FA Trophy First Round

Telford United...2  Altrincham...2

*** Alty fight back from 2-0 down by means of two late goals from John Owens and Andy Windsor;

*** Telford's line-up that afternoon included former Robins Graham Carr (father of Channel Four comedian Alan) and goalkeeper Bobby Irvine, whose woeful display in a 4-2 home defeat in the FA Cup against Wigan Athletic in October 1966 had prompted his immediate release from the club by an irate Freddie Pye.

If anyone has any recollections at all about this particular match (or, indeed, the aforementioned two ex-Alty players), please either send me a private message via this Forum or email me at: towerofsong@btinternet.com

Altrincham FC First Team / Another blank Saturday?

Gloucester City have reached the FA Cup First Round on 9th November 2013 after defeating Hampton & Richmond Borough 3-1 this afternoon, so our scheduled league fixture with them on that date has bitten the dust.

Altrincham FC First Team / Boston United transfer list Ashley Timms

Who would ever have thought that our old friend the reliably cuckoo Ashley Timms would soon drive his manager to distraction?

Altrincham FC First Team / Brian Flynn's heckle of the season to date

In the fifth minute of additional time of the second half against Brackley last Saturday, the visitors gain a rather fortunate corner when the ball goes out of play off Shaun Densmore.

Brackley's egotistical goalkeeper Billy Turley duly starts to go up for the corner.

When Turley has advanced to the halfway line, our Radio Robins stalwart bellows from the Main Stand:

"Billy, don't be a hero!"

At which point, Turley uncannily retreats back to his own penalty area.

Marvellous work by the boy Flynn.

Altrincham FC First Team / Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours

A new sign bearing the legend: "Altrincham FC - The J Davidson Stadium" is reportedly being affixed to the outside back wall of the main stand.

Any chance that the old one could be raffled/auctioned off....?

Altrincham FC First Team / Bill Shankly & Gerry Berman
« on: September 18, 2013, 06:09:21 PM »

I managed to locate this old favourite via a Liverpool fans' message board:

The following text was posted by the person who had uploaded the above photograph:

"A large copy of the above photograph had been hung on the wall of the Boardroom at Altrincham FC for many years. It shows Bill Shankly, one of the greatest managers of Liverpool FC, and our ex-chairman a youthful Gerry Berman, the one with the long hair in the old stand at Burscough FC.

On 30 March 2002, Burscough played Alty at to Moss Lane and I will not mention the result, except to say they went away happy, including their Secretary Stan Strickland. Stan had seen the photo and asked if he could have a copy. Not having seen the photo, I said I would scan it and send him a print. However, the photo was too big for my equipment and it had to be done professionally. It was scanned, printed and sent to Stan.

I was interested in the story behind the picture and here it is. It is based on long term memories of several so if any of the visitors to the site can confirm or expand on the story I would be most grateful.

After leaving Liverpool, Bill Shankly, a long-time friend of Tony Sanders, then the manager of Altrincham, acted as advisor to the club. He and Gerry Berman went to a pre-season friendly at  Burscough in August 1979 to evaluate a possible signing for Alty. It is not clear who the player was or whether the player was signed. Also it was not clear whether Alty were Burscough opponents or what was the result.

The photo, the original of which is held by Gerry, was probably taken by a photographer from the Daily Mail and appeared in that paper in August 1979 with the caption "We know who you are Gerry Berman but who is that with you?"

Footnote: Alty did, indeed, play a pre-season friendly at Burscough on 11th August 1979.

The next time that you find yourself in a branch of Waterstone's, seek out a copy of David Peace's new book Red Or Dead, which chronicles Bill Shankly's career as the manager of Liverpool FC:

http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/david+peace/red+or+dead/9596934/

Head straight to pages 695 to 698, which comprise an account of Alty's FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on Saturday, 3rd January 1981, a day on which Bill Shankly travelled on the Alty team coach and also gave a pre-match talk to the Robins' players in the away dressing room prior to kick-off.
