Title: Stoke City Match thread
Post by: Alty Dave on July 26, 2022, 11:25:40 AM
Do we think we'll hear anything of todays match at 3pm? I assume some big decisions will follow this over the Trialist's? With open day etc on Thursday.

Stoke have requested that the club don’t broadcast radio. There will be team news and goal updates on Twitter along with a match report from Brian Flynn.

1-1 at half time.

Conn-Clarke scored for us. Superb goal from 22 yards apparently.

They equalised shortly after, deep cross to back post, headed back across goal and tapped home.

Very strong side for them apparently, close to their starting Championship XI for Saturday.

Scunny fans on twitter perplexed by the decision to release Tom Pugh. Obviously don't know how he did today but that's quite encouraging.

A Stoke City supporter has just told me that they are reportedly playing members of their first team against us.

Apparently, they have been "truly dreadful" in pre-season to date and so they were probably aiming for a confidence-boosting exercise ahead of their opening league fixture of the new season at Millwall on Saturday.

Sounds like we were well beaten in the end, once we started ringing in the changes.

Interested to hear how the triallist got on.

Ended 5-1 loss after we swapped almost the entire team through 2nd half for trialist and fringe players. Obviously need to wait on match report.

Is anyone else… worried?

Yep, poor pre season.

Small squad and lost two big players, Kossy and Marriott.

Still need a wide player and LB to cover/challenge.

Parky said one or two more to come a few weeks back when kosylo was still fit so I assume he is still looking. Not worried yet but disappointed after early signings showed such promise

The Cult called it recently. Given we've lost three of the four leading goalscorers from last season, where are the goals coming from?

The first four or five games of the season proper will be the real indicator. Pre-season is just training.

We go through the same thing on this forum every pre-season.

The players matched a strong Stoke side - some with Premier League experience - for at least half of today's game - given the goals came in a flurry, it's usually a sign of wholesale changes being made.

I'm not worried at this stage - I'd be more worried if pre season lulled us into a false sense of security and we didn't act on things that aren't right.

Don’t Panic. Let’s see how we go when the season starts. We are a lot better in midfield who I’m sure will create more chances for our strikers.

Yes, I heard the England team did the same against Aylesbury United once...

I guess we're keeping our powder dry and waiting to see which players the likes of Stockport release/send out on loan in the next week or so. Kosy and Marriott out in a very small squad is a bit of a nightmare.

I was buoyed by the fact we competed first half at Stoke, made changes and as expected we succumbed to the pressure.

The frontline have only just started playing together, so need time. Hopefully a couple more players may come in.

Saturday will be a good test as well.

I’m not sure how much of another ‘test’ we really need.

Our final 3 friendlies are essentially against loaded probable league one winners, a hiding to nothing against Stoke City’s first team and the usual chasing shadows against United’s kids in a 0-3 piss take in front of an average crowd.

I’m not sure how this benefits us heading into the new season tbh.

If I'm worried, then fans of our two Yorkshire rivals are probably sat on the bog overdosing Imodium 🤣
