Sheffield United: Higginbotham plots a way forward

BUT for the persuasive powers of Sir Alex Ferguson, Danny Higginbotham could have been preparing to confront former team mate Paul Scholes tomorrow afternoon, writes James Shield.
Scholes, who spent three years working with the Sheffield United defender at Old Trafford, planned to finish his career with hometown club Oldham Athletic before the wily old Scot convinced him to remain a red instead.
Higginbotham harbours a similar ambition. The subject of his affections, however, resides 20 miles away along the A560.
“I’m from Altrincham and, when I’m too old to be playing professionally, I want to see out my career with them,” Higginbotham told The Star earlier this week. “I used to go and watch them with my mates and I’ve got a framed shirt on my wall at home. Lots of autographs too.
“Players like Nick Daws, Jeff Wealands, Ken McKenna and Paul Showler were legends. We used to idolise them from the terraces. Altrincham might not be the most glamorous side in the world but they were the team I grew up supporting so pull on their shirt at some stage would be great.”

Fantastic.
He's too old now to play pro I'm afraid, so I expect to see him signing for Alty this afternoon :)
Dream on, think it will be 18 months yet at least

Whaaaaaaat? In order to have you and a few others chastising him week in week out! Christ, let the man semi retire in peace first before we ruin him ;D

that is a fantastic bit of reading. looking forward to it already...

He always promised it, good to hear

Thought Wayne had made it up when I saw it on his Facebook, always heard that he would do that ( as Jamie said ) but thought it might just be wishful thinking to get another Colin Little scenario at Alty.
Used to play football with Danny on Stamford Park when we were kids, to say he was 50 times better than most of us wouldn't be an exaggeration. Knew he was going to be a top player then.
To see him referencing some of my heroes is quality.
Top stuff Danny..look forward to seeing you in the red and white.

Sinnott would probably only play him on the odd occassion in case he knackered the poor bugger out ;) :D
He could sit and discuss the economic climate with Duncan in the fkn dugout. :D ;)
On a serious note it would be great to see you at Moss Lane again Danny - this time as a player.
Some good players came out of Urban Drive over the years....

Fantastic stuff, I can't wait to see him in an Alty shirt one day. To hear someone who's played at the top level of English football talking about playing for Alty like he does is brilliant.

I can just imagine the best young footballer in the area saying something similar in 20 years time
“Players like Marc Joseph, Craig Dootson, Michael Twiss and Wes Baynes were legends. We used to idolise them from the terraces. Altrincham might not be the most glamorous side in the world but they were the team I grew up supporting so pull on their shirt at some stage would be great.”

Top man Danny, looking forward to the day we see you in an Alty shirt. See if you can persuade some of your fellow pros to join you.
