmans Mugging Devils' who hung on to win by 2 points.

Not only does James win the cash for first place but more importantly gains valuable bragging rights over his father, Mike, whose team 'Rainman's Mugging Foxes' finished well down the batting order in 16th place.

Colin Mitchell's 'Team PSG Womble' slipped from 2nd to 3rd in the final week to finish one point behind the Tom Marshall Fan Club.

Congratulations to all three teams who pick up the prize money and a big thank you to all who took part.

Hopefully we will be able to run another prediction competition in the not to distant future.

The final table looks like this

1   Rainman's Mugging Devils   68
2   Tom Marshall Fan Club   66
3   Team PSG Womble      65
4   Hardly Athletic              63
T5   Parkhill Rangers              62

This is it,  who is going to edge it in the final furlong ?

Chelsea and Arsenal already have the comfort of having already qualified for the knock out stages as they take on Sporting Lisbon and Galatasary respectively. 16 of our contestants have gone for a Chelsea win, whilst ten have predicted a draw for the Gunners.

It's a must win game at Anfield for Brendon Rodgers's men against Basel. All but two of our teams have gone for a win for Liverpool, with one 1-2 away win and one 3-3 draw being the only dissenters. A 2-1 home win is the most favoured score line with 7 predictions  followed by four predictions for  a 2-0 win.

Manchester City travel to AS Roma on Wednesday seeking a win and hope Bayern Munich do them a favour by beating CSKA Moscow.  10 out of 18 have gone
for a City win with 7 predicting a draw. Bayern are favourites to help City out by beating Moscow with 16 of you going for a win for the Germans.

A goal feast is expected at the Bernabeau where Real Madrid take on PFC Ludogorets. No less than eight teams have gone for 4-0 home win with a further four predicting a 5-0 win.  The most ambitious score line predictions are a 6-2 win for Real and a 4-3 win for Lodogorets !

The final positions could be determined by the remaining Juventus v Atletico Madrid and Barcelona v PSG fixtures where the predictions are more diverse.

Only eight of our punters have gone for a Juventus home win with 5 plumping for a draw and the remainder an away win.

Eleven of our teams have gone for a Barcelona win at the Nou Camp with four draws.

So who will it be ?

Altrincham FC First Team / Did You Have City to Draw 2-2 ?
« on: November 27, 2014, 01:07:56 PM »
Manchester City's dramatic last gasp win over Bayern Munich to keep their slim hopes of making the knockout rounds of the champions League saw no less than six 2-2 score predictions turn from potential four pointers to just 1 point in the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition and produced the second lowest points tally with just 12 points collected by our 18 teams.

Similarly, Chelsea's 5-0 win in Germany over FC Schalke produced the lowest points tally with just 9 points for our contestants.

Biggest points scorer in Matchday 5 was the Apoel v Barcelona fixture with 2 all correct score predictions and everyone else picking up 2 points each for correctly predicting Barcelona to win and the home side to remain goalless.

Top scorer was Alan Ford's West Vale Wanderers who picked up a total of 14 points courtesy of two all correct score predictions of the Arsenal and Real Madrid results. Alan's team move from tied 8th to 5th position just 5 points behind our leaders.

As a result Matchday 5 of the TASC Champions League Prediction competition saw the top two teams swap positions with Rainman's Mugging Devils taking over top spot from Team PSG Womble with just one set of games to go.

It's all to play for on December 9th and 10th in the final round of matches with just 5 points separating the top 5 teams.

The fill table is as follows

1   Rainman's Mugging Devils   56
2   Team PSG Womble      54
3   Hardly Athletic              53
4   United On The Up      52
5   West Vale Wanderers      51
6   Parkhill Rangers              48
T7   Tom Marshall Fan Club   47
T7   The Mighty Robins      47
9   Malchester United      45
10   Where's Man U              44
T11   Shortdean United      43
T11   Peter Foster              43
T13   George's Megamen      42
T13   Female Flagger              42
T13   No Hopers                      42
T13   Rainman's Mugging Foxes   42

Altrincham FC First Team / Four Down, Two To Go ...
« on: November 24, 2014, 01:19:31 PM »
.. In The TASC Champions League Prediction Competition.

It's make or break time for Manchester City as they take on defending Champions Bayern Munich at the Etihad stadium on Tuesday evening.

