HOLMES JOINS AS SAUNDERS LEAVES
Altrincham FC have signed former Burton Albion player Danny Holmes, following a series of successful pre-season games in which he has played both in midfield and defence. Born on 17 November 1986, 23 year-old Danny started out as a Port Vale trainee and then joined Burton Albion from where he was released when they reached the Football League in 2009. Altrincham were already on his trail before the midfielder joined Ilkeston Town for 2009-10.
Leaving Moss Lane is goalkeeper Russell Saunders, who has been released after six starts in two spells with the club. His first appearance was as a loan player in 2007 from Wigan Athletic, when he was carried off with a leg injury after an hour of his debut. He returned to Moss Lane as an Altrincham player for the 09-10 season. The Club wishes him well for the future and thanks him for his services.

We have a good squad now but only one goal keeper is a bit worrying.
-
Surely GH will have something up his sleeve re a 2nd keeper ?

Ian Senior is at hand.
He's a bit inexperienced but he could be an option.
-
oh yea ;D
-
I've not seen anything of him?
Anyone got any reports?
-
Another quality acquisition by all accounts - welcome.
Shame to see Saunders go - he would be 1st choice for many teams but has been unlucky to be in the same squad as Englands No1.
-
Welcome to Danny.
2nd choice keeper needed urgently! Good luck Russell.
-
Grahame Rowley could be No2 to Stu Cobern ;)
-
Wonder if Richard Acton can take time off from his car dealership - if it's still going? Seriously, maybe the mooted loan signing could be a keeper?
-
Either that, or maybe he considers one of the youth team lads worth a pot ;D (James Fossdyke will no doubt be getting very excited whether or not that's the case!!)
-
It only serves to highlight the fine balancing act we have between keeping the books straight and fielding a competitive side. This is the sort of compromise we have to come to in order to make things work at Alty.
I happen to agree with the above poster who suggested the possible loan signing might be a keeper.
-
I'd be very surprised if a club would loan a keeper out if he was going to sit on the bench most of the time to be honest.
-
I thought Acton was happy to be a sub when needed?
Thought Saunders would be worth keeping though, good prospect and back up.

Fine if that's the case, but what if Stu is out for a spell ? I don't see Acton filling that particular breach, so a loanee would be needed at short notice !
-
Maybe GH has an arrangement with GB at Wigan to get a junior if needed if Stu is out for a while.
You can't expect someone as good as Saunders to stay a No2 keeper for too long.
-
I doubt we'll start the season with one GK.
The reserve keeper situation at Alty is a difficult one. Stuart still has at least one or two very good seasons in him so is always likely to be be first choice.
Therefore as we have no reserve team, we have to find a keeper who wants to travel the country, warm up and play no games (unless Stu is injured). He could go a long time without playing a match.
I was never confident with Saunders in nets I am afraid..however I respect him for sticking with us and not playing.
My worry is that he was the best we were going to get given the circumstances above.

So we need Peter "Baywatch" Stanier! :D
Unless he's actually going to get a game, in which case we definitely do not need Peter Stanier!
-
Delighted he joined.
I think we are now complete with a reserve keeper to come.
-
Welcome to the club Danny, although I didn't see much of him. Sad to see Russell go, a really nice guy and I wish him all the best for his future career
-
Welcome Danny. He looked useful in midfield but didnt see him play in defence playing as centre half I assume, seems he did OK then. Sad to see Russell go, I agree with Mark but you cant deny his loyalty and it will be very hard to find a loyal deputy,....I wonder what G&K have in mind?..sure we will know soon ;)
-
I thought Holmes was really good as right centre back, will be interesting to see the line up for luton now.

Another quality acquisition by all accounts - welcome.
Take it you not seen much of pre season then?
-
Welcome on board, Danny. Good luck for the future, Russell.

No, but reports have been good.
