Alty Trivia Question (inspired by events at Abbey Hey)
« on: July 13, 2008, 11:41:09 PM »

Following Chris Senior's five goal tally yesterday afternoon, I was wondering who the last Alty player was to score five goals in a game?

I recall Keith Russell scoring four against Bamber Bridge at Moss Lane a few years ago and even Barry Whitbread rattling in all four goals in a 5-4 defeat at Runcorn....but I'm struggling to think of anyone who has hit the net five times in the same game in the not-too-distant past.

Or do we need to go back to the halcyon days of the prolific Swindells?

Didn't he come on at Half Time & score a couple of goals in the first few minutes of the second half??

I thought that Lee Poland got four that night.

I think that John Rogers got five goals in a six goal mauling of Worcester City in the early eighties.

John Rogers scored 5 in a 6-3 victory over Worcester at Moss Lane in 1981-82 (as I now see Mr Flynn has already noted) - March 82 I think it was - we beat Yeovil 7-1 a couple of weeks later with Whitbread (who did score 4 at canal Street in our 5-4 defeat, 4-1 up with 15 minutes to go) coming on as a late sub after ages out injured and scoring with his first touch.

I've got a feeling Finney scored 5 or 6 at Woodley, Think we won 8-1.

I remember Gavin Price scoring,  I think,  6 in a reserve game as a trialist, we signed him after that.

Good to see that Father Flynn is already looking good in pre-season training for yet another campaign of Alty trivia questions....

That Alty v Worcester City game took place on 5th April 1982.

The printers of the Robins Review went kaput midway through that season, so statistics for the latter stages are not that easy to locate (and we had a massive fixture backlog that season).

I was only a few days out: March 82 I said, first week in April 82 it was - but I can't remember stuff that happened yesterday!

Those "emergency programmes" : a single folded sheet of A4 printed front and back did have one advantage over those stupid massive programmes with a 20 page insert about life in the football league - they always gave the crowds, which had not generally been the case up to that point

That 1981/82 season programme was pretty awful, especially as other clubs were using the same format.

The Kettering v Altrincham programme from 19th September 1981 contains exactly the same supplement as the one that appeared in the Altrincham v Scarborough programme on 21st September 1981, so you could read that fascinating profile of Leighton James all over again.....

What happened to him, was he released ? Seem to remember he wasn't that bad along with an awesome goal at Lancaster followed by an argument with Thornley over a penalty kick.

I'm pretty sure that Daws was one of the players who got a hat-trick that day along with McKenna. Didn't Brady get a hat-trick in the 6-2(?)destruction of Boston the following Tuesday?

As if we scored 15 goals in two matches!

As per the notes on my copy of the Robins Review from that marvellous afternoon:

Altrincham...9

McKenna 6, 12, 62
Daws 9, 19, 81
Shaw 17, 88
Showler 40

Merthyr Tydfil...2

Webley 10, 61

H-T: 6-1.

Attendance: 1,083.

This also proved to be Martin Baker's final game for Alty, as he tried to relaunch his playing career after suffering a broken leg.

As I've mentioned on here before, I genuinely came away from that match disappointed that we had not reached double figures!
Never satisfied, eh?
