Altrincham FC First Team / Well said Lee
« on: December 07, 2015, 05:57:37 PM »
From the main site:

just want to place on record huge thanks from myself, all the staff and, of course, all the players for the support we had today, the number of people who travelled, the effort and input from them, the noise levels, everything. Given the distance involved, the time they had to set off for a 2pm kick-off and the expense, it was quite exceptional, and every single one of them is a credit to Altrincham Football Club.

'It involved travelling a good 200-plus miles, yet you would have thought we were the home team, the way they got behind the players and stuck by them to the very end. That level of vocal backing most certainly played a part in lifting the players and driving them on to a performance that so nearly took us over the line.

'I said afterwards we could take a lot of pride from the performance, even if the result didn't go our way, and I can tell you the club take a lot of pride from the way our supporters rose to the occasion as well. For me, they deserve as much praise as the players for showing Altrincham in such a good light.

'Straight after the final whistle, when the papers, radio and TV are after quotes, you get caught up in all the dramatic moments they're asking you about. It slipped my mind to mention our supporters, and I'm sorry about that. I wasn't asked, but perhaps it should have occurred to me, so I would like to apologise now and set the record straight by saying they were brilliant. Thanks so much for all you did, all your sterling efforts, and that's from the whole team as well as me.'

Altrincham FC First Team / First visit to Colchester
« on: November 10, 2015, 11:47:43 AM »
During the 90-91 season I was living in Paris, and hurried out of the office around 10 o'clock every Monday morning to buy a Daily Telegraph which not only gave goalscorers etc on Conference matches, but also had a couple of paragraphs on the league games that Saturday.

Since Christmas our unbeaten run had changed from being something of statistical interest, to my dawning realisation in the shadow of the Arc de Triopmhe that we had a real chance of winning the league.  It was a 4 horse race between Kettering (who were miles clear top at one point), Barnet, Colchester United (relegated from Division 4 the season before) and ourselves.

A 2-2 home draw with Colchester in January, with a last minute equaliser was followed at the end of that month by McKennas famous last minute Moss Lane winner against Kettering and the Easter weekend at the end of March saw a brilliant 4-1 trouncing of Barnet followed by Easter Monday's 1-1 draw at Kettering.

3 weeks later came the last big hurdle - the visit to Layer Road.  I still remember my nervousness in picking up the paper that Monday morning and opening it to discover we had got a point with a 1-1 draw with Nicky Daws scoring for Alty.  And there was a quarter page match report, including a photo of celebrating Kingy and players.  The whole tone of the report was 10 years of injustice seems to have been laid to rest as it now looked certain that Alty would be taking their well deserved place in the football league.

And the smile on my face that Monday morning reflected that.  Little did I know - little did any of us know - that the draw at Colchester represented the High Water Mark of our progress and that for many years the tide would be heading in the opposite direction.

We are on our way back - but in the intervening 25 years the world has changed.

Given it is close season and the quality and quantity of submissions is somewhat strained, I would like to suggest a new game.

Identify a celebrity lookalke for Alty players of the present or past.  (It would help if I could post pictures!)

Altrincham FC First Team / Comparison
« on: December 01, 2014, 03:54:21 PM »
We have reached 23 games played with 28 points on the board.

Looking back, I find the following after 23 games:

2010 - 11 18 points (finished 21st)
2009 - 10 29 points (finished 14th)
2008 - 09 29 points (finished 15th)
2007 - 08 17 points (finished 21st)
2006 - 07 25 points (finished 21st)
2005 - 06 23 points (finished 18th) (before points deduction)
1999-2000 29 points (finished 21st)
1996-97  28 points (finished 22nd)

So we are better off than in any of our relegation seasons with the exception of the bizarre season that was 1999-00 and our first relegation in 1996.

From this point to the end of the season in 96-7 we only picked up 11 more points!  And it all began to fall apart with a game on 30th Nov 96 (18 years and 1 day ago) with a 7-1 defeat at Woking!

