All of the above grounds plus Bishop Auckland's old ground, The McCain Stadium (Scarborough) and The Moorlands (Moor Green).
-
I think I may have been to as many obsolete grounds watching Alty as current ones. Here are 30 or so of them (off the top of my head):
Drill Field
Canal Street
Maine road
millmoor
Springfield park
SC**thorpe (Old show ground?)
Belle Vue
Great Harwood
Eton Park
Loakes Park (Wycombe)
Huish (yeovil)
Maidstone United
dartford
Leytonstone & Ilford
Witton Albion
christie park
Worksop town (Central Avenue)
Hinckley Athletic
Nuneaton borough (Manor Park)
Enfield (Southbury Park)
Wealdstone (Lower Mead)
Bishops Stortford
Forest Green
Holly Park (south Liverpool)
Bucks Head (or is New Bucks head the same place) - Telford United
Seamer road (Scarborough)
The recreation ground (weymouth)
The new rec (Greys Athletic)
Ellesmere Port Town
Wexham Park (slough)
-
Wexham Park (used to work at the golf complex just up the road from the old ground and the hospital)
Enfield
Drill Field
Maine Road
-
In addition to 12 of those listed by the Cult I have been on the following grounds in the 70's
Nantwich Town
Skelmersdale
Netherfield
I have also been on two Welsh grounds but neither was watching us
Somerton Park, Newport County
Nant-y-coed, Borough United
-
The Tower Ground (New Brighton), The Windmill (AP Leamington), Simonside Hall (South Shields), Barton Stadium (Winsford), plus many of the others above. One that nobody's mentioned (I'm sure Joe's been there, even though I haven't) was Simonswood Road, the old ground of Kirkby Town.
Watching non-Alty games, I've also been to Fellows Park (Walsall) and Valley Parade (Bradford City).
-
Feethams (Darlo's old ground)

Feethams (Darlo's old ground)
Been there, but to watch cricket ! Who's done Layer Road (Colchester) and lived to tell the tale ?
-
Layer Road, Colchester what a god forsaken sh*t hole that was. And some of the "home" fans were idiots....
-
Barton Stadium (Winsford),
......unless I'm very much mistaken Winsford United haven't moved from Barton Stadium
-
I never went to Kirby but went to Layer Road twice, horrible place and i still have a strong dislike of Colchester to this day!

I can't believe no one's said the old Wembley

I can't believe no one's said the old Wembley
I never went there. However, I've been to the new Wembley three times and it's an excellent stadium. The problem is getting home afterwards because the queue for Wembley Park underground station is horrendous.

Went to the old Wembley twice it was a dump once to see a concert in aid of those killed or injured in the Falklands in 1982 and also drove a mini-bus of Stockport fans to some final there in the 90<s
-
loved the old wembley something about the atmosphere and history. yes it was a dump but it was the getting there that was important. The fact that there was only 20,000 or less people there on the three alty visits was irrelevant the atmosphere was electric.
1978 Great wembley moments the other SW throwing up on a policewomens foot.
That off licence with that big dog after the match
1982 loads of people getting thrown out for not sitting down against enfield and then appearing in the Enfield side of the segregation fence and getting thrown out again and paying to get back in the Alty side, expensive but funny.
1986 Dont remember much about hte runcorn game the Cheshire mid booze and fat cigarette bus took care of those precious memories and my promissed marriage to my afianced at the time
But with a full house for england games the atmosphere was something else 100,000 nearly all supporting the same team.
watched Man u beat Brighton in a final replay and one of the funniest songs i've heard
stevie foster stevie foster what a difference you have made what a differnece you have made (old people will inderstand that

I remember that song.. He missed the original game through either suspension or injury and made f**k all difference when he played in the replay.
:D

i went to the old wembley a few times. League cup finals, england games, FA trophy finals etc. It was without doubt a dump. If you ever went round the back you found fly tipping, squalor and the smell was...well not nice.
I had a ticket for the upper terrace and walking up the stairs was foul, wading through an inch or two of wazz that was flowing down. England V East Germany in 1984 so a good size gate but not a full house.
It was more a national disgrace than a national stadium. Glad to see it demolished.

ROTHERHAM,witton, runcorn vics sC**thorpe, scarboro, muff, chesters old ground sealand rd.You missed that one,Maine Rd.is Elesmere ports ground still there?Went to most games with my father,he has watched Alty since he was 8,his last game was against Mansfield this season, and it will be his last ever.I have just got back to Devon from Manchester visiting him in Wythenshawe hospital, where he is expected to die this week.So another old long standing Alty fan will be gone.

All the best harold. Hope things are ok. Sad to hear news like that in the alty family.
And to this thread there are none that i am ashamed to have missed. Quite glad to have missed places like stevenage and stonebridge road tbh but there are no local ones really. Apart from possibly hyde. I'll have to find out on that one though.
-
its easy to say but MY thoughts are with you Harold
-
The best stadium anywhere in the world, The Den, now a Fairview Homes housing estate :'(
-
Fisher Athletic anyone?
-
JD and Sw and everyone else just to let you know Dad died this moening(wednesday). So someone who has support the club from 1932 is now gone.He always told me of him scoring 9 goals at Moss Lane while playing for the gas and him being a left winger, was telling me that story till about 2 months ago.

Sad to hear of your loss Harold.
Steve
-
I'm very sorry Harold, our thought are with you and your family.

Ray
-
Sorry to hear of your loss Harold.
I'm sure you have happy memories of your Dad and how nice to have shared a common love of Alty with him.
-
The title of this thread takes on a whole different meaning now. All the best Harold, you are in our thoughts.
-
Very sad news Harold, I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
-
Sad news. Sorry to hear that.
-
Sorry to hear of your loss. Take comfort from your memories.

As someone whose Dad also introduced him to a lifetime love affair with the Club, I empathise with you. My old man's been gone 17 years now, but I still to this day start the match off standing on the same part of the popular side where we stood all those years ago.

Phil.
My dad died in 2000 and I too stand in the popular side where he first took me in about 1960..(When I could just about see over the wooden barrier and I use to annoy everyone within a 20 yard radius with my Rattle ;) I was bought up on players like Tommy Banks, Paddy Fagan. Charlie Mitten, Big John Higgins etc and although I havent actually lived in Alty since 1969 when I took the Queens Shilling, I have watched numerous teams on a regular basis in towns and cities where I have lived all over the uk and some even in Europe and none of them have given me the same passion as I get when watching Alty, Hence the user name :D
Good, Bad or indifferent. One thing is for sure about being an Alty fan, Once bitten, it certainly courses through your blood for ever.

So true. Lovely sentiments.
-
Thanks to everyone for those sentiments. My sister told me she has found one of my fathers football medels from the 1940s and she will pass that onto me.Like Ray(we went to school together) i started watching Alty in the 60s(have mentioned once or twice) my first game was against Wrexham in the FA Cup,I also have watched teams eleswhere and they dont match Alty one bit. Some of us must be pushing over 80 years of our Familys supporting the club and still gonig. Its a nice tribute.
