Gazelle - You definately came with us that day. You were well blotto when we picked you up, I think from the Cheshire Midland in Hale and threw you in the back of my car - and this would have been about midday if not earlier.
Jed Toothill was in the front seat, I was driver and I cant remember who you slept with in the back - could have been Smokey (Jed's mate who was a Butcher in Hale Barns). I am pretty sure there were 4 of us.
I remember Tootill telling a Welsh Man U fan in that Pub in Deganwy that "he wouldnt be seen dead watching Man United" - now you know why he is a turncoat.

The youngsters dont know what they missed in those days

Gazelle, times have changed. Do you remember coming with me to Bangor on a bitterly cold Boxing Day in the late 70's ?
We stopped on the way there at my Auntie's local in Deganwy. There were no Pubs open near the ground. On the way back it was well after Chester before we found a Pub that was open. You may not remember as you slept most of the way there, and all the way home, in the back of my car as we collected you to go to the game straight from an all-night bender. Fair play to you - you didnt miss the match, the bitterly cold wind from the Irish sea kept us awake that day (I only recall York and Buxton being colder places).  Alty won 5-4 that day and I think JR got 4 that day.

I went to watch Redhill lose 1-0 at home to Arundel today and met a Wrexham supporter in the bar.
He travels from East Surrey for most of their matches.
Says he is looking forward to playing us next season.
Couldnt fathom out if he is pesimistic that they will definately go down this time and
optimistic that we will stay up !!!!.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Top 5 Alty Hardnuts?

No.1  - and by miles "six foot 2 eyes are blue GERRY CASEY's after you. Tony Saunder's wrote an article in a National Sunday paper before the Tottenham game saying Gerry was the hardenst nut he ever met in Football. There was a standing joke that an Everton player made a prematch treat to Gerry that he would break his leg. Gerry's reaction was "son, I'm 36 and have seen blokes that would eat you for dinner, but if you want to mix it, you dont have to come looking for me". Sure he wasnt the quickest defender, but he was a very good Centre Half, and not much went past him. Challenged for everything - a great competitor. Compared to Gerry, Liverpool's legendry Toomy Smith was a fairy.

2. Joe Pritchard - Gerry Casey's partner on the pitch and on building sites. A lot quieter verbally than Gerry, but a real tuogh nut - also our leading scorer one season.

3. Johnny King - hard and loved to mix it. However, got as much as he gave, probably because he wound up opponents even before the match started.

4. Les Campbell - the hardman of the Jackie Swindells era. Was there also another player of that era that had a reputation and got lengthy suspensions, or was it just Les ?

5. Lennie Dickenson - I also remember that incident again Macc at Stockport which as good as cost us the match. If I am correct it was on Ian Morris who Alty later signed from Macc ?

Longman, you are wrong as a Scotsman has actually been Assistant Manager of England - John Gorman was Glenn Hoddle's second in command. He was also entitled to sing that song that England teams persist in using as an anthem, as its not the English Anthem but officially the British National Anthem. I have heard that Anthem sung by Scotsmen, albiet Rangers Supporters who were described by their own club Captain as "moronic".

This resentment of other nations making use of their players ancestry amazes me. England have for decades made use of players that not only were not born here, but in many instances have no English blood in them whatsoever - Colin Viljoen, Brian Stein, Cyril Regis, Tony Dorigo and John Barnes spring to mind. Half the present Cricket team was not born here and the English Rugby team has taken the same advantage. The only Irish Sportsman without Irish blood in him is Jack Charlton who actually became an Irish Citizen after managing the Republic of Ireland at Football and went on to represent Ireland as a participant at a World Cup in another sport.

and, redhill alty, what was the best?

An almighty righthand slap thrown by a stunningly beautifull blond bird, in a Pub in Market Harborough, after we won the APL Cup at Kettering in 1981.
She nearly took the Gazelle's head off !!!!!