Altrincham FC First Team / Days Like These
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:48:54 PM »
To get us in the right mood for Saturday, I would like to propose  a thread where we recall great Alty days from the past...

There are many but our younger fans have been a bit starved of them.

I will start with Gravesend & Northfleet 0 Altrincham 2 from May 1980, the day we won the inaugural Alliance Premier League.

How many of us travelled to Kent that day?  How nervous were we with Weymouth on our tails, and Boston still in with a chance of the title?

We did not need to worry - a comfortable 2-0 win courtesy of Barry Howard and John Rogers meant we were celebrating all through the second half.  And after the game the team threw their shirts to the Alty faithful,  and then their shorts.

Buzzing all the way back home.

Altrincham FC First Team / I am surprised...

... We haven't seen headlines "United raid neighbours for new management team". Salford City have been decimated by a smash and grab raid that has taken three of their leadership to Old Trafford.

It poses the question whether the class of 92 would prefer to run a hobbyist club or lead a big one...

Altrincham FC First Team / Good solid performance
« on: April 15, 2014, 10:29:18 PM »
A really solid performance from Alty this evening on a difficult pitch against robust opposition.  The sandy middle of the pitch led to an erratic bounce.  The long grass on the wings made playing it on the floor very difficult.  Oxford had a mega long throw in which the defence dealt with very well, as they I'd with a number of long free kicks.

We attacked with intent and purpose, particularly in the first half and even the odd poor performance did not lead to players eying to hide.  For example, I was nearly decapitated by a Jake Moult shot that flew 10 yards wide (not the first from him) but he tested the keeper with a dipping shot 5 minutes later and then scored the derive goal a couple of minutes after that.

I though Walshaw and Reeves combined well at times today, and created space well with off the ball running for Clee and Lawrie.  Reevesies was unlucky with the bounce on a number of occasions in the first half, their wise he would ave scored.

All in all, a satisfactory performance.

Altrincham FC First Team / Omens?
« on: April 04, 2014, 09:54:49 PM »
I always look at through the years and reminisce and this Saturday has two portents for today's game

Firstly on 5th April 1971 when Alty travelled to arch rivals Macclesfield Town who had won 3 consecutive titles (Cheshire league and the first 2 northern prem titles) as well as picking up the FA trophy in its first season, beating Telford United.  We returned triumphant from Moss Rose, 3-2 courtesy of a Jackie Swindells hat trick.

And in 1986 the stellar Enfield team travelled to Moss Lane for the FA Trophy semi final second leg.  We had played magnificently to get a draw at Southbury Road but Enfield were still the favourites, having beaten us 4-1 at Moss Lane only a few weeks before.  And I had seen them absolutely destroy Barnet 7-0 at Underhill in the FA Cup earlier in the season.  They were barnstorming their way to their second APL title and are the only team who gets close to our 79-80 side.  We won 2-0 and went on to beat Runcorn at Wembley.

In my opinion, these are two of the best results in our history (top 50 maybe!) and a win tomorrow could be one we look back on with pride in years to come.

Altrincham FC First Team / Saturday
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:56:59 PM »
The 22nd March date represents a major milestone in our history.  On  this date in 1965 we beat Macc Town 3-2 in the Cheshire League Cup with two goals from an attacking midfielder making his debut, Jackie Swindells.

A true turning point in the history of the club.

Altrincham FC First Team / extrapolation
« on: February 24, 2014, 09:34:52 PM »
Not done of these for a number of seasons but extrapolating home and away form separately I find the following:  Telford champions on goal difference from North Ferriby both 82 points. Brackley and Hednesford on 78 and 76, Alty next on 74 then Harrogate on 70.  Gloucester Oxford and Workington for the drop

Altrincham FC First Team / New milestone for Reevesie
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:06:40 PM »
Damien Reeves has now scored over 100 LEAGUE goals for Alty, only the 4th person ever to do this.  he has 101 goals, just behind Graham Heathcote with 104, Walter Jones with 117 and Jackie Swindells with 195.  I would hope he'd be second before the end of the season.
