Me too. I could walk there just about! Only Havant and Waterloovile would be nearer.

Second, third and fourth Qualifying, first and second Proper...........quite happy with the money from the next one. Don't want the fixture backlog to affect our promotion.push.

The Maid was dead fit in Caecilius (Anita) I was in love with her ,cerburus the dog . not bad seeing as i was thrown out of latin classes....... 40 years ago
-
Had to make do with a selection of extracts from the Aeneid as well as some poems, Latin teaching has moved on
-
That Caecilius was always going to the forum but I never saw any toga wearing bloke in Wythenshawe, he wouldn't have standed a chance.
The Gazelle will get this but not all, several of my FB WHGS friends still regard a certain Latin teacher as Julian C**t Wilde. I'm sure he'll concur ;D
-
He might never have got to the forum, but Caecilius, Metella and Quintus did get in the Doctor Who episode The Fires of Pompeii.
Funny how Latin teachers arfe so memorable. At MGS we had Herbie Moore; put the fear of God into us and ended up one of the most respected and loved of teachers.

John "Taffy" Roberts at SaleGSB was the same.

Ken "Beaky" Hodgkinson at Alty Grammar was far too nice to be a teacher really. Used to fall repeatedly for the practical jokes we played on him. But he introduced us to the brilliant humour of Stephen Leacock at the end of each term. Alas, it took a subsequent year of patient pressure from Keith Nodding (later to be Head !) to actually get me through O level Latin, thus proving the school motto "Labor Omnia Vincit". Was it useful ? Well it's certainly of help for the Times crossword !
-
KETH NODDING was my stand-off half when I was scrum-half with Bowdon R.U.F.C.

I remember his bike was hoiked up the flagpole at AGS one April Fools Day. Brilliantly partial cricket umpire too.

That happened to Spike Porter as well

I was never taught by HBM but I do have memories of him at Grasmere Camp. The combined efforts of John Pickup, Tony Verity, David Soulsby and Tom Jackson piloted me to a grade 6 O-level and each of them was in his own way memorable - especially Fat Jack, whose summary of my intellectual capabilities ('that cabbage') still echoes down 43 years!

What is everyone on about sorry? ???

Here was me thinking latin was just a catholic thing ie ambrose

Anyway, to get back to the original point of the thread, let's hope that the Mighty Robins classically educate their opponents in this season's FA Cup ties. And given the surprisingly high number of classicists on the Forum, maybe we could stun the opposing fans with a Gregorian Chant or two this season ;)

Before we get back to the subject I need to say - ambrose fecking hell hole tip should have been closed decades ago. incompetent feckers ran, managed and taught when I had the miserable misfortune to attend that institution. I don't use the word 'school' as that infers some form of education. It wasn't a school. It was a waste of many years.
Whenever I drive past I flick the Vs...
I'm not bitter though!
-
Auld left footers for ya... ;D

yep. except in this case they were violent auld left footers...
-
Here was me thinking latin was just a catholic thing ie ambrose
The one year of Latin I did there was dreadful, possibly the single most uninteresting and pointless subject I have ever been taught.
-
I actually found it to be a very interesting subject tbh.
The root of many a contemporary language, very prominent in medicine and law even to this day and, as Taxi Phil said earlier, REALLY useful when tackling crosswords

Excellent subject to take on the sciences and maths because of the great logic and discipline in learning the language.

Disagree. Rugby Union at Ambrose was a thugs game played by thugs encouraged by adult thugs. It was the only sport that mattered and if you didn't like it or weren't good at it then you were made to suffer.

Ditto MGS! Some of the teachers truly inspirational, but shouldn't have been for me.

Indeed, most of London Alty are Altrincham Grammar School old boys, though Hendo's time on Marlborough Road predates the rest of us by a good 50 years. :D

Got to agree with york about ambrose over rated in the early 80 s and most of the teachers especially the christian brothers were sadistic wayne kerrs

They were the least christian people I have ever met.

All organised religion should be consigned to the dustbin of history.....
....and so endeth my sermon for the day that's in it
......but, please god, let's have a decent cup run this season
-
I'd gladly take reaching the First Round proper and losing to a Conference team.
Not particularly ambitious, but it would restore my faith somewhat to see us actually win three cup ties in a row. Our record in recent years must be one of the very worst of any team in the top two tiers on Non-league.

The draw for the early rounds is due out on Friday - will probably cover Extra Prelim (Aug 11), Prelim (Aug 25) & 1st Qual (Sep 8) only, but we might get an idea of who might get through to 2Q.
-
Dangerous to predict results though eh Mike?
I mean, we'd never lose at home to Witton would we??

Bill,
That's an extremely credible scenario....with one glaring exception.
I suspect that it would go to a replay before we would overcome Runcorn.
-
I should have included Wigan - if we've got Runcorn, Vics and Macc we should have Wigan too

I'm relieved that you've avoided the poisoned chalice that is Witton Albion.

A few local games in the Extra Prelim Round (Aug 11) - Irlam v Hallam, Glossop v Louth, Cheadle Town v Maltby Main, Stockport (ex Woodley) Sports v Ashton Athletic
Prelim Round (Aug 25) includes
Northwich Vics v Curzon Ashton - come on the Nash!
Clitheroe v Radcliffe
1st Qual Round draw (Sept 8th) includes
Worksop v Frickley - horrible places to go for a cup-tie!
Chorley v Nantwich - a potential banana skin if we drew the winner!
Stocksbridge v Marine
AFC Fylde, FCUM & (Northwich or) Curzon have home ties; Witton & Ashton United have away ties.
FA website has full details.

Horrible story. But, as above, not surprising.
Personally I'm of the opinion that all religions have a pernicious influence on society. But the fact that people continue to follow the Catholic Church after the incredible number of abuse scandlas that have come out is absolutely completely beyond my comprehension.
Hopefully those responsible - directly or indirectly/complicitly - will be brought to justice.

Of course they exist. You could name any profession and there would be the odd paedophile amongst their ranks.
However, the Catholic Church is a special case:-
1. If you deny priests the right to a healthy sexual relationship, is it any wonder they seek out gratification in whatever way they can? The scale of the the abuse within that institution is unbelievable.
2. For decades they have shielded rapists and torturers from legal repercussions in order to preserve their own reputations. Priest/teacher abuses kids in Altrincham? Let's shunt him to Workington and pretend it never happened.
Disgraceful.
