And I'm delighted!!   My son has been selected to represent Buckinghamshire in the High Jump at the English Schools Athletics Championships.  I have told him that every time I've been to the Gateshead International Atlhletics Stadium I have come away delighted after a 3-0 Alty win in 1979 and a 3-2 win in 1995.  At least I won't be miles away from the action this time and there will be a lot more than 200 people there!

Altrincham FC First Team / from the CSC final programme
« on: April 18, 2011, 12:31:36 PM »
In the CSC final programme, there was a picture of Alty's cup winning team of 1905.

This was remarkable for two reasons.

Firstly, in the back row at the extreme left we have the first recorded photograph of a behatted youthful George Heslop.

Secondly, third from the right on the back row is none other than Jeff Johnson!

See the attachment below.

... does anyone understand / remember / can anyone explain:

1974/75

Northern Premier League Cup 2nd Round: Gainsborough Trinity 0 Altrincham 1
Match ordered to be replayed as Gainsborough played ineligible player.

Replay: Gainsborough Trinity 2 Altrincham 0

What??

They played an ineligible player, so we got thrown out?
Why didn't the NPL just leave things as they were?

Altrincham FC First Team / Staying up - a beginners guide
« on: January 02, 2011, 02:06:23 PM »
I reckon 52 points will keep us in this league.  That means we need 37 pts from 24 games - not unachievable, it's midvtable form (9th to 11th)

In addition there is a mini league of 10 teams at the bottom from Kettering down who are in the relegation scrap and from whom we need to get most of our points.  And as luck would have it 8 of these 9 still need to visit Moss Lane.

So wins against Southport, Hayes, his ton, Eastbourne, Fgr, Gateshead, tam worth, Kettering at moss lane and away at Fgr, barrow and tamworth give us 33 of the necessary survival points.

Draws with Cambridge bath York and Newport at moss lane would take us over the line.

And anything we got at Rushden Grimsby Mansfield Wrexham, Kiddy, fleet wood, Newport Wimbledon would be a bonus

Of course to achieve this, we need to start scoring...

« on: July 04, 2010, 01:04:25 PM »
Sometime before christmas it is likely that Stuart will make his 500th start for Alty.  He only needs 19 to achieve this mark.

to put it inot context, jeff wealnds played 273 games for Alty, Peter Eales around 200 and John Connaughton about 100.

What a great servant for the club!

Altrincham FC First Team / Wrexham - on the verge of a great season
« on: April 28, 2010, 09:48:31 AM »
It's alright everyone - don't panic: Dean Saunders has actually done a brilliant job at Wrexham this season.  They are close to their most succesful season EVER.

From the inimitable John Laidlar:

"The Dragons reserves take on Accrington Stanley at the Racecourse tomorrow (7pm) seeking the victory that would confirm them champions of the Totesport.com league, while the club’s youth team are through to the Welsh FA Youth Cup final where they will meet either Swansea City or Llandudno"

And all this in an environment where they are having to massively cut back: Saunders again "We may have five fewer players next year because of the financial cuts but I can live with that, provided we get the right people in and we have relatively good luck with injuries. If necessary we will have to go into the loan market and hopefully I’ll be able to bring in players who will either cost us nothing or not too much'”.

I really don't know how they are going to survive with as few as 57 players in their squad.

Altrincham FC First Team / Remember 10 years ago
« on: March 15, 2010, 08:15:00 AM »

Being superstitious and generally nervous about all things Alty, four consecutive draws and 5 games without a win automatically makes me think of 1999-2000 and the old adage "12th in March and still relegated".

So I've done a quick comparison between the two seasons and we have nothing to worry about:

2009 -2010 from 33 games we have earnt 45 points
1999-2000 was nothing like as succesful: in our first 33 games we only earnt 44 points!

in 99-00 we drew our 34th game against Kettering to move to 45 points from 34, with the following game being against Rushden which we lost!  We had earlier picked up a hard earned point at Kingsmeadow.

So no comparison there at all.

"If you can prevent Perry and Duffy from falling over in the box, which is a tall order, you may be alright. May I suggest two players mark each man, and at all times try to support their body weight to prevent their legs from collapsing beneath them.

Also they're very dirty, so say some bad words in their ears and they'll likely attack you and get sent off."

This second sentence shows where we went wrong!  We let them intimidate us, rather than the other way round

Altrincham FC First Team / Weather Forecast from the South...
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:27:45 AM »
It took me 4 hours to get to work this morning - snowing heavily to the west of London and in Bucks.

It is snowing (but not settling) in central London - but I can imagine Kent will be hard hit once the snow reaches.

Annoyingly I am passing through Ebbsfleet on Friday and again on Sunday - Eurostar permitting (working in Lille on Friday and Monday but hopefully in the Wimbledon area on Tuesday - has originally planned to be in Nottingham).

Weather forecast for gravesend is above freezing from Thursday onwards (thus giving chance for thaw) but this snow is heavier than anticipated

Altrincham ticket sales suspended

There is over an inch of snow on the pitch and the exposed terraces. Even if that isn't a lot compared to some parts of the country, there is more snow falling heavily now, and underneath the snow the pitch is already frozen. Therefore, we have suspended ticket sales for Saturday's game against Altrincham.

The FA is understandably keen that every game is given the maximum possible chance of going ahead and so pitch inspections cannot take place before Friday morning - and even then only under 'extreme weather' conditions. Nonetheless, we will be in regular contact with the FA so that we can keep fans up to date.

If Saturday's game is called off, it can be played the following Tuesday, 12 January. If the weather prevents any postponed game being played on that date, then we understand that Trophy ties take precedence over midweek league games (but not Saturday league games) - so if the extreme weather persists we might find that the home game against Grays is displaced by this Trophy tie.

This information is published to allow fans to make whatever contingency arrangements they feel are appropriate - we stress that no decision has been made about Saturday's game.