11 out of our 18 entrants reckon on a draw, with 6 plumping for a 2-2 score line which will not be enough for City to progress to the knockout stages. Only two of you reckon City will win.

Not surprisingly 18 out of 18 are predicting Barcelona to beat Apoel away in Group F with only two predicting that the home team will score.

In the same group PSG take on Ajax in Paris with 6 predicting a 2-1 win for the home team, whilst 2 each of you go for a draw and an away win .

Premier League leaders Chelsea travel to Germany to take on Schalke, with a 1-1 draw being the most popular score forecast with 8, closely followed by 6 people predicting a 2-1 win for Chelsea.

The following evening sees the struggling scousers travel to PFC Ludogrets. With all the predictions being made before the first ball was kicked, 15 of our entrants went for a Liverpool away win. a 2-1 win being the most favoured outcome with 7 and a further 5 predicting a 2-0 win.

In the same group as Liverpool, Real Madrid visit Switzerland to take on FC Basel as clear favourites with only one person predicting a home win and two a draw.

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's disappointing home defeat to Manchester United when they take on Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium. 8 people have gone for a draw, 1 for an away win, with a 2-1 home win the most popular prediction with 6.

Finally also in Arsenal's group, RSC Anderlecht entertain Galatasary with 12 people going for a draw, and 3 each for a home and away win.

It's all getting close at the top of our leader board, let the battle continue on Tuesday evening.

A full update will follow after Wednesday's results.

Given the report and photograph on the main site of the new 'terracing' in front of the Community Sports Hall it looks as if anyone wishing to return to that side of the ground tomorrow will have to get down there early to reserve their position !

I just hope the paint has dried on the crush (?) barrier

Cosy !!

Altrincham FC First Team / So How Was It For You ?
« on: November 11, 2014, 12:03:42 PM »
Matchday 4 in the TASC Champion's League last week saw just one person picking up a solitary point from the Manchester City v CSKA Moscow fixture.

Moscow's surprise at the Etihad victory flummoxed all our entrants with just our youngest entrant, George's Megamen picking up a point by predicting that CSKA Moscow would score twice.

In the other matches played last week, Bayern Munich's 2-0 win over Roma saw the biggest points haul with 35 points being garnered including 3 correct score predictions.

Barcelona's 2-0 win in Amsterdam was also correctly predicted by three entrants.

In total there were only 7 all correct score predictions the other correct prediction being Bayer Leverkusen's 2-1 win away to Zenit St Petersburg.

Biggest movers are Colin Mitchell's, Team PSG Womble who move to the top of the table, and West Vale Wanderers who move from being tied 13th to tied 8th by collecting 11 points each.

Former leaders, Hardly Athletic drop to tied 3rd place having picked up just 6 points.

The full table is as follows

1   Team PSG Womble      45
2   Rainman's Mugging Devils   44
T3   Hardly Athletic              42
T3   United On The Up      42
5   Tom Marshall Fan Club   40
6   Parkhill Rangers              39
7   Malchester United      38
T8   The Mighty Robins      37
T8   West Vale Wanderers      37
10   Shortdean United      36
11   George's Megamen      35
T12   Where's Man U              34
T12   Female Flagger              34
T14   No Hopers                      32
T14   Rainman's Mugging Foxes   32
T14   Peter Foster              32
17   Snowballers Albion      27
18   Martha's Minnions      23

With yet another international break this week the next round of matches takes place 25th and 26th November.

23
Both sides will be looking to avenge a home defeat at the hands of their opponents tonight and also put behind them last Saturday's abysmal performance to gain some credibility with their long suffering supporters !

Yes folks, whilst Altrincham travel to the depths of deepest Lincolnshire tonight, there's the small matter of the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition to contemplate with both Liverpool and Arsenal in action tonight and Manchester City and Chelsea tomorrow evening.

Liverpool have the unenviable task of taking on Real Madrid at the Bernabeau to try and avenge the 3-0 mauling they took from the same opposition two weeks ago at Anfield. Not surprisingly no one has been bold enough to give the scousers a hope with 17 of our 18 entrants going for a home win for Real. Only one brave soul has gone for a 2-2 draw.

Arsenal have more support to beat RSC Anderlecht at home with 5 predictions each for 3-1 and 2-0 out of a total of 14 home win predictions.

