First ball out gets it...we are no 55.
I would imagine that people who weren't going had already decided to watch it on TV at home, so I can't see this decision changing anything.
There will have been many people who were considering but have decided against it for ease of not having to travel
It's not about those that were definitely going or not going to go. It's the middle band of fans. Club should have encouraged more fans with discounted travel or spoken to one of top tier sponsors such as FA or the new suit/ clothing sponsor and asked them put money in for a one off cup game.
I would have been hoping that the ground improvements actually improved something
What are the major ground improvements that have been started?
So, any tips for someone who is not, but might as well be, a first-time attendee?
How long before should I arrive, where to park, any good pre-game pubs, where to sit, etc?
The game looks pretty good to go now so I wouldn't worry about that. I'd arrive around 2:30 to avoid the turnstile congestion. Any later and you may have a small wait. If you want to park nearby then the car park behind Aecom is ideal, free to use: https://goo.gl/maps/ZG8ZdpoH1zc4dotr9
Pre-game drinking is better in the town centre but if you wanted to park within the vicinity of the ground I'd suggest just getting in and getting one at the ground. You can take it out in a plastic cup and enjoy it while the atmosphere builds. Main haunts in the town centre for fans will be Libero in Kings Court and probably Costellos in Goose Green. Plenty of other top pubs around the town but I'd steer clear of the Station Hotel as there will most likely be a load of York in there.
A few years ago the club asked for volunteers to come forward in order to form a working party who could be contacted in the event of inclement weather. They would ring people to (for example) come down and fork the pitch and/or move pitch covers. I seem to recall that it worked quite well, so would it be worth doing it again?
I suggested this to the club with regards to the pitch covers as, I was told, one of the reasons they weren't being used was man power. Building a list of "on call" volunteers for such weather is something many clubs do.
Oooops ......Sorry: back to footy and hoping that barrier is fixed
Serious Issue, it was a disaster last time. I’ve put the fencing back up this afternoon that has been pulled down that was surrounding the container at the end of the car park. The council need to get out and fix that hight barrier urgently or they’ll be on there for the summer.
The seating arrangements aren't designed for conversation with groups, so most will choose to stand and therefore their dwell time is shortened.
Just to add to the questions re ground improvements, I've seen Altrincham Unlimited regularly organise "jet washing" of town-centre pavements and the results are transformational. Perhaps worth looking at as a bit of soft improvement.
Respect their views - absolutely, but ‘admire’ I’m afraid not.
Awarded to Chorley at step 2 for this season. I'm not sure quite where queuing over three quarters of an hour, and then finding one of my cheeseburgers had no cheese on it, fits in with this accolade.
I also found it weird that they uncapped the drink bottles, making it virtually impossible to carry them in your pocket. Apparently it was in case the caps were used as missiles. Of course, nobody would dream of throwing the empty bottle !
2 cheeseburgers?? Removing of bottle tops is quite common in the football league, it’s the full bottle with the top on they class as a missile, not the cap so you were misinformed by someone at Chorley.
There is some irony in our own ground regulations forbidding such items to be brought in...
6. The following articles must not be brought within the Ground – knives, fireworks, smoke canisters, air-horns, flares, weapons, dangerous or hazardous items, laser
devices, bottles, glass vessels, cans, poles and any article that might be used as a weapon and/or compromise public safety. Any person in possession of such items
will be refused entry to the Ground.
I've seen it stated that removing bottle caps is for 'health and safety'. A bottle on the floor with a cap on will roll if stepped on but with the cap off it will more likely flatten under the foot. Might make some sense. Certainly more than anything to do with them being used as missiles.
I'm pretty sure its the missles element, in much the same way that Witton Albion refused to allow me a can of coke, without them pouring it into a plastic glass first. I also had some comments at our ground from one of the brought in stewards that I'm not allowed to serve cans of pop!
