Decent CB? Baines will be playing EFL football soon, and Jones got a move from North to League 2. He had Mullarky as well.

He needs to command that area. Not be glued to his line

Toby is in the past tense and therefore can have no bearing on our recent performances (0 points from a possible 12).

I agree with you that a keeper needs to be able to command his area but that is not his exclusivity and the outfielders recent defence of set pieces and crosses has been woefully poor.

I'm sorry but I don't see the same level of performance from James Jones that he displayed in the N.L.North where he was arguably the best CB in the League.

Lewis Baines... undoubtedly heading in an upwards trajectory as you say and I completely agree with you on this one.

Please give Ollie half a Dinanga of a chance.

Byrne once again showed what he is extremely good at (Shot stopping) and extremely poor at (moving off his line)

I massively disagree. Today was a big step forward for Byrne. For the first time that I’ve seen, he regularly came off his line and punched or caught crosses. He wasn’t perfect but for he was trying to be the keeper we need him to be.

One thing that came out of the interview I did with PP on Saturday is that he said we don't practise set pieces in a genuine, contested way for fear of people getting injured. We just give them a lot of info on what the opposition will look to do. I can't help thinking that needs to change because it's clearly not working. Our vulnerability at set pieces is getting ridiculous.

Desperately sad news. Kingy was quite simply one of the most iconic figures in the history of Altrincham FC. He was at the heart of pretty much all the success the club enjoyed from the late 70s until the mid 90s in the APL, the Fa Cup and Fa Trophy and as if that weren't enough was pivotal in saving the club from liquidation.

R.I.P. to the Greatest of them all.

Chesterfield put out a much weakened side in their sole Trophy game, a defeat by Coalville Town, and Gyasi wasn't in the squad - so he should be available.

Gyasi played in the Trophy when on loan at Gloucester.

Agree re. Welch-Hayes. He offers us something going forward and is a decent defender too. In fact, I felt the entire defence did really well and we're very nearly able to grab a point against a Wrexham team which flattered to deceive to be perfectly honest. Marriott and Lundstram did well too - particularly the former (who was everywhere). Osborne was a weird selection over the likes of Pringle, but hey ho.
The obvious fallback is up front. I love Jordan, don't get me wrong but he ain't scoring and that's a problem. Sinclair and Kaja (when he came on) tried hard but there aren't many goals there either. I'd like to see Linney and Gyasi start the next game, because I feel they will offer more.
We're only 8 points clear of Gateshead - that's the harsh reality with a bad run of fixtures to come.
Hopefully we'll find the right combination up top - then we'll definitely be okay. Fingers crossed.

Linney and Gyasi are the two players who can’t play in our next game.

I'd go:

Byrne;

MWH, JJ, Baines, EJ;

Lundstram, Marriott

Kaja, Cashman, Quitirna/Sinclair

Linney

- - -

Hulme/Dinanga, Quitirna/Sinclar, Pringle, Osborne, Oyedele

I reckon that's about right although I think Gyasi may start and will almost certainly be in the 16.

I forgot about Gyasi! Easily done at the moment I guess.

Very easily.

Given there is this rule whereby a team can only field five loan players max in any matchday squad, I wonder if that's a clue to the status of the three lads from Utd? ie the other five (Gyasi, Quitirna, Sinclair, Cashman and Welch-Hayes) will be the first choice loan players and the other three will fill in if we get injuries or when players are Trophy-tied.

I wonder if the same rule re loan players applies in the Trophy incidentally?

I wonder if the language we've used suggest theres a smart work around as in work experience doesnt count

I wondered that but the wording of the NL rule in question specifically includes youth loans and work experience:

"Rule 6.4.8:

A Club may name up to a maximum of five (5) players on a Team Sheet who are either Short Term Loan, Long Term, Youth Loan or Work Experience. Any Club in breach of this Rule which results in more than 5 of such players entering the field of play during the course of any one fixture will be deemed to have played an ineligible player(s) and will be dealt with in accordance with Rule 6.9."

The draw for the whole competition was made when the first round was announced. The Cheshire FA site shows the chart.
We are in the bottom half of the draw, as are Crewe, so we will play Crewe.

Not necessarily. If that was the case we would have played Alsager rather than the Stockport walkover in the last 16. I’d wait until it’s officially confirmed. Destiny suggests us vs you know who in the final though….baa

Quite. The Cheshire FA website makes it look like they've done the draw all the way to the final, World Cup-style, but I think in reality it works like a normal domestic cup competition and we are now awaiting the semi-final draw.

Dinanga is not the long term answer but he’s the best option we’ve currently got for that position and we should get behind him. The reaction some fans make to his slightest mistake is absurd and really poor form, I’ve got to say. I’ve never ever experienced the sort of stick he’s had with any other player in my time.

Very lazy to call him lazy, would love to see his running stats vs. Jennings who left with our good graces despite offering nothing but a decent first touch (which Dinanga has, by the way.) Say what you want about his finishing but he is absolutely not a lazy footballer and I’ll back that all day. Amazed people think our management would accept that.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of players, to rate them or think they're useless, but I find the depth of the hatred for Dinanga from some quarters slightly disturbing.

If Mullarkey goes I'm hoping we can go after Digie with the transfer fee

Ferguson or Billy sass Davies

Now that Lewis Baines is a bit more established, I reckon Jake Cooper has the potential to step into the right hand berth from next season onwards.

He needs a loan in this division though.

Does anyone know what's going on with Cooper? Is he injured? He's barely featured in a matchday squad for a while now and we had a youth defender on the bench for the Wrexham Trophy game, which made me think he must either be injured or severely out of favour.

Think he will start with same 11 as Tuesday barring any injuries.

forecasting heavy frost on Friday night, so hope they have frost covers.

safe travels for all going to the game

They have very good frost covers - I remember seeing them when we played there a couple of seasons ago. It was pretty snowy in the South West that day but their pitch played very well, so hope that will be true on Saturday too.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Boreham Wood home match on Jan 28th
« on: January 18, 2023, 05:37:48 PM »

Boreham Wood's cup replay at Accrington tonight has been called off and it's not obvious when it'll be rearranged for - both teams have scheduled fixtures on Saturday and midweek next week. So I fear it may be played on R4 day, which is Saturday 28th when we're due to be at home to BW. Accrington don't have a game that day currently.

Now rescheduled for Tuesday, 24th January:

Good news, although obviously if BW win that game, our game with them on the 28th will be postponed.

It would be great to get beyond last season's total of 55. That would make it six consecutive seasons of improvement.

Agreed. That total of course came from 44 games so we'll need to get to 58 for it be an improvement on last season.