In the other two matches tonight, Juventus take on Olympiacos with 13 predictions for a home win, and Zenit St Petersburg entertain Bayer Leverkusen. with 10 predictions for a home win.

Wednesday evening sees Manchester City fighting for Champions League survival with a 'must win' home match against CSKA Moscow. Despite a disappointing 2-2 draw two weeks ago in Russia, 17 out of 18 have gone for a City win with 7 predicting a 3-1 win and a further 5 a 3-0 win.  Apparently City have introduced a BOGOF offer for Wednesday's fixture in an attempt to fill the Etihad. Now there's a big club for you !

If they fail to win tomorrow it could be BOGOF to the Europa League with two matches still to play ?

Meanwhile Chelsea are expected to go marching on away at NK Maribor. It's a full house of away win predictions for Mourhinio and his boys, the most popular prediction being 2-0 win with 7 correct score predictions.

Defending Champions Bayern Munich having scored 7 against Roma, have home advantage this time round in the return fixture. 5-1 is the largest victory prediction for the Germans with one person predicting for 4-2 Roma win.

Finally FC Barcelona travel to Amsterdam to face Ajax. None of our entrants have gone for a home win, with 5 plumping for a draw, and the rest an away win for Messi & Co.

So do you watch the Champions League on TV or listen to Radio Robins from Lincoln ?

A full update of the Champions League will follow early next week when I get back from golfing in Tenerife, late on Sunday evening, by which time hopefully Altrincham will have picked up three points at Lincoln and be in the draw for the FA Cup second round.

We live in hope !!

Altrincham FC First Team / Better Late Than Never
« on: October 27, 2014, 09:06:36 PM »
So with Matchday 3 of the Champions League being overshadowed by Altrincham's the FA Cup exploits it's update time following last week's matches in the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition.

Not surprisingly no one correctly predicted that Bayern Munich would put 7 past Roma in their own backyard.

Arsenal's 2-1 win away at Anderlecht was the most predicted correct result with 7 correct score predictions closely followed by Barcelona's 3-1 home win over Ajax with 5 correct score predictions.

Biggest mover was Rainman's Mugging Devils who picked up a massive 19 points helped by 3 correct score predictions to move into joint second place, just 1 point behind Hardly Athletic.

The full table is as follows

1   Hardly Athletic              36
T2   United On The Up      35
T2   Rainman's Mugging Devils   35
4   Team PSG Womble      34
5   Parkhill Rangers              32
6   Malchester United      31
7   Tom Marshall Fan Club   30
T8   George's Megamen      28
T8   Shortdean United      28
T8   Where's Man U              28
T8   The Mighty Robins      28
T11   Female Flagger              27
T11   No Hopers                      27
T13   Rainman's Mugging Foxes   26
T13   Peter Foster              26
T13   West Vale Wanderers      26
17   Martha's Minnions      21
18   Snowballers Albion      17

The next round of matches takes place next week with the reverse fixtures from Matchday 3 taking place.

Will Real Madrid outclass Liverpool at the Bernabaeu as they did at Anfield last week (without Gareth Bale)?

Can Bayern Munich improve on their 7 goals last time out at home to Roma ?

Can Manchester City keep their fading hopes of further advancement in the competition with a first win in the group stages ?

A full preview of the predictions will follow early next week ahead of the matches on the 4th & 5th of November.

Altrincham FC First Team / Eyes Down Look In ..

After last week's international break for Euro 2016 qualifiers, Champions League action returns this week with Matchday 3 in the TASC Champion's League Prediction Competition.

Highlight of Matchday 3 has to be at Anfield where Liverpool take on the mighty Real Madrid (minus Gareth Bale).  Only one person gives Liverpool a chance with a 2-1 home win whilst 11 entrants have gone for an away win. A 2-2 draw is the most favoured score line with 5 predictions.

Manchester City travel to CSKA Sofia as firm favourites with our predictors with 14 of you going for an away win and the remainder plumping for a draw. A 2-1 City win is the favoured outcome with 7 predictions.

Chelsea are even bigger favourites to beat NK Maribor at The Bridge with all our entrants predicting a home win.. 8 people have gone for a 3-0 victory and a further 4 for a 4-0 winning margin.

Arsenal take a short trip across the Channel to Belgium to take on RSC Anderlecht with an away win being the favoured result with 11 predictions and a 2-1 win for the Gunners the most favoured score line with 6.

