I’m not sure we ever release a formal ‘retained list’ in the way that most other clubs seem to, do we? I don’t remember us doing so.

I quite like that we don't. It's very cutthroat. Simon Richman, for example, deserved more than a name on a list.

We're "stuck" with them for this season unless we can persuade any we don't want to keep to leave. Paying them off might cost a few quid which we then won't have for replacements.

I know. I think he was at the end of the first year of a two year contract.
I seem to recall some on here puzzled that he was offered that length of a deal.

I think you are right. Quite a few players were offered 2 year contracts at the start of last season iirc
