It's Summer; the AGM is over, new signing targets are a closely guarded secret and it's all gone quiet at Macc......hence the forum is very quiet at the moment. However seeing Paul Pogba playing for France last week got me thinking..........are there any other World Cup squad members who have played at Moss Lane ?..........Sertori and Thornley don't count

This world cup, or any world cup?
-
Joe Hart and Daniel Sturridge both played for City in a friendly at ML a few years ago.
-
Paul McGrath played for a Man Utd XI in a benefit / testimonial type game around 1987.
I'm pretty sure he scored too - a header at the Golf Road IIRC. I'm sure one of the historians here will be able to verify.
-
Dan Petrescu
Paul Scholes
Stuart Pearce
Jason McAteer

Frank Sinclair! ::) Sure he turned out for Jamaica in the 90s.
-
I hesitate to suggest the appallling Jason Van Blerk......though his 33 caps for the Socceroos included a number of World Cup Qualifiers, he never played in the Finals.

Fowler and Mcmanaman

Tommy Banks - a big bull of a left back played for England in 1958. He was in the Alty team when I was mascot

Does before they played in the World Cup count? We had David Beckham in a friendly.
Also Paul Scholes turned out for United reserves.
Did Mark Fish ever play in a World Cup for South Africa?
-
Ian Wright
OOPPPSSSS....
He missed out on 1998 with Injury but played in most of the qualifiers...
Swap Wright for Nani, I am sure he played for United reserves at some point
-
Kuzak came to ML in Man u XI a couple of seasons ago, he was in the 2006 squad, not sure if he got a game though.

The one and only Chris Senior?
-
Chris Waddle played at Moss Lane for Worksop Town. I promise I haven't made that up.
Jason McAteer played for Sunderland reserves against Manchester United reserves.

I remember that game. Waddle hardly moved all game and still outplayed everyone on the pitch.

And I think Quinton Fortune played in the same game. I certainly saw him play for United reserves at Moss Lane.

McAteer also played against Alty for Blackburn in a pre-season game in about 2001.
-
Bryan Robson

Any that have DISGRACED Moss Lane?

He never actually played, but Alex Stepney made the 1970 England World Cup Squad for the finals...
From Wikipedia....
Ramsey kept Stepney in his thoughts in his preparations for England's defence of the 1970 World Cup, for which England didn't have to qualify due to their status as holders, but didn't give him another cap as the likes of Bonetti and West added to their meagre tallies of appearances. However, when the preliminary squad of 27 was announced, Stepney was in, along with Banks, Bonetti and uncapped rookie Peter Shilton, with no sign of West. When the final 22 who would travel to Mexico was confirmed, Shilton was the goalkeeper sent home.
Nevertheless, Stepney was clearly the third choice goalkeeper in the squad and the chances of his appearing on the pitch in Mexico were negligible. When Banks went down with food poisoning prior to the quarter final with West Germany, it was to the slightly more experienced Bonetti – who had six caps to Stepney's one – whom Ramsey turned. England squandered a two goal lead to lose 3–2 and it was Stepney who told the groggy, ill Banks the scoreline in his hotel room by holding up three fingers on one hand and two on the other.

A colleague of mine was at a Sportsmans Dinner with Alex Stepney in Essex recently and as a keen United fan he had a chat with the former Alty stalwart.
"what is your biggest regret?" he asked. Two hours later Stepney was still raving about Bonetti being picked ahead of him for the West Germany game!

That's how I remember it - he was a class act... probably the most I've enjoyed watching an ex top level player at Moss Lane.
