Altrincham FC First Team / Through the years
« on: October 07, 2012, 11:09:25 PM »
Mr Laidlaw makes reference to our acquiescence at Salisburyon this Saturday In 2007 (a match I watched the  horrific last 15 minutes of live on Ceefax in Currys in Slough) but I would prefer to remember the 4-0 crushing of Bath in 1979, the match I realised we had nothing to fear from the Southern League clubs

Also note the 9-0 victory over Moulton Verdun in the FA Cup in 1934: they still exist as a working mans club in Northwich I discover: probably bigger than Vics now!!

Where is everybody?  First goalless first half since away bishops Stortford in Feb?  Nerves jangling!

Altrincham FC First Team / Damian Reeves's milestone
« on: April 10, 2012, 12:34:06 AM »
So 42 league goals means he has scored at least a goal a game on average in the league, even if he draws a blank in the last 3 games.

The only time this has been done since the war was Jackie Swindells's 57 goals in 42 games in 65-66 (my first season!).  Even Jackie only managed 40 goals in 42 games the following season.

we will probably have to wait another 46 years to see it again (and then I will die with an Alty career in perfect symettry)

Altrincham FC First Team / Today is the day...
« on: April 09, 2012, 11:37:19 AM »
...that the last time we were in the Conference North, we reignited our playoff hopes with an unexpected 2-1 win in Yorkshire.

This day7 years ago (very) late goals from Val Owen and Rod Thornley earned us a win at Bradford Park Avenue.

But this day last year - and more in keeping with recent "big match" performances, a nailed on 0-0 at Forest Green slipped away and in the end saw us down...

Altrincham FC First Team / If we were to get in the playoffs..
« on: January 31, 2012, 09:36:20 AM »
... we would be on a hell of a roller coaster.

Lets put forward some hypotheses, by utilisng this years league scores

Altrincham v Worcester City
At 4-0 up in the home leg into injury time Alty were cruising this tie but a late penalty paved the way for a resurgent Worcester to win the second leg 3-0 and dump Alty out on away goals (yes I know there are no away goals in playoffs but please dont let the facts get in the way of a good story)

Droylesden v Altrincham
Droylesden coped better with the conditions at a wet Butchers Arms outplaying a hapless Alty team and taking a 3-1 lead to Moss Lane.  Things didn't look good for Alty but a barn storming performance, including a Reeves hat trick saw Alty win 5-1 and progress 6-4 on aggregate

Altrincham v Colwyn Bay
In a game where defenders struggled it ironically took an injury time winner by veteran stalwart Frank Sinclair to give the Welsh side the narrowest advantage for their home leg.  Alty roared into a two goal lead before Bay leveled the tie on aggregate just after half time.  It looked like Colwyn Bay were getting on top and few could forsee the outturn as a majestic Alty were rampant, including a sublime lob from Clee.  Debutant Matt Fearon at left back brought a measure of stability to the Alty defence but few could have foreseen the Alty 9-5 aggregate victory

Ties Still in the Balance

Second Legs:

Altrincham (1) v Stalybridge (5) - surely no way back for the Robins here but they do have that all important away goal.  All they need to do is score 4 times (eminently possible) and keep a clean sheet (Stalybridge to progress!)

Corby Town (1) v Altrincham (1) - too difficult to call, but with our away form the Steelmen should be favourites

Altrincham (4) v AFC Town of Halifax (2) - Look, I can't predict how we will play.  A two goal advantage should be enough - but really, who knows

Guiseley(2) v Altrincham (2) - new signing Chris Senior is likely to make the difference here

Nuneaton (0) v Altrincham (2) - not sure we could hold this lead...

Boston Utd (1) v Altrincham (6) - a little bit more confident about this one!

Altrincham (0) v Gainsbrough (2) - I really do think we could win the return 4-1

One thing is certain - if we do find our way into the playoffs, no matter how we do in the 1st leg there is no guaranteed outcome to the tie!  Even more "Extreme Alty" than usual this season I fear

Altrincham FC First Team / League Goals in a Season
« on: January 23, 2012, 09:51:43 AM »
Since the War:

1. Jackie Swindells 1965-6 56 goals
2. Jackie Swindells 1966-7 40 goals
3. Walter Jones 1948-9 35 goals
4. Walter Jones 1947-8 33 goals
5. Jackie Swindells 1967-8 33 goals
6. Damian Reeves 2011-12 31 goals
7. John Rogers 1978-9 29 goals

His performance this season puts him up there with the greats - and we still have 17 games to go!

Altrincham FC First Team / Another Trivia Question
« on: December 27, 2011, 11:53:31 PM »
Of our opponents this season, three have something in common that does not apply (I beleive) to any other club we have ever played.