In the other matches forming part of the prediction competition, Bayern Munich have 10 predictions for an away win against Roma, whilst their fellow Bundesliga colleagues, Borussia Dortmund have 11 predictions for an away win against Galatasary.

Barcelona have 16 of our teams predicting a home win. 2-0 and 3-1 are the favoured score predictions with 6 each.

AS Monaco and Benfica are the biggest favourites in all the selected matches to finish all square with 12 draw predictions of which 8 people go for 1-1.

A reminder of the current table is as follows

1   Hardly Athletic              28
T2   United On The Up      24
T2   Tom Marshall Fan Club   24
4   George's Megamen      20
T5   Malchester United      19
T5   Rainman's Mugging Foxes   19
T7   Female Flagger              18
T7   Parkhill Rangers              18
T9   Shortdean United      17
T9   Where's Man U              17
T9   Peter Foster              17
T9   Team PSG Womble      17
T13   No Hopers                      16
T13   Rainman's Mugging Devils   16
15   The Mighty Robins      15
16   West Vale Wanderers      13
17   Snowballers Albion      12
18   Martha's Minnions      12

An updated table will be published after the second day of fixtures on Wednesday evening.

26
So Arsenal score 4, Liverpool go down 1-0 in Basle and Real Madrid scrape it 2-1 against PFC Lodogorets.

Not surprisingly, none of our entrants correctly predicted Arsenal's demolition of Galatasary, but Zenit St Petersburg's 0-0 draw with Monaco saw four correct predictions.

Congratulations to The Tom Marshall Fan Club for being the only team correctly predicting the Basel's 1-0 win over Liverpool and Martha's Minnions who was the only team to correctly predict Real Madrid's 2-1 win in Bulgaria.

So after all the Matchday 2 results, Hardly Athletic's two correct predictions takes them to the top of the table with the leader board is now being strung out as follows.

1   Hardly Athletic              28
T2   United On The Up      24
T2   Tom Marshall Fan Club   24
4   George's Megamen      20
T5   Malchester United      19
T5   Rainman's Mugging Foxes   19
T7   Female Flagger              18
T7   Parkhill Rangers              18
T9   Shortdean United      17
T9   Where's Man U ?              17
T9   Peter Foster              17
T9   Team PSG Womble      17
T13   No Hopers                      16
T13   Rainman's Mugging Devils   16
15   The Mighty Robins      15
16   West Vale Wanderers      13
17   Snowballers Albion      12
18   Martha's Minnions      12

The next round of matches take place on 21st & 22nd October when Manchester City visit Moscow, Chelsea appear to have a relatively easy fixture at home to Maribor, Arsenal visit Anderlecht whilst Liverpool take on the might of Real Madrid at Anfield.

A preview of the next round of predictions will be published ahead of Matchday 3 in three weeks time

27
... the second round of matches in the TASC Champions League prediction were kicking off around Europe.

In the first four matches to be played on Matchday 2 no one correctly predicted Manchester City's 1-1 draw at home to Roma.

Whilst 13 out of 17 went for a Bayern Munich win in Moscow, no one correctly predicted the 0-1 score line.

Congratulations to Colin Mitchell whose was the only person to correctly predicted the 3-2 win for PSG over Barcelona.

Chelsea's 1-0 away win in Portugal was correctly predicted by just two entrants.

Tonight's round see four more matches with FC Basel taking on Liverpool, and PFC Ludogorets against Real Madrid in Group B.

10 people have gone for a draw for Liverpool with the most bold prediction being a 5-4 victory for the scousers !

We have a full house of predictions for Real Madrid to win away, with 3-0 being the most popular prediction with 10.

The other two matches see Zenit St Petersburg v Monaco and Arsenal v Galatasary.

The predictions for the Zenit v Monaco are well spread with four people each going for 0-0, 2-0 and 2-1 . Only three have gone for an away win.

It another full house for Arsenal to beat Galatasary at the Emirates.

Six go for 2-0, and five for 2-1. Two entrants expect a goal fest with a 5-1 and 5-0 win ?

A fully updated table will be posted after tonight's results.

.. when Boateng's late goal  sunk Manchester City to save a few blushes for the 13 entrants in the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition who predicted a Bayern win.

The first round of matches in the TASC Champions League Prediction competition were completed last night (Wednesday)

After the first 4 of the 8 Matchday 1 fixtures played on the Tuesday evening only 1 person correctly predicted the 2-1 Liverpool result despite 17 out of 18 going for a Liverpool win.

