Alty TV clip question
« on: March 17, 2008, 11:18:44 PM »

Waching David Baddiel's "Football's Gone Soft," and there was the smallest of clips of a player on Granada's "Kick Off" prog from Friday nights in the late 70s early 80s.

It was a player doing a Frank Spencer impression saying "and Jeff Johnson will score 2 goals."

My guess it was an item about one of our big FA Cup games. Anyone know any more about this?

If my memory is correct it was Graham Hayes, a red haired midfielder that we signed from Macc.
It was taken before the FA Trophy Final in 1978. After the Jeff Johnson Quip, he said this is Balck Beard (Kingy) and I predict that he is going to chin someone.

Yes, that's definitely Graham Heys, a winger who we signed from Macc for a reputed fee of £1,500 in February 1978.

By the time he arrived at Moss Lane, he was cup-tied, having already played in the FA Trophy for Macc that season.

I believe that he emigrated to Australia the following season.

The records say that he made 9 (+4 as sub) appearances in the Northern Premier League for Alty, scoring two goals in the process.

If I remember correctly, Graham Heys scored his two goals as bookends on his career - his first was on his debut, and was one of our typical 4-1 home wins in the 77-8 season (although I can't remember against who - Worksop, Gainsbrough, Morecambe - that kind of team) and his second was in his last match for Alty - a depressing 3-1 home defeat to Southport in 78-9 that convinced me that Mossley were going to win the NPL.  Would probably make a shortest ever Robins XI.

Just shows you how times have chnaged, we'd baulk at the thought of paying £1,500 for a player these days, and that was 30 years ago when it was a lot of money   ::)

I thought that was a figment of my imagination! It did happen!

Thank you for all that info. It was surreal to see that clip and it had a wee interview with Gerald Sinstadt (remember him?). He looks more like Quasimodo these days!