So three clubs in the BSN this season will (by the end of the season) have something in common that no other club in our history can claim.

What is the unique common link and who are the 3 clubs?

If we had played any of these clubs last season the "unique" would not have applied...

Altrincham FC First Team / Roy Rees RIP
« on: December 09, 2011, 10:48:25 PM »
Very sad news to see him pass.

Took us to Goodison, relit the Freddie Pye torch, and laid the path for Tony Sanders.

Peter Eales, Stan Allen, JohnOwens, John Davison, Gerry Casey, Ivan Crossley, !
Mickey Brooke, John Hughes, lennie Dickenson, andy Windsor, phil smith, Roy hughes were all brought to the club by Roy

Graham heathcote was given his break, Ian Morris was brought back...

Alty would not have the reputation for greatness without Roy Rees.

Rest in Peace and thank you

Altrincham FC First Team / 34 years ago...
« on: November 20, 2011, 03:06:09 PM »
...this coming Saturday, John King made his Alty debut at Worksop.

In an inauspicious start, we lost 1-0 with Heathcote going off injured after kicking the corner flag at a corner.

On his home debut he fired us ahead against Matlock in a 2-1 win.

Greatness for Alty started that day, November 26th 1977 - perhaps it can begin again on November 26 2011

(the very definition of optimist!)

Altrincham FC First Team / On track
« on: November 10, 2011, 03:05:47 PM »
Amazingly, 15 league games into the season we are still on track to do something we have not done since 1967-68, and only eight times ever (or at least since joining the Lancashire Combination in 1911).

Any ideas what?

Altrincham FC First Team / 7 home matches unbeaten
« on: October 17, 2011, 06:48:16 PM »
It may amaze our younger fans to know we have achieved the milestone of being unbeaten after the first 7 home matches as many as 12 times in the last 50 years!

And in doing so, we have won the championship 3 times, made the equivalent of the playoffs 7 times and only missed out twice.

Here is the data:
Season                    Final position                                                      Number of matches unbeaten
2004-05             5th  - Playoffs         8 matches
1986-87             5th (i.e Playoffs)                                   13 matches
1979-80             Champions         19 unbeaten
1977-78             5th            17 matches – 1 home defeat to Mossley
1974-75             3rd            15 matches
1973-74             3rd            19 matches – 1 home defeat to Macclesfield
1972-73             4th            11 matches
1968-69             9th            8 matches – only 2 away wins did for us (1st season NPL)
1967-68             2nd            18 – 1 home defeat Macclesfield (who won title)
1966-67             1st            13 – 1 home defeat Macclesfield
1965-66             1st            21 Unbeaten all season
1964-65             8th            9 matches

Altrincham FC First Team / Lawrie
« on: October 10, 2011, 04:32:06 PM »

When James Lawrie is match fit he is going to be awesome - he's probably 2-3 months away from regaining full sharpness and will definitely not be ready for the Conference National before the end of January.

I know we can only get about an hour out of him in most games - but the signs are there: another 6 or so months at Alty and he might be ready for a higher level.

You wouldn't want to rush these things though: another couple of seasons at Alty and we should give him back to Telford.

Altrincham FC First Team / Milestone
« on: September 17, 2011, 11:51:56 PM »
Well done to Stuart Coburn who today became the first Alty player to play 50 conference north league games.

Well, I've got to try to find something to celebrate!

75
Altrincham FC First Team / Workington - an Altycentric history
« on: August 16, 2011, 02:44:58 PM »

When Workington got thrown out of the league they got off to a dreadful start in the Northern Premier League, heavily losing their first 6 matches.

On 14th September 1977, Alty rolled into town and got turned over 2-1, an Ian Morris equaliser being cancelled out by an 83rd minute winner by Martin Leng.

When they came to Moss Lane over Christmas, we beat them 5-1.  Walter Gilliat fired Workington ahead on 39 mins, before a 15 minute Heathcote hat trick at the start of the second half turned the game on its head, in front of 1002.

Two weeks later we returned to Cumbria for the Trophy 1st round and were lucky to escape with a 0-0: a Heathcote-esque free kick in the 90th minute cleared the wall and shaved the top of the cross bar.  We were that close to going out of the competition - but instead went on to win it and start the march towards best non league club in the country

Matches against Workington at Moss Lane

NPL Dec 77 5-1 Heathcote 3, Johnson, King Att:1002
FAT Jan 78 4-0 Rogers2, Heathcote, Bailey Att: 1100
NPL Apr 79 3-2 Rogers, Heathcote, Johnson Att: 1184

So if we continue the trend, there will be a lot of goals and those who score them will go on to be Alty legends, playing for years in a highly succesful Alty side
