Altrincham FC First Team / Crowds
« on: March 29, 2007, 10:40:15 AM »
With three games to go, I believe we are almost certain to increase our average attendance over last year and even on course to average 1100 over the season.

In order to average 1000 for the season, we need only another 266 fans through the turnstiles - so 2:30 on Saturday should see us through this milestone

In order to average more than last season's 1048, we only need another 1370 fans for the season - only 457 per game: I think that should be achievable.

In order to average over 1100, we need a total of 2566 over the three games, i.e. an average of 855 for the last three games.

Compare this to the crowds we were getting in the Unibond and there is no doubt at all that we are re-establishing ourselves as an integral part of the town.  And as a profitable club with no debts.  If we can stay up this year, we are truly building the foundations for long term success.  And, Alty  being Alty we won't know if we've survived until 4:45pm on the last day - but whether we do or not, we are surely in massively better shape than even three seasons ago.

This relegation saga has more twists and turns than a pirouetting Stafford Rangers player tumbling to the ground as the zephyr of a spring breeze destabilises his balance.  Vics now in the mix and Crawley beginning to sink.

Altrincham FC First Team / Stafford memories
« on: March 27, 2007, 10:51:08 AM »
Looking back through the dusty cobwebs of my mind, I can see four occasions where a match at Moss Lane against Stafford in March (ish) has been a watershed:

72/3 Alty 0 Stafford 1 We had an outside chance of the title, chasing Jim Smiths Boston United and Wigan Athletic hard.  Stafford (also in the mix) came to Moss Lane and although we peppered their goal (hit the bar, hit the post, offside goal, great save, missed a sitter...) we succumbed to a sucker punch goal.  That game convinced me that we wouldn't win the NPL that year.

79/80 Alty 3 Stafford 1 In the home run in the inaugural APL season, Alty ran out comfortable winners against Stafford in front of an impressive 2324 (sadly I remembered the crowd figure).  This game convinced me that not only would we win the APL but we'd have a dman good chance in Division 4 the following season.

81/2 Alty2 Stafford 4 I didn't even get to this match - I hitched up from London but was only walking down Moss Lane at 4:40.  Before I got to the ground, I saw Alty fans heading towards the stationand they told me the score.  On hearing the score, I was convinced that we were no longer a force in non league football.

2004/05 Alty 1 Stafford 0 Marcus Hallows' last goal for Altrincham - a sparkling move that culminate with a low cross from Pottsy being finished with aplomb by Elvis.  This game convinced me that we would make the playoffs.

And now 2006/07 - will this game convince me that we are now established members of the conference?

9 hours to kick off!!

Altrincham FC First Team / Alty Scorer on the mark again

I see Okuonghae (o.g.) scored for Weymouth against Crawley last night to follow up on his recent goal for us against Crawley....

And a couple of observations:

It's so tight that if we had LOST the last 3 games instead of won them, we'd be bottom now.  So we need to keep picking up points as any team could win three on the trot...

We've now got 14 points away from home in 18 games, and last season we got 15 points in 21 games - so suddenly we're better away this season than we were last season - how quickly things change

Not wishing to step on Mr Flynn's toes:

Forecasting home and away seperately (which hurts us):

Woking 49
Halifax 49
FGR 48
Stafford 47
Cambridge 44
--------------
Tamworth 43
Grays 43
Altrincham 43
St Albans 40

tight!

and before last nights results it was:

Woking 51
Halifax 49
FGR 48
Stafford 47
Cambridge 46
Grays 45
----------
Altrincham 41
Tamworth 41
St Albans 40
Southport 40

So you can see the difference one night of results makes when teams are so close together.  But currently 47 looks a safe total.

Altrincham FC First Team / Vics and Don Weston
« on: February 20, 2007, 08:21:47 AM »
The official site mourns the passing of Don Weston - of whom my only memory is his hat  trick in the 8-1 drubbing of Vics in 1969.  May his spirit infuse the forwards tonight and create a memory to rival that of 38 years ago!  Come on Alty!

Altrincham FC First Team / AFC Wimbledon

It appears that in addition to being thrown out of the Trophy for playing an ineligible player (international clearance not received) that they may be docked the points they have earnt in the league whilst said player has turned out ("following the example set last season by Altrincham").  This could lead to a 19 point deduction.

Now if 18 points was wrong for us, then it's also wrong for AFC Wimbledon?

Altrincham FC First Team / Long drawn out cup ties
« on: January 10, 2007, 07:34:02 PM »
I know the Tamworth game has taken a long time to not get played, but does anyone remember:

APL Cup Quarter Final 1981-2 (I think)

1st leg: Alty 1 Northwich 0 November
2nd leg: Vics 1 Alty3 March 1st - I think the only time I've seen Alty win at the Drill Field - and our second goal was scored by Barry Howard, who (more or less) caught the ball on the half way line, ran with it in his hands for 10 yards or so, dropped it, rounded Dave Ryan and rifled it into the top corner.
So 5 months between first and second legs, and I remember the date of the second leg as it was the anniversary of our 'tiltle clinching' 3-2 win over Weymouth a couple of years before.

Only competition for me was a NWFL game at Hyde in 1977-8 which ended up being played the Monday after the Trophy final, and after I'd been to Ewen Fields three or four times (by train) to watch Hyde United training sessions as the game had been postponed whilst I was in transit.
