Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Verdict
« on: June 12, 2020, 11:50:26 AM »
It seems I’m in the minority, but I’m genuinely surprised that anyone thought the playoffs were ever actually going to take place at our level?

At least we (finally) have clarity now, can start looking towards next season, and not fall any further behind those sides who have already started their 2020/21 planning.
We still need a bit of strengthening, but we’ve looked a much better side post-Johnston, and so with a decent start next season there’s no reason we can’t look forward to having a proper run at it next time out.

Completely agree Matt, it did seem extremely unlikely playoffs would happen. How do you know we have fallen behind planning for next season,.. just asking like ?

Apparently all NLN playoff clubs voted yes and were told to go away and think about it !

I understand that the EFL have paid to test all Championship and L1 players and staff and FOUR L2 teams (presumably the playoff teams) but have the actual costs been revealed ?

So presumably NL would have to pay for each playoff team and staff to be tested before they could return to training.
Thats 18 teams,.. where would that money come from ?

Allegedly, the National League are having a similar meeting tomorrow to discuss this!

I have heard figures of £3m for EFL to test the clubs staff ? How on earth would NL clubs be able to afford even a fraction of that ?

Does this make it more likely of a play off in the North?

Probably but who/how is testing going to be done/paid for anytime soon ?

That really would not be fair. Its one thing having playoffs, but another to change the rules about who competes in them at this late stage.
If we were 6th you wouldnt be happy would you !

Ultimately people will continue to contract and die from covid 19 every day for years to come, even after if a vaccine is found.

So ultimately, if you want sport to happen, then there is going to be a point where we say x amounts of deaths are ‘acceptable’, in the same way that reopening other sectors will happen.

The Premier League has big enough stadia, facilities and resources as well as a relatively limited number of people needed to be able to try and restart in whatever guise. With the economy as it is, I think doing it for the money is a decent enough reason as well.

But for us? At this level? With part time players? No chance.

Play offs with players who have been in a working environment during the day and playing football at night can’t be safe. You could be tested negative in the morning and have it by the evening? Way to many variables

The most realistic assessment I have heard for a while.
As much as I would like playoffs, I cant see them happening.
Just restart from scratch WHEN SAFE to do so,.. which might be autumn.

Anything that stops Liverpool winning the football league is ok with me to be honest. We’ll just send Brian and the lads in wearing gas masks and pith helmets and we can listen on radio robins from our cellars

Another top class performance, this time against a decent side. Apart from a brief spell after HT we pretty much controlled the game.
Tope 3 is becoming distinctly possible now.

We share your frustration but sometimes you just have to accept that everyone is doing their best but the weather wins.
Even Curzon is off and they have a great piitch. Too much rain came down last night.
I thought the main purpose of the covers was to protect from frost, not sure they even cover the whole pitch either ?

Its not just surface water, the ground is completely sodden, its rained almost every day for at least a week often heavy, streams/rivers are full.
You cant put covers on soaked ground, during gales, and hope to achieve anything.
Then to cap it off it rained quite consistently all night, I cant even walk on my lawn in Alty its got puddles all over it.

We dont have a climate,.. we just have weather  ::)

Maybe another one for the future ?

The penalty decision was an odd one, Tom won the first tackle OK and also got the ball in the second tackle albiet horizontal, but it wasnt even the guy he beat in the second tackle but the first one who fell over his leg well after he made the tackle.
Moral in the story is,.. stay on your feet so refs dont have to make a decision.

I wouldn't be looking forward to a trip to Brackley but I'm hoping for third.
We have played them away already, just the home game left. We do have quite a few key games against the top teams soon.

Brackley seem to be faltering,.. Boston and Gateshead both look strong to me and may pose biggest threat.
Kings Lynn and York seem likely to be top 3, but I suspect Chester will drop a few places.
3rd for us would be a great finish considering where we were.