No one correctly predicted Real Madrid's 5-1 demolition of Basel despite 17 out 18 going for a Real victory.

Similarly no one correctly predicted Dortmund's 2-0 win over Arsenal.

The largest number of correct predictions was the 1-1 draw between Galatasary and RSC Anderlecht with 5 people picking up a maximum 4 points.

The Tom Marshall Fan Club took an early lead with 10 points followed by Hardly Athletic on 9 points and United On The Up with 8 points.

The second night of matches saw City and Chelsea joining the action along with Barcelona.

Surprisingly not one entrant predicted an all correct score in the matches played on the Wednesday evening.

Whilst all 18 predicted a Barcelona victory over Apoel no one predicted the 1-0 score line.

Only 1 person correctly predicted Chelsea to draw at home but unfortunately they went for a 2-2 score line.

Athletico Bilbao's 0-0 draw with Shaktor Donetsk again failed to deliver a fully correct score prediction although 6 people went for a score draw.

So after the first round of matches, its the Tom Marshall Fan Club who lead the way with 14 points with three teams tied in second place with 12 points and a further four teams with 10 points each.

The second round of matches take place on 30 Sept / 1 Oct with Manchester City at home to high scoring Roma, Barcelona at PSG, Arsenal at home to Galatasary, and Chelsea and Liverpool away at Sporting Lisbon and FC Basel respectively.

The full leader board is as follows:

To date we have 18 entries for the TASC Champions League Prediction Competition.

There is still time to enter.

Late entries will be accepted, but any matches already played will be null and void for those late entries.

The first 8 selected Matchday 1 matches have thrown up some interesting stats.

Only one person has gone for Liverpool to draw at home to PFC Ludogrets with everyone else predicting a Liverpool win. 3-0 in the most popular score line with 7

Similarly the same 17 people have predicted a home win for Real Madrid against Basel.

Only 4 people expect Arsenal to win away at Borussia Dortmund with 7 of you going for a 1-1 draw.

Galatasary are favourites for a home win (12) over RSC Anderlecht.

Only one brave sole has predicted that Manchester City will open their Champions League programme with a win in Munich with 4 predicting a draw.

It's a full house for Barcelona to beat Apoel at the Nou Camp with 9 entrants expecting Barcelona to score at least 4 goals.

Chelsea are strongly fancied to beat Schalke at Stamford Bridge with 17 win predictions and 1 draw. (3-1 is the most likely outcome with 5)

and finally, Athletico Bilbao take on Shaktor Donetsk with the homew side again expected to win (11) and only one person going for an away win.

The first table will be published at the end of the week after the matches that take place on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

As mentioned above we will accept late entries and forms are available from the club or by e mailing myself on paulpsalt@hotmail.co.uk

The Altrincham Supporters Club (TASC) Goal Rush scheme which was introduced three seasons ago has proved to be a popular and important fund raiser for the club.

The scheme is simple, anyone can sponsor the mighty Robins any amount they wish in multiples of 25p per goal for each goal they score throughout the 2014-15 season in all competitive Conference Premier League and play off matches, FA Cup, FA Trophy and Cheshire Senior Cup matches.

For example – If Altrincham score a total of 75 goals in the 2014/15 season for each 25p sponsored goal you would be paying £18.75 for the whole season.

For every 10th goal scored, each sponsor will be entered into a free draw based on one entry for each 25p sponsored, i.e. If you agree to donate 50p per goal, you receive 2 entries, £2.00 per goal receives 8 entries etc.

The lucky winner of each draw for every 10th goal will have the choice of one of three prizes. These are (1) TWO FREE TICKETS for a forthcoming home league game, (2) FREE AWAY TRAVEL for one person to any away game on the TASC organised coach or (3) A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH of the winner with their favourite Altrincham player

In addition there will be still be the end of the season draw for TWO PRIZES of a signed shirt and matchball.

Should the total amounts pledged exceed £30.00 and Altrincham score 100 goals in the 2014-15 season then the Chairman has again agreed to provide a free season ticket for the 2015-16 season in addition for the end of season draw.

Forms are available from the TASC desk in the Noel White Suite on all match days.

Alternatively if you can leave me your e mail address by way of a personal message on the forum I will happily forward a form to you.
