Kettering v Fulham
« on: January 24, 2009, 10:17:53 PM »

Just watching the highlights of this match and the commentator mentioned that it's the first time a top-flight side had visited Rockingham Road in the FA Cup.

Which made me wonder - have we ever played a top-flight side at Moss Lane? Blackburn in the 70s possibly - were they top-flight then?

They were League Division Three.

I presume that Orient are the highest placed opposition that we have played against in a competitive fixture at Moss Lane?

They were members of the old Second Division when we faced them in the FA Cup Third Round back in January 1980.

Crewe 96 ? Can't remember if they were 1st/2nd or 3rd div, just the game was moved because of internationals, and being able to smell deep heat in the main stand...

Suppose Wigan were on the way up when we beat them in 1994.

Wigan were bottom of the football league (or very close) when we beat them in 1994. Crewe were in Division Two (now League 1) in 1995/96 but still had Neil Lennon in their team at the time and as he'd been called up for Northern Ireland they managed to get the game switched, thus depriving us of a lot of tv revenue (but what else is new?).

I think Orient are the only team that we have played in a 3rd round tie at Moss Lane, so no other team from above League one/old third division would have played us in a competitive match.

Blackburn were near the top of the old division 3 then we played them.

It was Orient, remember Ralph Coates in their team at Moss Lane,Crewe were a 3rd or 4th Division team at the time.Where were Sheffield United when we beat them 1-0.Do the Everton and Spurs matches count?

Our Third Round matches

1965 -6 Wolves away
1974-5 Everton away, and then at Old Trafford
1978-9 Spurs away and then at Maine Road
1979-80 Orient at Moss Lane and then away
1980-81 Liverpool away
1981-82 Burnley away
1985-86 Birmingham City away and then York away
1994-95 Spurs away

So in 9 ties in the third round or beyond, we've been drawn away 8 times!

And therefore the winners of the most senior team to play a competitive fixture at Moss Lane is Orient FC

The following 3rd Division teams have played at Moss Lane in the sixties:
1963-64 Wrexham (0-0), 1967-8 Barrow (1-2), 1968-69 Crewe Alex (0-1)

and in the seventies:
1972-3 Notts County (0-1), 1973-74 Blackburn Rovers (0-2)

none in the eighties! (although we won at Blackpool twice and at Rotherham)

and in the nineties:
1990-91 Huddersfield Town (0-1), 1992-3 Port Vale (1-4), 1995-96 Crewe Alex (0-2)

and this decade:
2007-08 Millwall (1-2)

The Crewe match in 1995 was postponed for international call ups for Neil Lennon, Rob Edwards and Robbie Savage.