Kingy was a colossus. His mere presence put us on the front foot in any match. Opponents were already wound up before he made one shout. His hardness gave protection to GH to carve out masterpieces in midfield. Personally I though Graham Barrow was a better all round player, buy Kingy's influence was priceless. Alty's achievements under his Captaincy where second to none. "  2 APL Championships, APL League Cup, FA Trophy and 4 FA Cup 3rd round appearances all in the space of 5 years. Even when he wasnt playing he was influential. I remember one game when he was sat in the stand next to Noel White (probably suspended) and the dugout of a Southern Club, I think Gravesend, physically attacked our left back John Cavanagh after a touchline tackle. Well Kingy flew from the stand hardly touched the barrier nad flattended the trainer flat out.
It was the second best blow that I have ever seen trown at an Alty related match.

I started watching Alty 5 years later in 1963 when Johnny Mitten was our striker. I remember the season our pitch looked like Southport beach. Goals were leaking in so next season Freddie Pye signed a great goalkeeper, Mick Smyth who went on to play for the Republic of Ireland. That was before the roof was put on the Golf Road End.

The Jackie Swindells era were the first glory years. Crowds were fantastic. I remember teems of Supporters walking down Clover Road in Timperley in Red and White scalves on their way to Moss Lane via the Golf course footpath. Jack's goalscoring record disguises the fact we had a great team not just Jack - Pat Connolly, Neil Dewar, Les Campbell, Derek Halliwell, Neal Peters. The hype in the town when we beat Rochdale 3-1 away in the FA Cup was fantastic.

The team that played Everton was loveable - full of characters such as Gerry Casey, Peter Eales, Joey Pritchard ect. John Hughes was a great goalscorer and GH could put a ball on a sixpence.

did your mate tony have a younger brother , called jonathan ? sadly deceased now.

I am not sure. He has a sister called Angela, and I think he has a sibling but a lot younger than both Tony and his sister. Tony will be 51 now. Their Dad came from Derry. They lived just off Hayes Lane.

Got to agree that Kingy comes out on top. 2 Championship titles, FATrophy, League Cup and round 3 of the FA Cup on 4 successive seasons all in the space of 5 years while he was team leader. Jackie Swindells goal record will never be broken and Derek Halliwell wa a great captain.

I was at the game today with my 5 year old son who has been brainwashed into supporting Alty although we now live 220 miles away from Moss Lane. Stuart pulled off a couple of brilliant saves that kept us in the game - without those it would have been a repeat of the recent game at Oxford. Yes Cambridge were the better team, but Alty played well, there was a lot of good passing and cohesion today, and we kept trying to play football. In all a good performance and with a bit of luck we could have got at least a point. There seemed to be a belief in the team today that although we were 1-0 down for most of the game, we could salvage something. Robbie nearly broke the bar. Performances like today should see us stay up. We should get something against Woking, who are one of the worse teams I have seen this season, but expect them to raise their game for the cameras.

Yes Alty Dave I was on that Special train to Rotherham. I have been reminded about that game a lot recently as I am working with a Barnsley supporter and there was a big gang of Barnsley supporters with us behind that goal that day. I went with an old BTH schoolmate of mine, Tony Deane, a 6'6"" lanky fruitcase of a City supporter from the Grange Estate who went to Alty games where things were likely to kick off on the terraces - he once nearly got me lynched at Wigan when we won one evening in the 1970's. That Barry Howard goal rates as one of the best in Alty history.

Everton - when the draw was made they were top of the old 1st Dision and we were top of the NPL. We scared the living daylights out of them, and should have won not for a rare sitter missed by Johnny Hughes in the second half at 1-0 and a dodgy penalty. However Southern League Wimbledon made the headlines the following day by beating bottom of the 1st division Burnley away 1-0. The downside of the games with Everton was that every team we played that season treated their game with Alty as their Cup Final, this included crap sides like Wigan, who we played the following week in the FA Trophy. As a result of the Cup run that season, although we were favourites to win the NPL, we got involved in the usual end of season fiature pile up and blew it. I still view Wigan as a Non League Club and they should never have got promoted to the Football League ahead of us. I remember us losing 4-1 away to Netherfield that season.
